二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   There was a black woman in our school whose everyday job was to wipe down the lockers, clean the floor, and check the drawings on the wall. She never seemed to smile and was always shouting at kids for throwing trash on the ground.

One afternoon, I saw that two boys kicked over garbage cans, spilling garbage. "What are you doing? Get back and clean this mess up!" the woman shouted. The boys ran away, making faces to her.

She sighed sadly and began collecting the trash. A few tears fell down her face. I went up to help her pick up piece of crumpled paper and smiled at her. The woman looked at me with shock, and for a moment I thought she would smile back, but she simply went to gather the trash. The next time when I saw her, I called out, "Good morning!" She stopped and looked at me. This time, she smiled back. It was a really beautiful smile.

We continued this relationship. We both smiled and waved as we met but we didn't know each other, until one day when she asked me a question, "You are not from around here, are you?"

"Well, I've lived here all my life, if that's what you mean," I told her.

She was surprised. "Oh, I just thought you talk differently and you're so friendly. I didn't get that a lot…" she said.

After that day, we have become real friends. What this experience has taught me is that little gestures of kindness are often the most appreciated. By offering a simple smile and pleasant hello, I helped give this woman a better day and gained a valuable friendship.

  • 27、As you probably know, leaning a foreign language is sometimes challenging. But it can also be fun. We spend hundreds of hours at school trying to get our tongues round different vocabulary and grammar in order to cam a qualification. But learning to speak a second language is more than just passing an exam-it opens doors to new opportunities, helps you to communicate with others and makes travelling overseas more satisfactory.

It might come as a surprise that the number of teenagers learning foreign languages in UK secondary schools has dropped by 45% since the turn of the millennium. German and French have fallen the most—these languages from two of the UK’s closest trading partners have declined at GCSE level. Another survey of secondary schools suggests a third of students have dropped at least one language from their GCSE exam options. There are some reasons for this, including many students` opinion that languages are difficult. Others have questioned the need for a second language when translation technology is advancing.

Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director for business group the CBI, believes that “The decline in language learning in schools must be reversed, or else the UK will be less competitive globally and young people less prepared for the modem world. ”But even for those who are eager to study another language, the opportunity is being reduced. In Scotland, for example, foreign language subjects are being pressed out of many secondary school timetables with some head teachers blaming pressure on the curriculum.

However, some native English speakers have admitted the benefits of speaking another tongue. Cassandra Scott, from Edinburgh, studied three languages in her final year at school. She is now a freelance translator in Edinburgh, and says “Learning languages at school really set the course for my career.”

【1】How does the author show the fact that fewer people have learned foreign languages?

    A.By showing personal research.

    B.By giving specific examples.

    C.By analyzing underlying reasons.

    D.By offering background information.

【2】What does the underlined word “reversed” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Developed rapidly.

    B.Pushed quickly.

    C.Changed completely.

    D.Maintained properly.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.A satisfactory overseas travel requires another foreign language.

B.Leaning languages at school may contribute to one’s future career.

C.Native English speakers benefit more from speaking another tongue.

D.With the translation technology, there’s no need to lean foreign languages.

【4】What’s the purpose of the passage?

A.To criticize people’s ignorance of foreign languages.

B.To stress the significance of learning foreign languages.

C.To show the result of dropping learning foreign languages.

D.To raise people’s awareness of protecting native languages.

  • 28、A new study shows frequent (频繁的) travelers are more satisfied with their lives than people who don’t travel at all. Chun-Chu Chen, an assistant professor from Washington State University, conducted a survey to find out whether or not travel and tourism experiences have a long-term effect on happiness and wellness.

His analysis (分析) shows individuals who pay more attention to tourism-related information and frequently discuss their travel plans with friends are more likely to go on vacations than those who aren’t always thinking about their next trip. More importantly, participants (参与者) in the survey who reported regularly traveling at least 75 miles away from home reported being about 7% happier when asked about their overall well-being than those who reported traveling very infrequently or not at all.

“While things like family life and friends play a bigger role in overall reports of well-being, travel experiences do appear to have a noticeable effect on self-reported life satisfaction,” Chen said. Previous studies have examined the health and wellness benefits of a single trip or vacation. Chen’s research takes these previous studies one step further by looking at the benefits of travel over the course of a year.

Participants in the study were asked about the importance of travel in their lives, how much time they spent looking into and planning future vacations, and how many trips they went on over a year. Out of the 500 survey participants, a little over half reported going on more than four pleasure trips a year. Only 7% of participants did not take any vacations.

Based on the results of the study, Chen said travel companies could start social media campaigns (运动), such as creating hashtags (话题标签) about the scientific benefits of vacation, to raise people’s interest in discussing their opinions about travel. “If you want to see someplace new, this research will hopefully encourage you to start planning your next vacation,” he said.

【1】Which aspect of travel did Chen’s research focus on?

    A.Its early history.

    B.Its future development.

C.Its role in making people happy.

D.Its importance to the healthcare industry.

    【2】How is paragraph 2 developed?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By stating arguments.

    C.By analyzing causes.

    D.By providing survey results.

【3】What did participants need to do in Chen’s research?

A.Share travel information with their friends.

    B.Answer questions about travel.

C.Take a trip with their family.

    D.Prepare a travel plan.

【4】What is Chen’s suggestion for travel companies?

    A.Working together with tourism experts.

    B.Offering vacation planning services.

    C.Designing new travel programs.

    D.Carrying out online activities.

Some studies in the unites states have suggested that young children and teenagers who spend many hours at computers tend to get lonely and even depressed.

【5】 But parents and teachers used to help children to learn to use computers in responsible and creative ways.” says teacher Jane Shields. “And children should also learn when it is time to log off the computers and head outside to do something different.”
