26、Researchers at the University of British Columbia in Canada have found that humans grew cacao (可可) trees and used cacao starting around 5,300 years ago. But the new discovery shows people grew cacao trees about 1,500 years earlier than what was known before. The researchers found evidence (证据) of cacao’s use at an old village in the highlands of southeastern Ecuador. Time has had little influence on the village, so they were able to find a lot of evidence of the use of cacao after examining the remains of very old objects at the Santa Ana-La Florida archeological site.
The researchers found very small pieces from the cacao tree in the remains of containers and other objects, as well as genetic material (遗传物质) from the tree. They also found a substance in the cacao tree but not in its wild relatives. This suggests that humans grew the tree for food purposes.
But thousands of years ago, cacao was used to make drinks. The objects on which cacao was found suggest a lot about how people used the substance at that time. They clearly drank it. There is no decided history of indigenous populations in South or Central America using cacao to make chocolate the way people do now. By the time Spanish explorers arrived in Central America in the late 1400s, people were using it to make hot and cold chocolate drinks with spices. By the 1580s, Spain began buying cacao from abroad and spreading it to other European countries. By the 1800s, technology developed in the Netherlands made it possible to turn cacao into a solid chocolate product.
Michael Laiskonis, who teachers chocolate-making classes at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, introduces his students to the history of chocolate. He tells his students, for example, about a recipe (配方) from the 1600s that mixed Mayan and Aztec types of cacao drinks with Europena influences. Laiskonis said chocolate is “something that’s always been changing.”

27、 Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be hot, time-consuming and difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load, which has proven no easy task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step the delicate plants heavily. Tarzan, however, could overcome the challenge.
Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “When it comes to a farm environment, many robots tend to get twisted together or get stuck.” he said. “What's more,” he added, “it's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human assisting them.”
What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers said. “The animal-sloths move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid walking around on the forest ground.” Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand-to-hand along wires hung above a field. He named their invention Tarzan.
Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, robotics researcher at the University of Texas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or imitate mammals. But he says he admired Tarazan for its using swinging movement to save energy-and that the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.
Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors and cameras. But future versions could deliver water to particular thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs something nutritional. And adding a third "hand" could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Eventually the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.
【1】What was the problem with robots before Tarzan?
A.Lacking practical experience B.Causing damages to crops
C.Being unable to work on rainy days D.Having heavy bodies and moving slowly
【2】What did Jonathan Rogers say about many robots?
A.They tend to fight with each other B.They depend much on humans
C.They are designed by farm experts D.They adapt to a farm environment quickly
【3】Which aspect of Tarzan impressed Mark Spong most?

A.Tarzan can be used widely B.Tarzan will be cheaply available
C.Tarzan has simplified farming greatly D.Tarzan will replace farmers gradually
28、Consider what goes through your mind after you’ve taken your seat on an airplane. You’ve not seen the captain, but his or her voice comes over the air. “Hello, this is your captain speaking.” Are you about to fly the friendly skies? What you probably don’ realize is that you do make quick judgments (判断) based on very few factors the moment you hear “hello”.
Experts have discovered that “hello” carries enough information for listeners to draw judgments about the speakers personality, such as how reliable (可信赖的) he or she is. They recorded 64 students reading a telephone conversation. The word “hello” was then picked from each recording, and 320 different students listened to that word through a computer. The students were asked to score the voices according to personality, including attractiveness and warmth, giving them points from l to 10. Although every voice was played in one third a second, the students formed an opinion quickly.
It is amazing that from such short voices of speech they can get such an obvious impression of a person. And whether it is correct, their impressions are mostly the same as what the other listeners get. The research also suggests that people’ impressions are based on the tone (语调) of voice. Men and women who present the strength of their voices are regarded as more reliable.
The speed with which the students made their judgments makes much sense. Deciding who to trust can be important to your survival. There’s no point in listening to someone talk for 5 minutes to decide if they’re reliable or not — you could be dead already. The discovery may help improve computer-made voice technologies, experts say.
【1】Why does the author mention “the captain” in paragraph 1?
A.To present a fact.
B.To make a prediction.

29、It’s no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influences and celebrities (well, famous people like Justin Bieber) — so it’s easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.
But, how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at content shared by celebrities, new research has found.
The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower ‘appearance satisfaction’. Additionally, it found that engaging with content posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at content posted by strangers, including celebrities.
Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it’s hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influences, but when we’re comparing ourselves to our friends, it feels like we should- or could-live the way they do.
“One possible explanation is that people may believe a post showing appearance as being much more acquirable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post, ” he said. “At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore assume the images they share to be more unrealistic. “
This is not just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers us. Maybe you’ve been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role. Maybe. . .
All this is to say the obvious: we only see part of people’s lives -and if it’s getting you down, you’re probably comparing your insides to other people’s outsides. Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So, put down your phone, get offline, be thankful and try to live your own life.
【1】What did the new study find?
A.Social media invites unfavorable comments.
B.Friends’ posts affect us more than celebrities’.
C.Celebrities have a negative influence on our life.
D.Body image causes more concern than social life.
【2】Why are we more likely to compare with our friends according to Swam?

B.We know the way they live.
C.Their lifestyles are accessible.
D.We are curious about their life.
【3】What does the underlined word in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.limited.
B.related.
