四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. High winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less than an hour.

A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia's east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.

A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转) the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth's rotation isn't big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon (台风) or cyclone.

So what's the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.

All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.

【1】Which of the following about Cyclone Debbie is NOT true?

A.It hit Australia's east coast in March.

    B.The wind speed reached 263 km/h.

C.It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.

D.The flooding stopped after three days.

【2】How does a tropical cyclone happen?

A.When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.

B.When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.

C.When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.

D.When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h.

【3】How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and 8 typhoon?

A.From the time it takes place.

    B.From where it takes place.

    C.From how it takes place.

D.From how many people it kills.

  • 25、Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

Whatever life threw at us each year, our family had one tradition at Christmas: our dog Pepper opened our presents for us.

Last year, everyone made it home for a Christmas get-together. However, it couldn't feel perfect because Pepper's health was becoming worse. Her life had already been longer than we expected—she was fourteen—and yet her mind was still sharp. Her love for life made us feel better. But her body could not keep up with her mind.

Probably it was Pepper's last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she would enjoy it. On Christmas Eve, we each prepared presents for her.

Soon, Pepper selected her first Christmas gift. She turned the present, just as she was a young dog once more. She pulled the paper off the dog treat before she chewed it slowly. Our family was so happy.

Pepper saw the other three presents, and then turned to Mom as if asking, "May I open another?"

    "Go ahead, girl!" Mom encouraged.

For the next few minutes, Pepper opened each of her Christmas presents. While she did, she reminded us of the joy of being together. Our family felt as a whole—not because we were in the same room or city, but because our love brought us together.

Pepper passed away after Christmas. Her peaceful passing made us tearful. Her passing was also a celebration of life, because she gave my family so much love and laughter.

I still treasure (珍惜) Pepper’s final Christmas gift. She taught me that no matter where we each spend the holidays, the smallest act of sincere giving can unite our family through our love. For me, that knowledge is the longest-lasting gift of all.

1The dog Pepper usually _________ at Christmas.

    A. chewed the dog treat slowly B. chose the presents for herself

    C. played with the author's family happily D. opened the presents for the author's family

2The author thought the Christmas wasn't perfect last year because_________.

    A. he didn't get a Christmas gift B. Pepper was in poor health

    C. Pepper died on Christmas Eve D. he didn't feel the joy of being together

3The dog Pepper got _________ Christmas gifts last year.

    A. two B. three C. four D. five

4The underlined phrase "the longest-lasting gift" in the last paragraph refers to "_________".

    A. the friendship with the dog B. the holiday the author spent with family

    C. the Christmas present for the dog D. the life lesson the author learned from Pepper

5Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Pepper passed away peacefully after Christmas.

    B. The smallest act of sincere giving can unite the author's family.

    C. Pepper brought the author's family a lot of trouble and tears.

    D. The author's family felt as a whole because of the love among them.

6The best title for the passage can be "_________".

    A. The Power of Love B. Celebrating Christmas

    C. The Importance of Helping Others D. Enjoying the Happiness of Making Friends

  • 27、   Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers(消费者) these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store.

First, you should check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items(物品) that are on sale and decide if you really need them. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package(包装) influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(成分) on the back. Then compare prices, that is, you should check the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.

Another suggestion for consumers is to buy common items instead of famous brands(品牌). These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or putting ads. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount(折扣) clothing stores can help you save a lot of money.

Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology(心理学)behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the ad hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the ad, or is the ad simply showing an attractive picture? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.

【1】Why does the writer suggest not going into a supermarket hungry?

A.Because you may buy more than you plan to.

    B.Because you may feel tired.

C.Because you may forget to buy enough good.

D.Because you may lose your way.

【2】Before you decide to buy things, what should you do first?

A.Make sure whether they are on sale.

B.Consider if you really need them.

C.Check the sizes of different brands.

D.Read the words on the front of the package.

【3】Why does the writer advise consumers to buy common items?

    A.They come in good packages.

B.They put ads on the newspapers or TV.

C.They are both good and cheaper.

D.The quality is better than that of famous ones.

【4】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A.Ads sometimes tell lies.

    B.Ads hide some information.

    C.Good consumers never read ads.

D.We should make good use of ads.

【5】Where do you probably read the passage?

    A.On a guide map.

    B.On a supermarket ad.

    C.In a science book.

    D.In a life magazine.
