  • 26、An American woman Anna Jarvis was the first person to decide the mothers should have a holiday in their honor each year. Miss Jarvis started her campaign in 1906 in her home city Philadelphia. She wrote thousands of letters to congressmen(国会议员), city officials, teachers and newspaper publishers, proposing an official holiday for mothers. She traveled all over America, trying to get support for the idea. Her battle went on for years.

In 1914, the Congress declared the second Sunday in May each year as Mother's Day. Anna Jarvis wanted Mother's Day to be a simple event. She thought children could honor their mothers by spending some time with them as an act of love and respect. However, the holiday turned out to be a major event for department stores, flower shops and greetingcard industry, which Miss Jarvis didn't like.

Americans spend millions of dollars on gifts for their mothers on this day. Younger children often try to prepare and serve breakfast for their mothers. Fathers may offer to take care of children so that mothers can enjoy themselves. The holiday becomes an important time for family gathering.

    D. Mother's Day is an important day for Americans

【2】 Miss Jarvis proposed Mother's Day in order that people could show their love and respect to their mothers ________.

    A. by spending some time with them

    B. by offering them precious gifts

    C. by eating in restaurants together

    A. all women, young and old, receive gifts

    B. families gather together

    D. the way people spend Mother's Day

  • 27、Turf houses are, quite simply, half underground houses with a grassy roof. They date back over 1,000 years to the 9th Century, when building a turf house was the traditional way in Iceland.

Iceland’s resources then consisted of plenty of wetlands and volcanic stone, but relatively little woodland compared to settlers’ home countries. 【1】

Like many traditions, turf houses survived, but developed. In the 14th Century Viking-style longhouses (thin, long, shared spaces) gave way to individual, smaller buildings. 【2】 Turf houses made way to more modern, recognisable buildings in the 20th Century, but they still exist as museums and heritage (遗产) buildings today.

【3】 Due to the difficult climate, it was essential that the houses should be well-insulated (保温). Besides, the lack of availability of wood and the richness of other suitable materials including lava rock and turf made turf houses available. Turf provides great insulation for buildings compared to those made of wood or stone alone.

From the turn of the 20th Century, Icelanders increasingly moved into larger city settlements, leaving turf houses behind. 【4】 Modern turf houses tend to operate as museums, though some offer short-term holiday accommodation.

While the number of turf houses in Iceland reduced greatly in the 20th Century, the rapid growth of Iceland’s tourism in the last 20 years or so has encouraged Iceland to reexamine the value of traditional buildings. 【5】 The Turf House Tradition was listed as potential nominees (提名) for UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Iceland, which included just six places of importance.

    A.Turf houses have great advantages.

B.The last residents moved out of their turf-houses around 1966.

C.There are two main reasons why turf houses were built in Iceland.

D.That’s why early Icelanders faced a shortage of building materials.

E.So, using stone and turf was a reasonable choice in building shelter.

F.A big step towards protecting this national heritage was made in 2011.

G.The late 18th Century saw the arrival of the turf house with wooden ends.

  • 28、   Getting paid to stay in bed all day sounds pretty good.Bui what if someone offered you$23,000 to stay in bed for two months? That’s the deal that a research team is offering to 24 volunteers.

Researchers are looking for volunteers to help them study the influences of weightlessness on the human body by spending 60 days lying down.Lying in bed isn’t exactly the same as being weightless, but the influences on the human body are similar.

When astronauts spend a long time in an environment with no gravity, like the International Space Station(ISS),their bodies are affected in many ways. After a couple of months on the ISSastronauts hearts don’t beat as hard.Their muscles(肌肉)become weaker because they no longer have to work against gravity.Their bones(骨头)may break more easily. There may also be changes in the astronauts sleep habits.

Dr.Armaud Beck, the researcher in charge of the study, said his goal was to measure the influences of weightlessness, and also to find ways to prevent problems. The study will take 88 days altogether.During the first two weeks the volunteers will be tested to establish(建立)their levels of fitness. Then they will spend 60 days lying in bed with their heads a little lower than their bodies. They will have to do everything while lying downincluding brushing their teeth and going to the bathroom.Dr.Beck said the rule is that they must have at least one shoulder touching the bed at all times.Half of the volunteers in the study will be taking capsules(胶囊)containing special food supplements(增补物)several times a day to see if they help reduce the health problems caused by weightlessness.

The last two weeks of the study will be spent trying to let the volunteers recover.Volunteers must be men between the ages of 20 and 45 who are in perfect health. They must be non-smokers.

The study will take place from September 1 st to November. The first two days are the time for volunteers to sign in.

B.The study will last for more than three months.

C.Volunteers’fitness tests will last till the end of September.

D.They’ll lie on the bed all the time for the whole October.

  • 29、Walters had always had a fascination with skiing, even though he was born in Kuwait, a place “as snow less as you can get”. He and his wife moved to a Scottish island 25 years ago and bought a run - down hotel, which they run as a self-catered (不包餐的) holiday house. Handing over the keys to guests on a Friday, Walters said, “We’re retired, and it gives me more time to do the things I want to do”.

It’s why Walters thought he might enjoy teaching people to ski. He had, after all, enjoyed the bread-making classes he used to run. “I like teaching people things,” he says.

Walters first skied at 11 on a school trip to Austria. “We were allowed to go up the mountain on the second day and I remember, with a friend, being so scared of skiing down that we actually walked down,” he says. Yet it didn’t put him off. Their teacher started organizing Sunday trips to Glenshee, the skiing area in the Highlands, and Walters became part of the school’s ski team.

Once he had taken the week-long instructor course in the Cairngorms — followed by further training — he wasn’t sure there would be an easy route into work. Then he spotted a request on Face book from a company that teaches children to ski, for someone to replace one of their instructors who had injured herself. Three days later, Walters arrived in Switzerland. “I was thinking: ‘This is going to be awful, because I’ll be this old guy,’” he says. But he wasn’t even the oldest instructor — there was one in his early 7 as. It went so well that, by the second day, his group of 11- and 12- year - olds were skiing down easy runs.

He now regularly works with the company, teaching groups of children during their school holidays. Walters spends most of his time dealing with beginners skiing fairly slowly. He isn’t trying to teach them to go as fast as possible—he’s trying to teach them how to ski with control, reduce speed, and get down the mountain without killing themselves.” He has just taken a further qualification as a ski instructor, reaching a level that enabled him to teach almost anywhere.

【1】What made it possible for Walters to teach people to ski?

A.The self - catered holiday hotel.

    B.The sufficient time after retirement.

C.His childhood skiing experience in Kuwait.

D.The profits made from running a holiday house.

    B.Make him lose interest.

【3】What was Walters concerned about when he applied for his ski instructor’s job?

A.He was too old for the job.

B.He would work for a short time.

    C.He lacked necessary trainings.

    D.He was less experienced.

【4】What can we learn about Walters from the last paragraph?

A.He is a lazy ski instructor.

B.He will apply for a better job.

    C.He is patient with beginners.

    D.He works as a full-time ski instructor.
