  • 26、A drunken burglar(盗贼) in the Orrell Park area of Liverpool, ended up leaping out of a window after a 10-year-old girl asked him to prove he was a superhero.

The drunken thief who pretended he was Superman to stop a child raising the alarm has been caught after he leapt from the apartment building in his pants to make the girl convinced.

Thief Ethan Adamson, 25, told police that he had broken into a fifth-floor flat after a drinking session, believing it was empty.

But he was horrified when the owner’s 10-year-old daughter woke up while he was there.

From his hospital bed, the thief told reporters, “To keep her quiet, I told her I was really Superman and I’d soon be flying off back to my secret headquarters.”

“She called my bluff (吓唬) and told me, ‘If you’re Superman, show me you can fly or I’ll scream’.

“I had no choice so I stripped to my pants to look more like a superhero and went to the window. I saw another roof below and I thought I could make it but it turned out to be a lot further down than thought. I know it doesn’t make sense but it did to me when I was drunk.”

Police later found him on the roof in just his yellow pants, covered in cuts and bruises after a baffled neighbor heard his cries of pain.

He now faces seven years behind bars for burglary.

Police spokesman Frank Amado said, “He was in quite a serious state and couldn’t move until we got up there using ladders. • 27、A cafe owner has defended her decision to pen a Facebook post (an Internet message to be discussed) stating “No, we are not child-friendly,” saying it breaks her heart when children damage her possessions.

On Monday, the Little French Cafe in Newcastle, Australia, posted an announcement on their Facebook page: “Are we child-friendly? If you are looking for a cafe with a children’ s menu, a play area, lounges for your children to jump on, vast space for your baby carriages, an area for your children to run around, and annoy other customers, while you are unaware of them — then the short answer is ‘No, we are not child-friendly.’ However, if you would like to bring your children here and they are happy to sit at a table with you and behave properly, please come in. Otherwise, there are plenty of places that are specifically designed to entertain your children.” The post has since been deleted.

Some Facebook users called the post “arrogant” and an “attack on parents,” The Newcastle Herald reports. The cafe owner responded with this statement: “I built the cafe myself. It has my blood, sweat and plenty of tears in it.”

The post came about after the cafe owner was asked by a customer, who had left a one-star review on the cafe’s business page, about whether the cafe was child-friendly. Ms Kotz told news.com.au she wrote the bad review because she felt staff reacted negatively towards children at the cafe.

The cafe owner said it broke a piece of her heart every time when she was watching children emptying salt and pepper shakers into her fireplaces, parents changing nappies on her lounges, or kids throwing their own food onto her carpet.

Although the cafe’s policy has attracted a lot of criticism, most people who commented on the Little French Cafe’s Facebook page stood by the owner. One woman named Lesley wrote, “I don’t think there was anything wrong with what you said by any means. If parents want to take their children to your cafe, they need to be responsible for their behavior.”

【1】What is the text mainly about?

A.An Australian cafe’s policy on children.

B.A Facebook post about parents’ manners.

【2】Which of the following is permitted according to the cafe owner’s post?

    A.Parents demanding a children’s menu.

B.Children entertaining themselves in the cafe.

C.Children running around their own carriages.

D.Parents taking well-behaved kids to the cafe.

【3】The cafe owner wrote the post _____.

A.after a kid damaged her possessions

    B.in response to a customer’s question

C.in order to improve the efficiency of the cafe

D.after the cafe was criticized by some Facebook users

    A.It was slightly unfair.

    B.It was very misleading.

    C.It was highly controversial.

    D.It was quite understandable.

  • 28、A seven-word sentence was discovered on a 3,700-year-old comb (梳子),which is likely the oldest known sentence written in letters, according to a new study. The sentence is in Canaanite (迦南语),which is the source (来源) of later letter systems in European languages.

The comb was first discovered in 2016 in Israeli. However,it wasn’t until 2021 that a researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem first noticed the words when checking the photo of the comb. The researchers were not able to directly date the comb. They believed it dated from around 1700 BC based on comparison of the letters with those on pottery (陶器) with a known age.

Garfinkel,a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said,“The Canaanites invented the letters. Nowadays every person in the world can read and write using the letter system. This is really one of the most important achievements of humankind. When you are writing in English, you’re really using Canaanite.”

Small groups of Canaanite letters discovered on broken pieces of pottery before did not leave much room for further research on the lives of the Canaanites. But this find of a sentence written in the first letter-based language opens up the debate about the history during the ancient time period.

Garfinkel said,“The sentence was found on an ivory comb in the ancient city’s palace and temple area, which could suggest that only wealthy men were able to read and write.” The earliest writing system started around 5,000 years ago, which relied on hundreds of pictographs (象形文字) to represent words, ideas and sounds. Canaanites were the first to use letters in their writing system. “It shows that even in the most ancient times there were full sentences, which further suggests that Canaanites stood out among the early civilizations in their use of the written word.”

【1】What do we know about Canaanite?

    A.It has a history of 3,700 years.

B.It is the oldest known language.

C.Its sentences are in many languages.

D.Its letters are still in use at present.

【2】How was the complete sentence in Canaanite found?

A.It was discovered on some pottery.

B.It was identified on a comb in 2016.

C.It was recognized when dating the comb.

D.It was recognized on a photo of the comb.

【3】What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?

    A.The influence of Canaanite letters.

B.The rules of using Canaanite letters.

C.The problem in identifying the Canaanite sentence.

D.The explanation of the discovered Canaanite sentence.

【4】What does Garfinkel think of the new discovery in the last paragraph?

    A.Useless.

    B.Meaningful.

    C.Confusing.

    D.Unacceptable.

  • 29、A woman from West Yorkshire has set a new record for the fastest ever female to row across the Atlantic alone. Victoria Evans, from Huddersfield, took 40 days and 19 hours to make the crossing from Tenerife to Port St Charles in Barbados. On her journey she met sharks, bad weather, and even celebrated her 35th birthday on her own. Her crossing of 2, 559 miles beat the previous record time of 49 days and 7 hours set by a British rower, Kiko Mathews, set in 2018.

Victoria was very much a novice when she first considered the challenge, but she spent three years training, gaining the required qualifications(资格), and preparing to get seaworthy. Her 7-metre boat “True Blue“ was all that protected her from waves at the height of houses, dark nights, storms and heat. The most challenging part of the journey came around the halfway point when a wave knocked out her electrics, and she found herself locked out of her cabin.

The goal of the record-breaking adventure is to raise £50, 000 for the charity Women in Sport, which is to encourage women and girls to take part in sports. She has managed to raise a large amount while on her journey but it is still short of her target.

Victoria’s family followed her progress on social media, and were in Barbados to greet her as she made land. Victoria said, “As we turned into the marina(小船坞), I could hear my friends and family before I could see them. It’s amazing for people to fly to the other side of the world to watch you row basically 50 meters!” She decided to spend some down time in the Caribbean, recovering from her journey, before returning to her job as a lawyer in the UK.

【1】What can we infer about Victoria from paragraph 1?

A.She started her crossing from Huddersfield.
