  • 23、I was born and raised in Hawaii, where I learned to enjoy and respect the difference of cultures as a member of its very successful Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Most of my classmates stayed in Hawaii for a college or went to schools on the West Coast, but I decided to broaden my horizons by attending Purdue University in Indiana. When I was there, I discovered I was a minority (少数派)—something I had never experienced back home.

Being a minority for the first time, I felt I was a person who knew nothing about what they often talked about. My ideas, interests and values were often thought to be not important. After sharing a different point of view, I would often hear: “What do you know? You’re from Hawaii.” These answers finally stopped me from telling where I was from.

That summer I went home to work for a political organization in Honolulu, where I discovered a love for working on laws. Slowly, my pride in my culture came back.

I returned to Purdue with a newfound love for my background. I decided to try my best to share my culture with everyone I could and, after I did, I found people were more willing to hear my ideas. I changed my major (专业) to political science and decided I wanted to be a civil servant (公务员).

I’m still young and have much to learn, but I will always remain proud of my culture. It has helped me form who I am today and helped me have. a better understanding of the world. I’ve also learned to be more patient and more open. I will make sure to provide a safe space for people to express their ideas and backgrounds without fear of being left out.

    2

People have different ideas about whether (是否) students should use mobile phones at school or not. 3  If their parents have something important to tell them, they can call their teachers for help. If someone’s mobile phone rings during a Chinese class, he and his classmates can’t concentrate on (集中注意) what the teacher is saying.
