  • 26、The US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at-Hebron High School in Texas. However, when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin(普通话) class, he quickly changed his mind.

“I thought Mandarin would be more beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language. He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends.

While it is a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,” he said.

Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by more than a billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy. “People are looking at China as our next economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing fast,” said Marty Abbott, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We’re seeing it in all parts of the country.”

Abbott estimates that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin throughout the US, in public and private schools. She said the US government has designated(指定) Mandarin as a “critical need” language and provided professional development programs for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language competency for national security(安全) and economic competitiveness,” Abbott said.

At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes established in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for 10 years. It sponsors(赞助) Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning Mandarin.

  • 27、Human beings are not the only ones who communicate. Animals can also use body language to express themselves. Here is a quick look at how some of our animal friends send messages.

Dogs use sounds, body movements, and their tails to communicate. When a dog is happy, its ears will stand up and its eves will be wide open. The dog will start barking, moving its tail, and running around in circles or jumping up and down. A dog that is afraid will lay on its back and close its eves. The dog may also shake, and it will put its tail between its legs. When a dog is angry, it'll try to make itself look as big as possible, with its tail standing straight. Its main body language is showing its teeth and growling.

Elephants also use noises and body language. An elephant's sense of smell is highly developed. An elephant can smell how another elephant is feeling and even tell if it's sick. The elephant's nose, or trunk, is also used to make noises and to welcome other elephants. Different noises have varieties of meanings: they can mean "I'm hungry, or angry, good to see you!" If an elephant spreads its ears, it means "Watch out!" To show friendship, elephants will touch each other with their trunk and stand close to each other, putting their heads together.

Dolphins are social animals. They live in groups and love showing each other their feelings. An angry dolphin will sometimes hit its tail on the surface of the water. The movement and noise let other dolphins know that something is wrong. If a dolphin wants to send a message over a long distance, or if it wants to show how strong it is, it will jump high out of the water and land on its side, making a loud noise. When dolphins are tired and need to rest, they will swim in small groups close to the surface.

  • 28、Social media use has been linked to mental health, especially in teenage girls. But a new study argues that the situation may be more serious than experts think.

The research involved interviews once a year from 2013 to 2015 with almost 10, 000 children between the ages of 13 and 16 in England. They would report how many times a week they used social media on average. Based on the results, researchers would lean how dependent they were on the social media. Researchers noted that they did not get how much time those children spent on the websites, which is a limitation of the study.

“Our results suggest that social media itself doesn't cause harm, but that frequent use may subvert activities that have a positive influence on mental health such as sleeping and exercising. And then it will increase exposure (接触) of young people to harmful content, particularly the negative experience of cyber - bullying (网络欺凌),” study co - author Russell Viner said in a statement. Researchers found that social media may harm girls' mental health. However, for boys, the influence on their mental health seems to be due to other reasons, so further research is needed.

In 2014 and 2015, researchers asked about the teens' psychological sufferings and their personal happiness. The researchers found that, in both sexes, very frequent social media use was connected with greater psychological sufferings. The effect was especially clear among girls. The more often they checked social media, the greater their psychological sufferings would be.

Bob Patton, a psychologist from the University of Surrey, said the research showed strategies focusing only on reducing social media use as a tool to improve mental health might not help. “Building strategies to increase resilience (适应力) to cyber - bullying and improve the sleep and exercise behaviors may help reduce both physical and psychological harm,” Patton, who was not involved in the research, said in a statement. “If teenagers can change their unhealthy lifestyle and cyber - bullying can be reduced, the positive effects of social media use can be supported,” he added.

【1】What do we know about the research in Paragraph 2?

A.Over 10, 000 teenagers took part in the research

  • 29、Raised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in severe weather. If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”

The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening.

It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached the stop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.

A row of hedge (树篱) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.

On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.

I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”

【1】What does the underlined word “grumbled” in Paragraph 1 probably mean .

    A.accepted happily

    B.explained clearly

A.the tiredness after long hours in labs

B.the fear of seeing something moving

D.the loneliness of riding the bus home

【3】The author’s father watched behind the hedge because ______.

A.he was concerned about his son’s safety

B.he wanted to help his son build up courage

C.he didn’t want to meet his son at the doorway

D.he didn’t think his son was old enough to walk alone

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text

    A.My Father’s Secret

    B.The Life of My father

    C.Terrible Journey Home

    D.Riding Bus Alone

NEW YORK (Reuters) — U.S. factories shrugged off weakness in the global economy in November as manufacturing activity rose to its highest level in five months, a fresh sign the 1 economy was accelerating.

Recent data on consumer spending and private-sector job creation has also boosted optimism on the pace of growth.

“The economy seems finally to be 2real momentum,” said Ian Shepherdson, an economist at High Frequency Economics in Valhalla, New York.

Also pointing to growth, automakers reported U.S. sales rose 13.9 percent in November from a year earlier, Autodata Corp said.

The Institute for Supply Management said on Thursday its index of national factory activity rose to 52.7 from 50.8 the month before, beating analysts’ expectations and showing the sector continues to 3.

The added momentum, also apparent in the report’s details, reduces the chances the U.S. economy will slip into a new recession, even with an expected contraction in the euro zone.

Compared to a dismal first half of the year, the pace of U.S. growth more than 4in the third quarter to a 2 percent 5 rate. While that remains subpar, economists believe activity will 6 even stronger in the final three months of the year.

The ISM 7 of new orders rose to its highest level since April, and the export index also improved, although modestly.

“That should keep some momentum going,” said Sean Incremona, an economist at 4Cast in New York. “It is good to see things are not getting worse now.”

Much of the 8 of the world, however, is getting worse, especially in Europe where policy-makers are fighting a raging sovereign debt crisis.

  • 32、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

When Is the Mona Lisa Not the Mona Lisa?

How many Mona Lisa paintings do you think there are in the world today? Just the one? I don't think so. The truth is that there are probably many, many Mona Lisa's hanging on walls or in studios. Of course only one was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci but the art of copying is very common in the art world.

In fact it is true to say that artists have been copying from other artists for hundreds if not thousands of years. Traditionally, it was normal for artists to copy other artists' paintings. This was a way of making sure historical, religious and artistic traditions were available for future generations. It was considered normal for an artist in training to practise by copying the work of other great artists.

Historically, the purpose of art was for historical or religious reference. Most of the time no one cared who painted the paintings. This is why we find it difficult to identify the artists behind some of the greatest older paintings. Paintings were usually commissioned by the church or state, not b/ individuals so the name of the artist was really unimportant.

However, from around the 16th century the church and state became poorer and money found its way into the hands of rich individuals. These individuals, as a means of showing their place in society or a knowledge of art, drastically increased the demand for art. Suddenly more and more artists were needed and people competed to buy the paintings of certain individual artists. These created people whose job it was to buy and sell paintings. It also created galleries and auction houses. Suddenly art was a business and at its centre was money.
