24、More and more people think it necessary to study in an English-speaking country and it didn’t take long at all for me to decide to come and study in UK.
I have been used to school life since I came here two months ago, and I am starting to enjoy most of my time in here. School starts at 9 o’clock every morning, and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have long days, in which we have 9 lessons and school finishes at 4 o’clock. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday we have short days, in which we have only 6 lessons and finish at 1 o’clock. After lessons, we have 2 hours of activity time, when you can choose from a number of activities, including many sports, such as rugby(英式橄榄球) , football, basketball and tennis.
As a boarder(寄宿者), the quality of food is something I consider very important, and Merchiston has not let me down. The school kitchens are run by a professional company, and the quality of food is excellent, and they are always trying to make the diet healthy. One of the obvious advantages of being a boarder is that we can have breakfast in the school, which means we don’t have to pull ourselves out of bed as early as the day pupils!

A. 15 B. 45 C. 27 D. 18

25、Life is a journey to experience, to learn and to enjoy. I had something inside of me that was good and that would change the world for the better.
It was a hot summer day and I had just pulled into the gas station to fill up my car. After filling it up, I started to walk inside to pay. That is when I noticed them. Two elderly women were standing back from their car. There was shock and fear on their faces. I looked and saw what they saw: five yellow jackets (小黄蜂) building a nest around their gas cap. I suddenly felt scared. I shared the ladies’ fear.
Yellow jackets have never been friends of mine. Several times these wasps (黄蜂) had stung (叮) me while I was catting the grass. The worst time, however, was when I was a young boy. A friend of mine and I were playing in my backyard. I must have stepped on one of their nests again because before I knew it, both of us were being chased (追赶) and stung by the yellow jackets while we ran away crying. I ran to my mom with tears in my eyes. Seeing that I was shaking with fear, she ran a cold bath and put us both in it to ease the pain before giving us medicine to help us feel better.
My special experience inspired me to make a difference. I knew I couldn’t let fear stop me now. I reached into my pocket for a paper towel I had there, tore (扯) out the nest and stepped on it while the wasps flew around me. Both of the ladies thanked me for what I did.
It’s important to figure out what is right. You can’t let the fear of being stung either physically or emotionally keep you from doing what is right. My hope is that we are all brave so that we can live the best life. We need to love each other and change the world for the better. And the only way you can do this is through helpful acts and kindness. Don’t let the yellow jackets in your life hold you back.

26、On the morning of Nov. 24, China made history by starting the world’s first lunar return mission (月球返回任务) of the past 44 years. On that day, a Long March 5 rocket was sent into space by carrying the Chang’e 5. The mission lasted for 23 days and it is special for several reasons.
A return mission
Chang’e 5 marked China’s first take off from the moon to carry samples (标本) back. This success shows China has mastered the technology for travelling between the Earth and the Moon, which also will help with China’s future space research. The last lunar sample return mission was Luna 24 of the former Soviet Union (苏联) in 1976.
Larger samples
Chan’e 5 collected 1,731g of lunar samples, while the former Soviet Union sent back only 330g. “These samples will be a treasure.” said a US Professor Jolliff, “My hat is off to Chinese scientists for completing a very difficult mission.”
A new landing site
Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site is known as the Ocean of Storms. It’s on the near side of the moon. No probes (探测器) have visited that place before. The samples collected here provide the youngest ones ever tested: just 1.2 billion years old. Samples from the U.S. and the former Soviet Union landing sites are more than 3 billion years old, scientists say.
【1】What did Chang’e 5 do on the Moon?
A.Collected samples from the moon.
B.Searched for treasures on the moon.
C.Found out if there were storms on the moon.
D.Brought Luna 24 of former Soviet Union back.

D.other countries landed their probes before

27、Human activity is bringing big trouble to Mount Qomolangma. Both microplastics (微塑料) and climate (气候) change have a bad effect (影响) on the mountain, scientists say.
The highest mountain in the world is facing the problem of microplastics. A recent study found that the mountain is full of these plastics, which are usually less than 5 millimeters in size. They can be found in many things, including the clothing, tents and ropes that are left behind by climbers.
Microplastics take thousands of years to break down (分解) on their own. They are already known for posing a danger to sea animals. Now people are worried about Qomolangma, as the mountain already suffers (遭受) from serious pollution.
Global warming is also affecting the mountain, as well as its climbers. Another study points out that the glaciers (冰川) around Qomolangma have thinned by nearly 100 meters since the 1960s. As the ice melts (融化), cracks (裂缝) in the ice are becoming deeper and more dangerous, bringing danger to those who try to climb the mountain, according to Global News.
Landslides (滑坡) are also becoming more probable. There are many parts of the mountain that are held together by just frozen rocks or permafrost (永久冻土), according to Professor Joseph Shea at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada. When this permafrost melts, the risk of dangerous landslides goes up.
【1】Why is Mount Qomolangma full of microplastics?
A.Because of climate change.
B.Because microplastics are tiny.

D.Because the mountain ice melts.
