二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、My brother Tom pushed me hard with his elbow. “Walk faster. We have to make it to the front door before Dad sees Mr. Fleming. He’s sitting on a bench across the street.” I glanced over my shoulder at our father, who walked several paces behind us. He was busy searching for the house keys and didn’t notice the man we wished to avoid. “If Dad stops to talk to him, our lives will be ruined! By tomorrow it will be all over school again that our dad is friendly with a bum. Remember the last time? I got into that fight because Jim said Dad was just like Mr. Fleming—a miscreant(恶棍)and that people of the same kind tend to stick together.” I didn’t know what a miscreant was, but I figured it was something bad. “I don’t know why Dad bothers with him. Mr. Fleming has no job. His family left him. He spent time in jail. He doesn’t even have his own home. ”

Just at that time, Mr. Fleming saw my father. “Mr. Clements! How are you today?” He crossed the street and shook our father’s hand. “I was announced last week that I’ll be out of work.” There was a note of concern in Mr. Fleming’s voice when he replied. “I’m sorry to hear that. If there is anything I can do for you, you just knock on my door.” Dad’s eyebrow furrowed as if he was in deep thought. “I have a job offer in New Jersey that I’m pretty sure I’ll have to accept. It’s far away, so I’ll only be able to come home on weekends. If you have the time I would like to hire you to take care of the things here during my absence.” Shock, then hope ran across Mr. Fleming’s face. “Are you sure you want to hire me? You know what people will say.” “Let them talk. I’m hiring you because you are a good man, a hard worker, who made a mistake in his life—a mistake you’ve paid for dearly.”

After Mr. Fleming left, Tom boldly questioned our Dad’s decision. “You can’t hire him! He’s no good! Nobody will want to be friends with us if he’s around!” Dad’s words, when he quoted Martin Luther King Jr., were firm: “The final measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Dad looked from my face to Tom’s. “Do you understand? Just because other people won’t approve, our family shouldn’t be afraid to help him.”

Dad cupped my chin in his large hand, continued, “You know, after the factory laid off Mr. Fleming, his little daughter became ill. In desperation, he stole the drugs he needed to help keep her alive. He went to prison. While he served his sentence, the child died, and his sad wife returned to her parents where later she also died. He was left with nothing, not even his dignity.” I suddenly felt terrible. I could tell by the way Tom looked at the ground instead of up at Dad that he regretted what he’d said about Mr. Fleming.

The new year brought many changes to our family. We only saw our father on the weekends, but we didn’t worry when Dad was away because of Mr. Fleming. He handled everything with a smile, from a broken pipe to a leaky roof. Some nights Mom invited him to stay for dinner during which his tales of travels during World War II held our attention. And it was Mr. Fleming who carried a bloody Tom four blocks to the hospital when he fell off his bike.

Despite the good Mr. Fleming did for our family, some people continued to keep away from him—and now us. Mom was dropped from several committees. Tom and I were not invited to classmates’ parties. Strangely enough, we found that none of this bothered us because we knew what Dad said had already rooted in our hearts.

1What made people keep away from Mr. Fleming?

    A. His having no job.   B. His bad name.

    C. His wife leaving him.   D. His being poor.

2The reason why there was a fight between Tom and Jim is that Jim ______ .

    A. was rude to Tom’s father   B. spoke ill of Tom’s father

    C. treated Mr. Fleming well   D. made fun of Mr. Fleming

    A. he felt pity for the poor man

    B. he wanted to show mercy to the man

    C. he considered the man to be responsible

  • 27、In recent weeks, wildfires—largely a result of increasingly frequent or more severe dry weather—destroying entire communities in California, have left thousands of people homeless and millions of places with air polluted by smoke. Meanwhile, scientists report that the powerful heat waves have cost the lives of tens of thousands in recent years.

The climate crisis (危机) has already had a bad effect on our lives by worsening heat waves, increasing spread of diseases, causing harmful air pollution and endangering our food safety. It is not surprising to say that the climate crisis brings serious and urgent danger to millions of people on the planet, especially the poor, the elderly, children and those already suffering from existing illnesses.

Extreme heat has already made some parts of the world not fit for living. In the United States, heat waves are sending more and more people to the emergency room and causing more deaths each year than floods, and even hurricanes and typhoons combined.

At the same time, rising temperatures add even more energy and violence to the harmful storms destroying communities from the Carolinas to the Philippines during increasingly deadly hurricane and typhoon seasons.

A warmer world also means a friendlier world for mosquitoes (蚊子) and other pests that carry bacteria (细菌) like Zika, malaria and Lyme. Not only are they able to live longer and reproduce more often, but they’re also able to travel and spread diseases farther than before. Mosquitoes already kill more people each year than all other species—including humans—combined, so increasing numbers and ranges due to warmer temperatures will only worsen their result.

We can draw a direct line from burning fuels to the higher temperatures making our world an increasingly dangerous place. But perhaps the most immediate and widespread health effect of pouring dangerous emissions (排放物) into air is the air pollution it brings to our cities and towns.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

  • 28、Government in Tibet have denied (否认) the everlasting closing of Mount Qomolangma National Nature Reserve (MQNNR).

The announcement came after a report spread quickly online saying the base camp of the world’s highest mountain was “forever closed due to heavy pollution” and caused a universal misunderstanding.

MQNNR was set up in 1988. Covering an area of more than 33,800 square km, it is home to one of the world’s most weak ecosystems (生态系统).

Kelsang, deputy director of the reserve administration, said ordinary tourists are allowed to visit areas around Rongpo Monastery, almost 5,000 meters above sea level. As for travelers who have a climbing permit they can go to the base camp at an altitude of 5,200 meters. The mountaineering activities have been permitted by the regional forestry department.

To preserve the environment surrounding Mount Qomolangma, China carried out three major clean-ups at an altitude of 5,200 meters and above last spring, collecting eight tons of household wastes, human wastes and mountaineering trash. This year, the clean-up will continue, and the remains of mountaineering victims (受难者) above 8,000 meters will be centrally dealt with for the first time. Meanwhile, the number of people who stay at the base camp will be kept under 300.

Recently, there are 85 wildlife protectors in the reserve, and 1,000 herders have part-time jobs going around and cleaning up garbage.

These measures aim to strike a balance between various demands such as environmental protection, local poverty relief, mountaineering and education, said Wang Shen, county chief of Dingri at the mountain foot.

  • 29、If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

【1】The opening paragraph is mainly intended to _______.

    B. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

    A. Forgotten Wisdom in America.

    B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language.

    D. Chinese Culture for Westerners.

【4】The passage is likely to appear in ______.
