  • 27、For nearly ten years, I have spent my Monday evenings attending rehearsals for my amateur choir (合唱队). By the end of the rehearsal, I usually feel energized. The singing does me good. So do the people.【1】 We exchange brief chats, smiles and jokes — but that is enough for me to come away feeling a little better about the world.

There is no choir practice now. I miss it. In lockdown, I do not feel short on emotional support, but I do feel short of friendly faces and casual conversations. 【2】

In 1973, Mark Granovetter, a sociology professor at Stanford University, published a paper entitled “The Strength of Weak Ties.” Until then, scholars had assumed that an individual’s well-being depended mainly on the quality of their relationships with their close friends and family. Granovetter showed that quantity mattered, too. 【3】 His central insight was that weak ties are more important to us than strong ones. As Granovetter pointed out, we depend on acquaintances (相识的人) whom we see infrequently to bring us news of opportunities.

This was the idea behind Jobs’s building. It has a large central hall through which employees from different departments have to pass several times a day. Jobs wanted colleagues to bump into each other and chat. He believed in the power of these seemingly random conversations to fire up creativity.

【4】 Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, investigated the extent to which people get happiness from weak-tie relationships. She found that on days when a person had a greater number of casual interactions with weak ties — say, a neighbor, a member of yoga class — they experienced more happiness and a greater sense of belonging.

For these reasons, we should continue to find ways to cultivate weak-tie relationships, during lockdown and beyond. 【5】 The goal is to let others know that you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time, energy or attention.

A.Another way of putting this is that I miss my “weak ties”.

B.“Strong ties” and “weak ties” play different roles in people life.

C.Encounters with weak ties can be good for our mental well-being, too.

D.I consider them as my close friends to talk with and share my feelings.

E.He categorized a person’s social world as “strong ties” and “weak ties”.

F.With a few exceptions, I would not describe my fellow choir members as close friends.

G.Sandstrom adds that we can also engage in more weak-tie-style interactions with our strong ties.

  • 28、Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home. Dad has a jade green comb. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say: “Help Daddy clean it, OK?” At age five this task brought me such joy. I would excitedly turn the tap on, and then brush the comb with a used toothbrush as hard as I could. Satisfied with my job, I would proudly return it to Dad. He would smile at me, and place the comb on top of his wallet.

About two years later, Dad left his job and started his own business. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well, and our stable life started getting shaky. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did, it was always late and I’d already be in bed. I started to get mad. Why didn’t he listen to Mum and just stick to his old job? Over the years, I stopped spending my nights with him.

Now 28, I’ve already got a job. Dad’s business has also started to be on track. Things are better. Yet the uncomfortable silence between us persisted.

Two days before my birthday last year, Dad came home early. As I helped him carry his bags into his study, he said. “Hey, would you like to help me clean my comb? It’s been a while: since I last cleaned it.” I looked at him a while, then took the comb and headed to the sink.

As I cleaned the comb, it hit me then: why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. That routine meant my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and I. It meant he would watch TV with us or playa few videogames with me. It meant a happy and loving family.

I pass the clean comb back to Dad. He looks at it and smiles. But this time, I notice something different. My dad has aged. He has wrinkles next to his eyes when he smiles, yet his smile is still heartwarming. The smile of a father who just wants a good life for his family.

Dad carefully places his comb on top of his wallet. The same old jade green comb. I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad.

【1】As a child, how did the author feel about cleaning the comb?

A.She did it in a casual way.

    B.She took it seriously.

    C.She thought it burdensome.

D.She understood the significance of it.

【2】Why was the author unhappy with her father’s quitting his job?

A.Her routine with her father changed.

B.Her father grew indifferent to mum and her.

C.Her father’s new business was not doing well.

D.Her mother was disappointed with his decisions.

【3】What’s the turning point of the author’s attitude?

A.The boom of her father’s new business.

B.The return of the former sweet happy nights

C.The realization of her father’s unchanged love.

D.The awareness of her father’s aging appearance.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、DirectionsComplete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Like AIDS, flu is caused by a virus, a tiny packet of genes in a protein coat so simple that most biologists don’t 1 viruses truly “alive” until they invade(入侵)a host cell. Then they hijack the cell and use its energy to 2 out 100,000 to 1 million copies of themselves in just 10 hours. Eventually they become so great in number that they 3 the cell from within, flooding out to further infect the body. They are spread from respiratory(呼吸的)passages, through the cough and sneeze droplets on doorknobs, desktops, coat sleeves and food tables.

The cause of flu was unknown for many years—the virus wasn’t isolated until 1933. But now we know what makes flu such an annual irritant, and so 4 deadly, is that like HIV that causes AIDS, it is moving 5. Made of RNA instead of the more stable DNA, it changes like a movie monster, making vaccinations(疫苗接种)useless in a year or so.

One thing we know about the flu is that we can’t predict it. In part that’s because occasionally the flu will change completely in what is called a “shift” and 6 humans by such a surprise that a pandemic(流行疾病)breaks out. An estimated three to six shifts occurred in the 18th century, four in the 19th, and three in the 20th, the 1918 pandemic, the 1957 Asian flu and the 1968 Hong Kong flue. Because it can take six to nine months to make enough of an effective vaccine, a deadly shift that 7 around the world is what gives health authorities nightmares.

But there is a global network to try to stop such a pandemic in its tracks. More than 80 countries and 121 U.S. cities belong to a reporting system to 8 flu.

And now, doctors know what causes flu. They have decades of experience with vaccines to fight it, and they even have anti-viral drugs, though those are expensive and of limited 9.
