二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Jerry Morrison was already shooting for the stars at six. “I want to live on another planet,” Jerry told his uncle, Joey Jefferson, at StoryCorps in November. Jefferson, 29. also fell in love with space at an early age. Today he’s a mission operations engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab.

Jefferson, who lives in California, and Jerry, who lives in Florida, meet up a few times a year, and their conversations are always about their common interest in space.

“What kind of planet would you live on? Are you going to say Mars?” Jefferson asked. No, Jerry wants to live much farther from Mars: on an exoplanet (a planet beyond the edge of the solar system) called Kepler-452b. NASA announced its discovery of the Earth-like planet in 2015.

Jefferson wants his nephew to not only hold on to his curiosity but also share what he learns with others. And Jerry has already gotten the chance to do that. As a kindergartner last year, he taught a lesson to the fifth graders in his school about the planets of the solar system.

“It was a big chance for me,” Jerry said. “I felt so proud.”

Jerry said he learned about space from his uncle. “I learned from you a lot, like more than I could imagine.” Jerry said.

“You’re learning so much by yourself, too, that you’re teaching me as well,” Jefferson said. “And that’s really cool. The more you learn, the more you realize the little things in life we take for granted are the very things that make life possible. So when I look up at the stars. I think about that.”

【1】What do Jerry Morrison and Joey Jefferson enjoy talking about when they meet?

    A.Their shared love for space.

    B.Their friends and families.

    A.He is quite adaptable.

B.He has a desire to explore.

    C.He will work at NASA.

D.He is influenced by his mother.

【3】What did Jerry take pride in?

    A.Sharing knowledge at school.

    B.Having strong curiosity.

    C.Knowing a lot about space.

    D.Attending a lecture on space.

    【4】What can best describe Jefferson?

    A.A proud engineer.

    B.An imaginative story-teller.

    C.An encouraging model.

    D.A hardworking teacher.

  • 27、European rabbits might not be much to look at. They have a grayish-brown coat, small ears, and short legs. But these animals are not as ordinary as they seem. European rabbits live in grass habitats. They are somewhat picky eaters. They dig and disturb (弄乱) the ground while they look for food. “Their activities can create areas of bare (无遮蔽的) soil which plants require,”   rabbit expert Diana Bell says.

Rabbits also contribute nutrients to the soil after they leave their waste there. Researchers have found that this activity benefits lowland grassland habitats, which can help maintain beneficial conditions for many plants, insects, and bird species. Without the help of rabbits, many of these species would have to leave the area or might even die out.

But due to threats such as disease, habitat loss, and hunting, the animals are classified as endangered in their native region, the Iberian Peninsula. One disease called myxomatosis is an insect-spread virus from South America that was intentionally introduced by a farmer in the mid-1950s to control the rabbit population. About 90% of European rabbits died during early outbreaks and the disease continues to affect rabbit populations on the Iberian Peninsula.

To help rabbit populations recover, Bell has suggestions in the habitat recovery project. She is encouraging people to do their part to help protect the rabbits. For instance, people can just create piles of branches and make sloping mounds of soil (土堆) in their spare time and then the rabbits can find cover. Actions like these won’t take people much energy or time, and over the past three years, researchers have found they are working. “Our work resulted in evidence of rabbit activity in significantly higher numbers,” Bell says.

Environmentalists have used other methods to help protect decreasing rabbit populations such as creating wildlife corridors, which are unbroken animal habitats that function like animal high-ways. “Efforts to reintroduce them on the Iberian Peninsula have been largely unsuccessful but we’ve managed to do this in the U.K.” Bell says.

【1】What do we know about European rabbits?

A.They play a role in the grassland ecosystem.

    B.Their appearance makes them unappreciated.

C.Their digging does harm to the local environment.

D.They prefer to cooperate with other species to avoid danger.

【2】What can be concluded from the example mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.Wild animals adapt themselves slowly to foreign environments.

B.It is unwise to use viruses to control rabbit populations.

C.Inappropriate human activity may bring crisis to animals.

D.People should create more bare soil for European rabbits.

【3】Which of the following can best describe Bell’s suggestions on protecting rabbits?

    A.Practical but costly.

    B.Simple and effective.

    C.Creative but unpopular.

