There was a young man named Bill in England. Before leaving school, he began to look for a job as a clerk. Few companies needed new clerks due to the financial crisis(金融危机)at that time. It became harder and harder to find a job. Luckily, a chance camp up to him. A company wanted to employ one person. He and the other twenty people joined in the first interview. After that, three persons were allowed to enter the final test which would decide one person to be employed in the end. Bill was lucky to be among them.
On the day of the second interview, Bill and the others arrived at the company on time. To their surprise, the interview was very easy. The interviewer only had a free talk with them, and then asked them to go back home waiting for the result. The next morning, Bill received a letter from the company which said he wasn't accepted. Certainly, he felt disappointed. On the evening of that day, Bill surprisingly received another letter, which said he was employed. But why was he accepted? As a matter of fact, the first letter sent to Bill was also part of the test. Every one of them got a letter which had the same meaning that morning. Only Bill replied with “Thank you” while the others said nothing.
Life isn’t all fun. There is always something making us unhappy. When you feel disappointed, please say “Thank you” to the person who disappoints you. That shows your great generosity(宽容) and politeness to others. If you do so, you’ll have more chances than others.

25、Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you. Well, ni-hao. (Laughter) It is such a pleasure and an honor to be here with all of you at this great university, so thank you so much for having me. I’m here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the world.
That’s why when my husband and I travel abroad, we don’t just visit palaces and parliaments (国会) and meet with heads of countries. We also come to schools like this one to meet with students like you, because we believe that relationships between countries aren’t just about relationships between governments or leaders — they’re about relationships between people, particularly young people. So we view study abroad programs not just as an educational chance for students, but also as an active part of America’s foreign policy (政策).
Through the wonders of modern technology (科技), our world is more connected than ever before. Ideas can cross different countries with the click of a mouse. Companies can do business and compete with companies across the world. And we can text, email, skype with people in the world.
So studying abroad isn’t just a fun way to spend a time of learning; it is quickly becoming the key to success in our times. Because getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores in school, which are important. It’s also about having real experience with the world beyond (超出) your borders—experience with languages, cultures and societies very different from your own. Or, as the Chinese saying goes: “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.”

26、 Don't tell anyone: is likely a phrase you have heard before of after someone tells you a secret. But why is it so hard not to spill the beans? One Baylor College of Medicine expert explains why this is a challenge.
“Secrets often include something that someone does not take pride in. They've chosen someone to tell the secret, but don't want other people to know about it because they feel like if it gets out it could damage (破坏) their fame,” said Dr. Asim, Shah, professor in the Meninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor. “However, it can be hard for the person to keep that to themselves because it may become a burden(负担).”
As soon as you tell somebody not to repeat your secret, people want to share it with somebody, Shah explained. Also most people have a confidant (知已), so when you share information with yours, keep in mind that they likely will share it with their own confidants.
With secrets so often getting out, why do people share them in the first place? One reason is that people often feel like it will help them keep close friendship with others, Shah said. However, connecting telling someone your secrets with how close you are to them is not always advisable. It is important for people to understand that they can have close relationships without sharing their secrets unnecessarily.
Another reason why people often tell a secret is that they feel guilty for keeping it, Shah said. For example, if your friend tells you a secret but you do not share it with your close friends, you may feel guilty for not telling them. If you do not share certain things with your close family members, a sense of distrust can develop. Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone.
He added that people who are more talkative may by accident let a secret out but that does not necessarily mean it is a good idea to share secrets with someone who is quieter. If somebody is quiet and keeps everything in, it may cause them to have more stress, and finally they will talk to somebody.
If you do not want to be responsible(负责的) for keeping someone's secret, it is best to be honest and tell the the person you do not want to know his or her secret.
“If you end up accidentally sharing a secret with somebody else, it is best to be honest and let the person know that you shared his or her secret," Shah said.

27、People often say that an Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than in flats, and many people own their homes. They can paint and change them in any way they like. In a crowded city everyone knows that he or she has private space that is only for himself or herself and for invited friends.
People usually like to mark their space. Are you sitting on a beach or a train or in a library? If you are on the beach you may have spread your sands around you; on the train you may have put your coat or a small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may have one corner or chair which is your own.
Once I was traveling on a train to London. I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man sitting opposite me had his bag on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was made rather angry. Maybe he thought that he owned the whole table! I took some newspapers out of my bag and put them on his.
