二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Why is the human brain so mighty? It has billions of nerve cells to carry out its commands. Without the brain, you would not be able to think, feel, move, remember, or do all the things that make you the special person you are.

At birth, the brains of infants (婴儿) weigh the same. But by adulthood, that changes. The average male brain weighs about 11 to 12 percent more than woman’s brain. But brain weight and size have nothing to do with intelligence. What matters is what’s inside the brain.

Despite its small size (about 3 pounds), the brain is able to receive and send an unlimited number of messages. It does this with the help of the spinal cord, the sense organs, and the automatic nervous system. The brain carries out this task by assigning jobs.

It puts the cerebellum in charge of balance and coordination.

The brainstem regulates heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure.

And the largest parts of the brain, the cerebral cortex and the cerebrum, control thoughts, feelings, and actions.

The cerebrum is divided into two halves. Each controls the muscles on the opposite side of the body. So, if you usually eat with your right hand and kick with your right foot, then your brain’s left half is said to “dominate”, and you’re right-handed. When the opposite is true, your brain’s’ right half takes the lead and you’re left-handed.

People use both halves of the brain, but the left half is especially good at helping you with words and numbers and helping you read and speak. The right side is better at creative tasks, such as music and art. And your sense of humor develops there.

Each half has four sets of lobes (脑叶). The frontal lobes behind your forehead do lot of the thinking and planning. The parietal lobes toward the back of your head sense pain. And the occipital lobes at the base of the brain allow you to see. The temporal lobes behind your ears store memories of music, taste, vision, and touch.

1What is the writing purpose of starting the text with a question?

A.To stress the importance of the brain.

B.To explain reasons for the power of the brain.

C.To leads readers into the main topic.

D.To share with readers the author’s problem.

2Which of the following parts is in charge of regulating breathing?

    A.The cerebral cortex. B.The cerebrum. C.The cerebellum. D.The brainstem.

3Based on the text, what would people with dominant right half brains likely do?

    A.Draw with the right hand.

    B.Write with the left hand.

    C.Eat with the right hand.

D.Kick a soccer ball with the right foot.

4What does the text mainly talk about?

A.The brain is a small organ that does a lot for the human body.

B.An intelligent person has a bigger brain size than other people.

C.The brain has two halves that control which hand you write with.

D.The lobes in the brain play an important role and do different tasks.

  • 22、Life as a 340-pound man had become unmanageable for Erie O’Grey. When not traveling for work, he rarely left his apartment. He took about 15 medicines, including weight-loss drugs. He tried dieting, but nothing worked. Then two things during a flight inspired him to go to see a naturopathic (自然疗法的) doctor. O’Grey had an embarrassing incident when the flight crew had to wait for a seat belt extension for him before the plane took off. Then he saw news about “plant-based” diets.

The doctor recommended a plant-based diet and also ordered him to adopt a shelter dog and walk him twice a day for 30 minutes. Armed with new recipes and the order, he went to the local shelter with visions of the perfect dog dancing through his head, one that never barked or disobeyed orders. But the adoption coordinator (协调人) brought in a very fat dog with skin problems.

“The dog looked at me with a clear sense of disappointment. Then his head hung low,” O’Grey said.” I can relate to that." The coordinator told him they had much in common and that they both need work on the same things. O’Grey took the dog home and named him “Peety”. They began going for walks. At first, O’Grey could only take his new companion about 100 yards. But Peety seemed to like it. “He just looked up at me like he was so appreciative.”

Their twice-daily exercise gradually got longer as O’Grey began to enjoy walking through his neighborhood with Peety. As they lost weight and grew healthier together, the pair developed a tight bond. In six months, Grey quit all medicines. Over time O’Grey discovered he loved long-distance running. Now he runs an average of five to six marathons a year.

On the journey toward a healthier, happier life, O’Grey becomes a lover of long-distance running and dog adoption. He’s also co-written a book, Walking with Peety: The Dog Who Saved My Life, encouraging others struggling with obesity to turn it around.

【1】Why did O’Grey feel embarrassed during the air travel?

A.He was too fat to take a seat.

    B.He rarely traveled by plane.

C.He was laughed at by the flight crew.

D.He couldn’t fit in the safety belt.

【2】What kind of dog did O’Grey want to adopt initially?

    A.A healthy dog.

    B.An adaptive dog.

    C.A gentle dog.

    D.An energetic dog.

【3】What can be learnt about Peety?

    A.He disliked running at first.

    B.He finished marathons with O’Grey.

C.He was trained to help people.

D.He was upset when meeting O’Grey.

【4】Which can be the best title for the text?