    D.Traditional and acceptable.

【4】What is the structure of the text?

    A.1/23/45

    B.1/234/5

    C.12/345

【5】What does the author intend to tell us in the text?

A.Ways to create a balanced ecosystem.

B.Reasons why European rabbits like digging.

C.Measures to control the spread of European rabbits.

D.Efforts to recover the population of European rabbits.

  • 28、Katherine Johnson was the most recognized of the African American “human computers”, and she was a NASA female mathematician who calculated(计算)trajectories for early space flights-from the 1930s until the 1980s.

Born in 1918, in the little town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, Katherine Johnson was simply attracted by numbers. As a child, she counted everything. She counted the steps on the road, the steps up to school, the number of dishes she washed. By the time she was 10 years old, she had been a high school freshman, which was truly amazing in a time when school for African-Americans normally stopped at eighth grade. To realize her math potential, her father drove his family 120 miles to Institute, West Virginia, where blacks could continue high school education. Katherine’s excellent performance proved her father’s decision was the right one:Teachers allowed Katherine to skip several grades to graduate from high school at 14 and from college at 18, majoring in mathematics, as the top student of the historically black West Virginia State College in Institute.

In 1953, after years as a teacher and later as a stay-at-home mom, she began working for NASA, which began hiring women to measure and calculate the results of wind tunnel tests in 1935. In a time before the electronic computers, these women were called “computer”. Even after NASA began using electronic computers, the astronaut John Glenn requested that she should personally recheck the calculations made by the new electronic computers before his flight.

She continued to work at NASA until her retirement in 1986. Her calculations proved important to the success of the Apollo lunar landing program and the United States journey into space. Her story was the basis for the 2016 film Hidden Figures.

Katherine Johnson, a great mathematician, physicist, space scientist and the last “computer” who wore skirts, passed away on February 24, 2020.

【1】What can we learn about Katherine from paragraph 2?

A.She left school at eighth grade.

    B.She skipped grades in college.

C.She went to high school at 14.

D.She was gifted in math as a child.

【2】How long did Katherine work at NASA?

    A.For 18 years.

    B.For 33 years.

    C.For 51 years.

    D.For 67 years.

【3】Why was Katherine called “computer” in NASA?

A.She played the role of a computer.

B.She calculated as fast as computers.

C.She was in charge of the computers.

D.She was skilled in operating computers.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Female scientists at NASA

    B.A great female mathematician’s decision

C.Katherine Johnson, a computer who wore skirts

    D.Katherine Johnson’s great educational background

  • 29、I often hear some of you saying, "I don't care what other people think! I do whatever I want!" There is a strong wish for independence in adolescence (青春期)and you say you only care about your own opinion. But be honest - don't you care about what certain people think? Most teenagers have a circle of people who can influence them. They care very much about what this circle of people think, especially about them.

Most teenagers want to be independent, but they don't want to be alone. They don't want to stand out, away from the crowd. They want to have connection to other people, especially other teenagers.

During adolescence, friendships with other teens become very important. They care about what other teenagers think because they want to be accepted and they are afraid of what other people think. Fear makes them care.

Some teenagers are leaders and some are followers. You might think that teenage leaders don't care what other people think, but that is not true. After all, a leader really isn't a leader unless other people follow. If leaders don't care about what followers think, those followers may leave and follow someone else. Followers care about what the leader thinks because they want to be part of the group.

There is a famous playwright named William Shakespeare. In one of his plays, Hamlet, the character Hamlet said, "To thine own self be true." In other words, whatever you do, always be true to yourself. Sure, teenagers can care about what other people think of them, but the most important thing is what they think of themselves. This is one of the most important tasks that teenagers should have.

【1】What do we know about teenagers from the text?

    A.They value friendship.

    B.They have difficulty making friends.

C.They are deaf to others' advice.

D.They keep themselves away from others.

【2】What can we know from paragraph 4?

    A.Teenagers prefer to be leaders.

B.Teenage leaders must listen to followers.

C.Teenage followers should read leaders' mind.

D.Teenage leaders and followers should care about each other.

【3】What suggestion does the author give to teens?

    A.Think of others around you.

B.Do what you think is right.

    C.Make friends whenever possible.

D.Go easy on yourself and others.
