The London Underground rail network, also called “the Tube”, is a great way to travel to, from and around central London. Read advice on how to master the London Underground public transport.

    Tube Zones

The London Underground rail network is divided into nine zones. Zone 1 is in central London and zones 6 to 9 are on the outskirts of the city. There are 11 Tube lines.

    Tube Prices

Buy a Visitor Oyster card, Oyster card, Travelcard or use a contactless (非接触式的) payment card to get the best value as cash is the most expensive way to pay. An adult cash fare (费用) on the London metro for a single journey in zone 1 is £4.90. The same Tube fare with Visitor Oyster card, Oyster card or contactless payment card is £2.40. If you plan on travelling around London to do some sightseeing and visit some of London’s best attractions, why not get a London Pass and save even more money?

    Opening and Closing Times

London Underground opening times vary from line to line, but the first London subway trains normally start running around 5 am, from Monday to Saturday, with reduced operating hours on Sunday. Avoid travelling during rush hours (weekdays, 7-9 am and 5.30-7 pm) if at all possible. London metro trains normally run until around midnight. A 24-hour underground service operates on certain lines. Check with staff at the particular tube station you plan on using to find out exactly when the last train runs.

D.The opening times are different from line to line.

  • 27、Last summer, staff at the San Diego Zoo welcomed 41 baby turtles (海龟) from the Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle species, which is native to South Asia. It makes the Zoo the first officially recognized organization in North America to hatch (孵化) and raise the species.

Three Indian narrow-headed softshell turtles have been at the Zoo for over 20 years. All that time, zoo staff had been hoping they would one day reproduce. “This is a thrilling moment for us, and a big step forward in the protection of this species,” said Kim Gray, director of the Zoo.

The eggs were found in two separate nests (窝). Some of the turtles hatched in their habitat, while most of the eggs were stored in an artificial box to create the best conditions for survival. Turtle experts at the zoo say eggs in the habitat are often difficult to find, as the turtles like to lay their eggs overnight and cover them with dirt.

The species is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, though it’s unclear how many remain in the wild. Environ- mental pollution, habitat destruction, the international pet trade and human food harvesting have all led to the species’ reduction over the years.

“We have been caring for these turtles for a very long time, and part of that care is to gain a greater understanding of the species’natural history,” Kim Gray added. “With the knowledge we gain here at the Zoo, we can better assist our partners in India to help this essential species develop and grow in their native habitat.”

【1】Why did Kim Gray feel excited at this reproduction?

    A.The Zoo got officially recognized.

B.It was a breakthrough in turtle protection.

C.A great many turtles were hatched at once.

D.An endangered turtle species was saved.

【2】What made the turtle eggs in the habitat hard to find?

    A.Their dark color.

    B.The artificial box.

    C.Their being dirt-covered.

    D.The low light at night.

【3】What does Paragraph 4 focus on about the turtles?

A.The time when listed as endangered.

    B.Human activities to save them.

C.Their existing number in the wild.

    D.Factors endangering them,

【4】Who might be most interested in the text according to the last paragraph?

    A.Pet lovers.

    B.Zoologists.

    C.Environmentalists.

    D.Zoo visitors.

  • 28、When your alarm clock rings and you drag yourself out of bed, you probably wonder: Why on earth does school have to start so early?

Fortunately, there is a new law to back you up — or better still, science.

A law in California, passed on Oct 13, requires that public middle schools begin classes no earlier than 8:00 am and that high schools start no earlier than 8:30 am. The law will go into effect by November 1, 2022.

Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.

“The effect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University, told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of being overweight and diabetes (糖尿病).

In the short run, students’ school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are alert in class and get much more satisfying grades.

Some might say that asking students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11:00 pm. So when school starts at 8:00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5 - 9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime.

This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generations of children will come to appreciate this historic day and our governor for taking action.”

【1】Which of the following is TRUE about the law?

A.The law has not been put into practice yet.

B.The law will be passed by November 1, 2022.

C.The law is made by a university in California.

D.The law requires schools to start later than 8:30 am.

【2】What can we learn from Bhargava’s words?

A.The new law is of lasting benefit to students.

B.Lack of sleep affects adults more than children.

C.The amount of sleep people need changes with age.

D.Enough sleep makes sure that students are mentally healthy.

【3】What does the underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Friendly.

    B.Honest.

