21、How much time do you spend looking at your smartphone or computer every day? These electronic devices (电子设备) help us in many ways, but they may also cause health problems.
Too much screen time can cause your eyes to feel dry and sore and is not good for your eyesight. To help your eyes stay healthy, follow the “20-20-20” rule: After 20 minutes’ use of eyes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Your eyes aren’t the only parts of your body that could become worse from using electronic devices. People who write a lot of text messages can develop “texting thumb”, which will lead to the loss of grip strength (抓力).
Scientific research shows that smartphones can also hurt your mind. One of the biggest problems is that using smartphones can affect (影响) your sleep patterns. Doctors say the screen light stops you from feeling sleepy. So they advise people not to use smartphones for at least one hour before trying to sleep.
Another serious danger is Internet addiction (沉迷). Many people turn to the Internet to make light of feelings of stress, sadness, and loneliness. Over time, they might start to depend on the Internet and feel worried if they’re not online. To stop yourself from falling into this kind of trouble, control the time you spend on electronic devices.
To use your smartphone or computer safely, just make sure you follow the advice. Also, remember that there is more to life than looking at an electronic screen.

22、
It is easy to believe that the daily life of a plant is simple and boring. They seem to just stand there and sunbathe. In fact, plants are always busy doing many things. Being rooted in the ground, they must make their own food through photosynthesis(光合作用). Besides, they need to do something to protect themselves from animals that want to eat them. What’s more, measuring light is also one of their daily activities and it helps plants to plan better for the future.
Plants have to measure the changes in the amount of daylight. This helps them to tell what time of the year it is. If a plant is beginning to get more daylight, it knows it’s spring. Because of this, it may then start producing flowers.
If the amount of daylight starts to get low, the plants knows that autumn is coming. It may start to store “food” for its growth. The potato plant, for example, will make tubers(块茎)—the potatoes that we eat.
Plants record not only the amount of daylight they receive, but also the quality of light. Some types of light can better help plants grow. Direct sunlight, for example, works better than light that is being filtered(过滤) through the leaves of other plants. A plant can’t get the right type of light when it is shaded(遮挡) by other plants. It may then begin to grow taller or produce larger leaves in order to get more sunlight.

23、There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him some nails to drive into the back fence. A few days later, it began to become less. He found it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy should now pull out one nail for each day when he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.
The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the fence. It will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar(痕迹) just like this. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry. The wound(伤口) is still there.