A.The tough journey of losing weight

B.A man completed his book inspired by his dog

C.The bond between a man and a dog

D.A dog changed its owner from medicines to marathon

  • 23、A scientist working at her lab bench and a six-old baby playing with his food might seem to have little in common. After all, the scientist is engaged in serious research to uncover the very nature of the physical world, and the baby is, well, just playing … right? Perhaps, but some developmental psychologists (心理学家) have argued that this “play” is more like a scientific investigation than one might think.

Take a closer look at the baby playing at the table. Each time the bowl of rice is pushed over the table edge, it falls in the ground — and, in the process, it brings out important evidence about how physical objects interact (相互作用); bowls of rice do not float in mid-air, but require support to remain stable. It is likely that babies are not born knowing the basic fact of the universe; nor are they ever clearly taught it. Instead, babies may form an understanding of object support through repeated experiments and then build on this knowledge to learn even more about how objects interact. Though their ranges and tools differ, the baby’s investigation and the scientist’s experiment appear to share the same aim (to learn about the natural world), overall approach (gathering direct evidence from the world), and logic (are my observations what I expected?).

Some psychologists suggest that young children learn about more than just the physical world in this way — that they investigate human psychology and the rules of language using similar means. For example, it may only be through repeated experiments, evidence gathering, and finally overturning a theory, that a baby will come to accept the idea that other people can have different views and desires from what he or she has, for example, unlike the child, Mommy actually doesn’t like Dove chocolate.

Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and scientists. Why do young children and scientists seem to be so much alike? Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort — the desire to explore, explain, and understand our world — is simply something that comes from our babyhood. Perhaps evolution (进化) provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as children. The same cognitive (认知的) systems that make young children feel good about figuring something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it, “It is not that children are little scientists but that scientists are big children.”

【1】According to some developmental psychologists, ________.

A.a baby’s play is nothing more than a game

B.scientific research into babies’ games is possible

C.the nature of babies’ play has been thoroughly investigated

D.a baby’s play is somehow similar to a scientist’s experiment

    【2】We learn from Paragraph 2 that ________

A.scientists and babies seem to observe the world differently

B.scientists and babies often interact with each other

C.babies are born with the knowledge of object support

D.babies seem to collect evidence just as scientists do

【3】Children may learn the rules of language by ________.

    A.exploring the physical world

    B.investigating human psychology

    C.repeating their own experiments

    D.observing their parents’ behaviors

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.The world may be more clearly explained through children’s play.

B.Studying babies’ play may lead to a better understanding of science.

C.Children may have greater ability to figure out things than scientists.

D.One’s drive for scientific research may become stronger as he grows.

  • 24、Veteran Oksana Chusovitina called time on her legendary career on Sunday night after competing at a record eighth Olympic Games.

After failing to secure a spot in Sunday’s vault (跳马) final, the 46-year-old, representing Uzbekistan, waved to the small crowd inside Tokyo’s Ariake Gymnastics Center, made a heart shape with her hands and briefly cried, as she left the sport’s biggest stage for the last time.

Born in Uzbek capital Tashkent in 1976, Chusovitina took up gymnastics at age 7. “My mother wanted me to give up gymnastics, she was worried about me all the time. I wanted to prove to her that I was not doing it in vain, and I think I eventually succeeded in that.” Chusovitina said of her childhood.

She made her Olympic debut(首次上场)at the 1992 Barcelona Games as part of the gold medal-winning unified team from former Soviet States. Then she represented Uzbekistan, before being granted German citizenship in 2006. She took home a vault silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games for Germany, but switched back to competing for Uzbekistan in 2013.

When Chusovitina’s 3-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia (白血病) in 2002, she sold her possessions and used any prize money she earned to pay for his medical treatment. Her switch to German citizenship was motivated by the promise of a higher income and better medical care.

After her son’s recovery, Chusovitina continued to compete, but this time it was her love for gymnastics that kept her going.

In a sport renowned for its youthful champions, Chusovitina has become a global fan favorite thanks to her longevity. She was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2017, and last year was named the Best Athlete of the Decade (2011-2020) in a public vote held by the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan.

【1】What can we know about Chusovitina?

A.She won a vault silver medal for Uzbekistan in 2008.

B.She thought of giving up gymnastics in her childhood.

C.She has competed in Olympic Games eight times in total.

D.She failed to enter the final in Tokyo Olympics because of her age.

【2】Why did Chusovitina switch to German citizenship?

A.To fulfill the dream of living abroad.

B.To make her son get a better treatment.

C.To gain a higher income for a richer life.

D.To seek a promising future for her career.

【3】Chusovitina can be described as ________.

    A.Reliable and modest

    B.Generous and ambitious

    C.Energetic and devoted

    D.Responsible and determined
