二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.

By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last. Nicholas did the only thing he could — He huddled (蜷缩)in his cave and slept.

On Monday, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. The next day, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived (his snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode (一集节目)of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

【4】Why did Nicholas leave a very deep impression on Grylls?

A.Because he did the right things in the dangerous situation.

B.Because he watched Grylls' TV program regularly.

C.Because he created some lips tor survival.

    D.Because he was very hard-working.

  • 27、It was a large fish market northwest of Mumbai. Shark fins were sent onto tables. Tens of millions of sharks are killed for the fin trade every year, and a quarter of the world’s sharks, rays, and ghost sharks are in danger. The international trade in many species is not allowed, but it can be nearly impossible for wildlife officials to tell whether the fins here are from protected species.

The samples could be sent to n lab for DNA testing, but the test would take a full day.   But Shaili Johri, a post doctoral biology researcher at San Diego State University, had a handheld device, or tool, that can say what species a part belongs to in a short time, using only a small tissue (组织) sample. The gene sequencing (基因序列测定) done by the MinION device, which she was testing out at the fish market, is a promising new tool to help fight the illegal shark fin trade.

Johri with another author recently published a study in the journal Scientific Reports explaining the first use of the new device for keeping sharks and other wild animals safe from attacks. The smartphone-sized device is made by UK-based Oxford Nanopore Technologies. It has been used for the recognition of Ebola virus, among others. It is also likely to help prevent wildlife crime.

It requires a small tissue sample and a laptop. It can tell a species in three or four hours. But it has one downside the tool costs $1,000, including two original cartridges (测试盒). Every following sequencing cartridge, which can do 12 samples at once, costs an extra $500. That’s roughly $42 per sample. The traditional DNA analysis method costs as little as $5 a sample.

Hollie Booth, a sharks and rays advisor, says the MinION could have lots of practical uses, including controlling wildlife trade across countries or illegal fishing in markets. And the possibilities of this device aren’t just limited to sharks. These tools could be used to recognize elephant ivory, pangolin scales, and various other wildlife.

【1】What did Johri use the MinION for at the fish market?

    A.Collecting tissue from endangered fish.

    B.Discovering sharks’ gene sequences.

C.Recognizing the species of a shark.

    D.Saving sharks losing their fins.

【2】What does the new study mainly tell us about the MinION?

A.How it can help reduce wildlife crime.

B.Its use for wildlife protection purposes.

C.How it was developed by a UK company.

D.Its influence on different scientific fields.

【3】What is a disadvantage of the MinION?

    A.It makes mistakes at times.

    B.It requires more time.

    C.It is hard to use.

    D.It is expensive.

【4】What does Booth probably think of the MinION?

A.It will save many kinds of animals.

B.It should be used after further research.

    C.It must make technological improvements.

D.It needs more support from wildlife officials.

  • 28、Children often visit museums. Then do field trips (实地考察旅行) help students with learning?

Teachers might not see the value of art-related museum field trips. 【1】 He and his research team are studying how attending cultural events can help with a student’s education.

【2】 For this study, his team looked at 11,000 students. Students who visited an art museum were more tolerant (宽容的) and more empathetic (有同理心的). Besides, they learned a lot of content about the art they saw and developed stronger critical thinking skills about art.

Greene’s team also examined how going to a live theater performance can affect students. 【3】 It found that students who saw a live performance experienced improvement in tolerance and empathy. A different group of students watched a movie version (版本) of the same play. The students who saw the live performance learned the story and related vocabulary better than those who watched the movie version. Therefore, there are differences between in-person cultural experiences and digital ones. In-person cultural experiences are very important to the success at school. 【4】

【5】 Apart from their usual field trips, the museums also offer STEM-based tours. STEM-stands for science, technology, engineering and math. These tours look at connections between art and science, art and math, and art and architecture.

A.This is true for students of all ages.

B.This is where Jay Greene comes in.

C.Great importance is attached to field trips.

D.This study involved (涉及) two groups of students.

E.Some museums are looking for ways to provide new programs for schools.

F.Greene’s team wanted to learn how a trip to an art museum affects a student.

G.Though the number is relatively small, the results of the study are convincing (令人信服的).

  • 29、The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the 73-year-old novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah for his descriptions of the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate of the refugees.

Growing up in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, Gurnah was forced to leave for England as a refugee in the late 1960s. At the age of 21, he began to write in English. He was Professor of English and Post colonial Literature at the University of Kent, Canterbury, until his recent retirement this year.

Gurnah is the second black African author to have won the award after Wole Soyinka in 1986. He has published 10 novels and a number of short stories. The theme of the refugee's sufferings runs through his works. His 1994 novel Paradise, which told the story of a boy growing up in Tanzania in the early 20th century, won the Booker Prize and marked his breakthrough as a novelist. And his most recent work Afterlives takes place during the German colonization of Africa. His novels open our eyes to a culturally different East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.

Gurnah said his award would mean that issues such as the refugee crisis and colonialism, which he had experienced, would be “discussed”. “These are things that are with us every day. People are dying; people are being hurt around the world—we must handle these issues” he said, “The world is much more violent than it was in the 1960s, so there is now greater pressure on the counties that are safe. They unavoidably attract more people.”

In an interview in 2016, when asked if he would call himself an “author of postcolonial and/ or word literature”, Gurnah replied, “I would not use any of those words. I wouldn’t call myself a something writer of any kind. In fact, I am not sure that I would call myself anything apart from my name.”

【1】Which is the important factor for Abdulrazak Gurnah to win the prize?

    A.His excellent writing skill.

    B.His ting the colonialism truth.

    C.His extraordinary novel Paradise.

D.His deep love for his homeland.

【2】What do we know about Abdulrazak Gurnah?

    B.He regards himself as a world-famous author.

C.He is the first black author to win the Nobel Prize.