    C.Calm.

    D.Sharp.

    【4】What’s the text mainly about?

A.Lack of sleep could lead to health problems.

B.California is pushing back school start times.

C.A law to start the school day later takes effect.

D.Teenagers’ biological changes affect their sleep patterns.

  • 29、A study of violinists found that merely good players practised as much as better players, leaving other factors such as quality of education, learning skills and perhaps natural talent to account for the difference.

This finding challenges the 10, 000-hour rule promoted in Malcolm Gladwell’s 1993 study of violinists and pianists. Gladwell states that enough practice will make an expert of anyone. “The idea has been popular and entrenched in our culture for years. It’s not an idiom but an overstatement,” said Brooke Macnamara, the lead author. “When it comes to human skill, a complex combination of environmental factors and genetic factors explains the performance differences across people.”

Macnamara and her colleagues set out to repeat part of the 1993 study to see whether they reached the same conclusion. They interviewed three groups of 13 violinists regarded as best, good, or less accomplished about their practice habits, before having them complete daily diaries of their activities over a week. While the less skillful violinists reached an average of about 6,000 hours of practice by the age of 20, there was little to separate the good from the best, with each reaching an average of about 11,000 hours. In all, the number of hours spent practising accounted for about a quarter of the skill difference across the three groups.

Macnamara believes practice is less of a driver. “Once you get to the highly skilled groups, practice stops accounting for the difference. Everyone has practised a lot and other factors are at play in determining who goes on to a higher level,” she said. “The factors depend on the skill being learned: in chess it could be intelligence or working memory; in sport it may be how efficiently a person uses oxygen. To complicate matters further, one factor can drive another. Children who enjoy playing the violin, for example, may be happy to practise because they do not see it as a trouble.”

The authors of the 1993 study are unimpressed. Macnamara said it was important for people to understand the limits of practice, though. “Practice makes you better than you were yesterday, most of the time,” she said. “But it might not make you better than your neighhour or the other kid in your violin class.”

【1】What does the underlined word “entrenched” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Rooted.

    B.Advanced.

    C.Changed.

    D.Unconfirmed.

【2】What can we learn about Macnamara’s study?

    A.It convinced Malcolm Gladwell.

    B.It involved violinists and pianists.

C.Its process was similar to the 1993 study.

D.Its result is consistent with the 1993 study.

【3】What does Macnamara find about highly skilled people?

A.Practicing for 11,000 hours is their main driver.

B.They enjoy keeping diaries about their progress.

C.Environmental factors have little relation to their success.

D.More practice makes little difference to their further progress.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.What makes an expert?

    B.Does practice make perfect?

C.The early bird catches the worm

D.Enthusiasm is the key to success

Looking at her worn-out sneakers(运动鞋), Sarah felt embarrassed going to school wearing them

    “What’s the matter, Sarah? Is there something wrong?” her mother Meghan asked;

Sarah, in a high voice, shouted, “I am sick of these shoes! I am no longer wearing these to my school! Do you know how embarrassing it is?”

Meghan was a single mother working in a nearby town café. She explained, “Right now, we’re on a tight budget(预算很紧).I’ll make sure to get you a new pair next month.”

Sarah picked up her schoolbag and walked to school, giving her mother a dissatisfied look.

The school was going to organize a sports competition and Sarah filled out the form for a 100-meter race.

When one of her friends saw this, she asked Sarah if she was certain about running the race. Sarah didn’t understand what her friend meant.

“Dear, if you have a new pair of shoes, then it’s fine. But if you choose to wear the ones you are wearing now, I’m   afraid you will lose the race!”   the friend said, pointing at Sarah’s shoes. Sarah simply nodded and returned   to her classroom without saying anything.

Later that day, on her way home, Sarah realized she hadn’t eaten her lunch, so she stopped at a bus stop to finish it.

When she began eating, she noticed that a child was standing next to her in poor clothes. Sarah knew the kid needed that sandwich that she was eating since the kid stared at her and then at her food.

Sarah handed the sandwich to the child, who ran up to her, excitedly got the sandwich from Sarah’s hand and began eating it. After finishing the sandwich, the child thanked Sarah, saying, “I haven’t had such a:tasty sandwich in a long time. My father is a cleaner in a house down the street and my mother is a patient at a hospital. Oh, and my name is Sam”
