25、Muniz is an artist from Brazil. He uses everyday objects(物品) in special ways. Through his art, Muniz makes people think differently about their everyday lives — even their own garbage(垃圾).
In 2007, Muniz went to one of the world’s largest landfills(垃圾填埋场), Jardim, to take photos. About 3,000 garbage pickers worked there. Their job was to look through the garbage for useful objects. They then made money by selling the objects to recycling companies(废品回收公司). The pickers’ work was dirty and dangerous, and most of them only got about $20 a day, but many of them had a passion for their work. Valter Dos, a picker, told Muniz, “I try to tell people that recycling can help the environment. Our job is meaningful.”
Muniz became friends with Valter Dos and other pickers. They let him take their photos at the landfill. They also found many objects from the landfill to help Muniz. After one of his photos sold for $50,000, Muniz gave the money to a garbage pickers’ organization (组织).
In 2010, a director(导演) Lucy Walker made a movie about Muniz’s work at Jardim called Waste Land. The film helped make people learn about the garbage pickers’ lives. 27、How would you like to live underground? Many families in the town of Coober Pedy, Australia, do just that. Their houses, called dugouts (防空洞), are carved (挖) out of the earth. They are similar to common houses. They have kitchens, bedrooms, and living rooms, but they have few windows. Most of the light in the houses comes from lamps and overhead lights instead of direct sunlight.
People in the town build dugouts because of where they live. Coober Pedy is in a desert in southern Australia. The temperature can climb as high as 50℃ in summer. It can drop as low as zero in winter. Dust storms and swarms of flies (苍蝇) can make life miserable. Underground, though, it is always a comfortable 23℃. People don’t even need fans.
Why would people want to live in such a place? Coober Pedy is an opal-mining (猫眼石矿) town. Opals are colourful stones used for jewellery. The mines (矿) in Coober Pedy produce most of the world’s opals. Early settlers (定居者) there realized that they could avoid the harsh temperatures by building their homes underground.
