  • 25、Smartphones, poor sight

Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier . But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?

According to a study, half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average (平均) of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness(近视)since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.

Staring(盯)at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼)a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils(瞳孔)become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).

While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smart phone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

  • 26、   After my husband died from a heart attack, my world changed all in a sudden. I just put all my effort into making a living, caring for the children and just keeping my head above water.

I was lucky to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone, and in fact I was uncomfortable. Every unusual noise and any late-night phone call would fill me with fear. I felt unbelievably alone.

One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big beautiful German shepherd (牧羊犬) on our doorstep. I became worried. Where did this dog come from? Was it safe to let the children play with a strange dog? Finally I let him sleep in the basement(地下室)until the next day, when we could search around the neighborhood for his owner. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.

The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results. Saturday night he was still with us and I planned to take the children on a picnic without German. But we were surprised to see him jumping onto the hood (引擎盖)and looking directly into my eyes. No way was he going to be left behind. So he stayed again Sunday night. Monday morning I let him out for a run while the children got ready for school. He didn’t come back till the next Friday evening. And again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.

This repeated every weekend for almost 10 months. Each week, between German’s visits, I grew a little stronger and braver; every weekend I enjoyed his company(陪伴). Then one Monday morning we patted his head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time. He never came back.

I think of him often. He came when I needed him the most and stayed until I was strong enough to go on alone. I believe German was sent because he was needed, and because no matter how sad and alone we feel, somehow, somewhere, someone knows and cares.

1The underlined part in Paragraph 1 means the writer_____________.

A.had great difficulty supporting the family B.couldn’t breathe and swim at the same time

C.found it hard to look for a good housekeeper D.was too heart-broken to take care of her children

2What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?

A.At last the writer came to realize who German’s owner was.

B.Being strong enough, the writer didn’t miss German any more.

C.German had no choice but to come to the writer’s house on weekends.

D.The writer believes that German was sent to her because she was alone.

3Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.A Homeless Dog B.We Are Not Alone

C.Every Dog Has Its Day D.German, Our Pet Dog

  • 27、This is a tale of two friends ---one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!

Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi’s direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area. )

Though hard-working, the men don’t make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter.”

Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need --- a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!

【1】 Why did Haixia and Wenqi start working together?

    A. Haixia needed someone to help him.

    B. They both needed a way to make money.

    C. They wanted to improve the environment.

    D. They were required to do so by local offcials.

【2】Haixia and Wenqi’s forest has helped the village by ________.

    A. stopping floods in the rainy season

    B. increasing the number of tourists

    C. making the villagers richer

    D. providing more farmland

【3】Why do Haixia and Wenqi plant tree branches?

    A. They are easy to get.

    B. They do not cost money.

    C. They can grow very quickly.

    D. They are preferred by animals.

【4】In paragraph 5, when Wenqi says “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter”, he means that “________”.

    A. they hope to make the forest even better

    B. the fruits from their trees are very sweet

    C. they are proud not to depend on others

    D. they are able to do any difficult work

【5】 What can we learn from this story?

    A. Never give up and you will succeed.

    B. We should help the disabled to work.

    C. Try your best when facing difficulties.

    D. We can achieve more with teamwork.
