25、Lewis is a wild elephant. He lives in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve. Lewis spends his days as any elephant would. He eats, roams, and hangs out with his family. By doing what comes naturally, Lewis could help save his whole species.
Elephants are endangered. In many places their numbers are very low. To protect them, there are nature reserves in Africa and Asia. They give the animals a safe place to live.
However, elephants are large and eat a lot. They eat about 220 to 440 pounds of plants every day. It is hard to find spaces that are big enough to hold them.
Samburu is only 64 square miles. The elephants have to share that space with lions, zebras, leopards, and other animals. Sometimes the elephants roam into areas that aren’t safe.
Saving elephants “requires understanding how much space they need and why they need it,” says Thure Cerling. He and the Save the Elephants Foundation studied Lewis and other elephants on the Samburu Reserve.
When elephants wander outside the reserve, they’re often in danger. Cerling wanted to find out what makes them wander. Maybe then he could stop them.
Save the Elephants put radio collars around the necks of some elephants. Each collar had a GPS device in it. GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS uses satellites to find the location of an object. With GPS, scientists could follow the movements of the elephants.
Researchers also wanted to find out what the elephants were eating. They took hair samples from the tails of 35 elephants. Chemicals in the hair told the scientist what each elephant ate over time.
Scientists learned that Lewis often went outside the reserve during the dry season. He couldn’t find enough plants to eat at home. So he found tasty crops at a farm.
Lewis would be safer if he didn’t leave the reserve. The new information will help scientists protect him. They can give Lewis the food he needs during the dry season. Then Lewis and the other elephants won’t have to roam.
【1】What is Lewis’ daily life?
A.He spends days eating and wandering with his family.
B.He tries his best to find enough food for his family.
C.He tries his best to save the whole world.
【2】Why did Save the Elephants put radio collars around the necks of some elephants?
A.To make them look more beautiful.
B.To help scientists discover their movements.
C.To try out the GPS device outside the reserve.
【3】How did researchers find out what the elephant eat in the wild?
A.By inquiring the workers on the farm.
B.By watching the elephants using GPS device.
C.By testing the chemicals in the elephants’ hair samples.
【4】Why did Lewis often leave the reserve during the dry season?
A.He didn’t like the life on the Samburu Reserve.

26、 Millions of people visit Machu Picchu each year. It is an ancient Inca city in the mountains of Peru. Steep(陡峭的) steps and rough paths make the trip a challenge. It used to be nearly impossible for people with a physical disability.
Wheel the World has changed that. The company offers wheel-chair- accessible(可以使用轮椅的) tours of Machu Picchu and other places around the world. “Normally people with disabilities would think that these kinds of places are not possible for them,” Camilo Navarro told reporters. He set up Wheel the World with his best friend, Alvaro Silberstein. Silberstein uses a wheel chair.
Navarro and Silberstein started Wheel the World after hiking Torres del Paine in 2016. It is a national park in Chile. Silberstein was the first person to travel the park in a wheelchair. “Our story went popular,” he says. “We started receiving hundreds of requests from people wanting to repeat this trip.”
Today, Wheel the World runs 40 wheelchair-accessible trips in 55 countries. The company offers cars and hotels with ramps(轮椅). It directs people to accessible(可进入的) bathrooms. It even teaches local guides to help wheelchair users get around.
Wheel the World uses a special wheelchair for the Machu Picchu trip. It can be pushed like a wheelbarrow(独轮车). It also folds up(折叠) and can be put into a car easily. “It's a super strong wheelchair. It allows you to get to every corner in all kinds of places,” Navarro says. “Wherever somebody with a disability want to go, we can get there with that wheelchair.”

Phone
| The first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. It made communications easier. But the telephones were only fixed in post offices. People had to go there to make calls to faraway people and the fees were very high. Later, a cellphone was developed in 1973 in America. It was one of the most useful inventions. People can use cellphones to communicate with others much more easily. They can take them anywhere to make private calls, even vision calls (可视电话). Cellphones have many other functions, such as sending messages, taking photos and reading online.

TV
| The first TV set was invented by an English scientist, John Baird, in 1926. The invention helped people watch films at home instead of going to the cinema as before. At first, TV sets only broadcast black - white pictures. Several years later, colored TV sets made the pictures lively. However, they were heavy and thick, so it was difficult to move them. Then, digital TV sets came into being. They are light and thin. Many TV programs are available (可获得的) at any time. At present, people can use the IPTV( 网络电视) to record and replay programs.

Computer
| The first modern computer was invented in America in 1946. It was as big as a room. It improved the speed and exactitude of calculation (计算). In the 1950s, desktop computers were invented in the same country. They became smaller and could be put on the desk. Since then, they have become very important in many fields of work and leisure. Before the 1970s, the computers were single. It was the Internet that joined the computers into a big family, so they could share information with one another. Around 1985, laptops were developedin Japan. They were much smaller and could be put on people's laps. They were light and easy to take.

29、 One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “ You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “ No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made_____understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said , “ Yes , indeed, you speak very well.” ____the girl still kept saying , “ No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know_____to say.
What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t______a compliment ( 恭维)in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”.
