  • 26、Exercise helps to keep us in good health. Doctors at the American Heart Association suggest getting at least 150 minutes of proper physical activity every week. Many people exercise for a few minutes every day or every other day. So, getting 150 minutes every week is easy.

But what about those times when you are sick? If you do not feel well, should you keep following your exercise habit? Following are the answers from health experts.

Edward R. Laskowski is a doctor at the Mayo Clinic. He and other experts have a general rule about exercising when you are sick. It is usually fine to exercise properly (not hard), he explains, if your symptoms are all “above the neck”. These signs may include a runny nose, sneezing or a sore throat.

Geralyn Coopersmith, a physical fitness trainer who has written several books on exercise offers similar advice. However, both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest taking a break from exercising if signs of your illness appears “below the neck”. Pay special attention to symptoms such as chest congestion, bad cough or pain in the stomach.

There are other symptoms that can tell you to avoid exercise. They include a higher than normal body temperature, a sense of feeling very tired, and widespread muscle pain.

Both Coopersmith and Dr. Laskowski suggest listening to your body. If you feel really bad, take a break and let your body rest. If you don’t feel too bad, these experts both suggest cutting down the amount of exercise. For example, if you usually run, take a quick walk instead.

【1】How long should people do exercise according to doctors?

A.No less than two and a half hours a week.

B.One hundred and fifty minutes each day.

C.At least a few minutes every day.

D.About 150 minutes every other day.

【2】People with symptoms “below the neck” are advised to ______.

    A.stop exercise

    B.walk instead of run

    C.ignore the symptoms

    D.do less exercise

【3】What does the underlined part “listening to your body” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Taking good care of yourself.

C.Making decisions according to your physical condition.

D.Listening to music when exercising to keep healthy.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

  • 27、Improved air quality to reduce ozone (臭氧) pollution may have avoided the loss of 1.5 billion birds during the past 40 years, a study found. That’s nearly 20% of bird life in the United States today.

Ozone, a gas that appears in nature, is also produced by human activities, including by power plants and cars. The ozone in the upper atmosphere protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays (紫外线) of the sun. But ground-level ozone is harmful and pollutes the air we breathe.

To examine the relationship between bird populations and air pollution, the researchers used models that connected bird observations from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird program with ground-level pollution data. They tracked monthly changes in bird populations, air quality, and regulation status (治理现状) for 3,214 US counties over a period of 15 years. The findings suggest that ozone pollution is most harmful to the small birds — such as sparrows, warblers and finches — that make up 86% of all North American land-bird species. Ozone pollution directly harms birds by damaging their breathing systems, and indirectly harms their food sources.

“Not only can ozone cause direct physical damage to birds, but it also can harm plant health and reduce numbers of the insects that birds eat,” said co-author Amanda Rodewald. “Not surprisingly, birds that cannot get high-quality habitat or food resources are less likely to survive or reproduce successfully. The good news here is that environmental policies intended to protect human health and return important benefits to birds too.”

This work contributes to our ever increasing understanding of the connection of environmental health and human health.

【1】How many birds are there in the United States now?

    A.0.75 billion.

    B.1.5 billion.

    C.3 billion.

    D.7.5 billion.

【2】What is the result of the findings?

A.Ozone pollution harms birds’ food sources indirectly.

B.86% of North American land-bird species are extinct.

C.3,214 counties in America have effective regulations.

D.The researchers have observed birds for many years.

【3】What is Amanda Rodewald’s attitude towards birds’ future in the US?

    A.Worried.

    B.Positive.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】What is the suitable title for the text?

A.Ground-Level Ozone Makes up Most of the Air We Breathe

B.Environmental Policies Intend to Protect Human Health

C.Reduced Ozone Pollution May Have Avoided Bird Deaths

D.Regulations Bring Important Protection Benefits to Birds

  • 28、Spring is just around the corner, but if you are tired of sunflowers, tulips (郁金香) and other standard gardens, why not head to one of these mysterious and wonderful botanical gardens?

    Butchart Gardens, British Columbia, Canada

One of the rarest flowers you’ll find at Butchart Gardens is the Meconopsis, otherwise known as the Tibetan blue poppy. The most impressive flowers can be found in the borders, where you’ll find over one million bedding plants. And although the gardens are famous for their perennials (多年生植物), 300,000 spring-flowering plants are grown every year, and over 900 varieties of plants are grown for the summer gardens alone.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of a handful of botanic gardens to grow only native plants. Some of the most popular varieties include the king protea, which produces enormous flowers between autumn and summer, and the rare silver tree, a silky-leaved plant, which experts believe could become extinct in the next 50 years.

    Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado, US

Once native to South Africa, these oddly-named flowers are famously drought-hardy, making them perfect for this part of North America. This garden is one of the few to focus on draught-tolerant plants from Colorado and the grasslands of Africa, Mongolia and Argentina. In fact, Colorado is home to nine species of endangered plant, and several can be found here.

    Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden, Tromso, Norway

Visit the world’s northernmost botanical garden and you’ll find a breathtaking collection of plants from the world’s polar and mountainous regions including, in the Himalaya section, the rare giant Tibetan blue poppy, with its huge flowers and metre-high stem. You’ll also see the Wilander buttercup, which can only be found in the quite terrible areas of Svalbard’s unforgiving icy islands.

  • 29、As a young child, I was painfully shy. I’d watch other children play in the park, wishing I could join them, but I was too scared to approach. Eventually, my mother would come to the rescue. She’d ask the other kids if I could play, too. Today, I feel comfortable giving public lectures in large halls and having conversations in small groups, but I still tend to avoid situations in which I’m expected to spend time with a roomful of strangers.

There could be many reasons. For one thing, I might be carrying some childhood fear of rejection. But beyond that possibility, one likely element is that I tend to underestimate how much people like me after I meet them, as most of us do.

A new research paper reports that the common concern that new people may not like us, or that they may not enjoy our company, is largely unfounded.

Erica Boothby of Cornell University and her colleagues conducted a series of studies to find out what our conversation partners really think of us. In doing so, they discovered a new cognitive illusion (认知错觉) they call “the liking gap”: our failure to realize how much strangers appreciate our company after a bit of conversation.

The researchers observed the gap in a variety of situations: strangers getting acquainted in the research laboratory, first-year college students getting to know their dormitory mates over the course of many months, and community members meeting fellow participants in personal development workshops. In each circumstance, people consistently underestimated how much others liked them. For much of the academic year, as dormitory mates got to know each other and even started to develop enduring friendships, the liking gap persisted.

The data also revealed some of the potential reasons for the illusion: we are often more severe with ourselves than with others, and our inner critic prevents us from appreciating how positively other people evaluate us. Not knowing what our conversation partners really think of us, we use our own thoughts as a proxy (代理人). This is a mistake, because our thoughts tend to be more negative than reality.

【1】Why does the author mention his childhood experience?

A.To show how his character changed.

B.To explain what he was like when he was young.

C.To show an example of why people are shy of communication.

D.To emphasize the important role of a mother in one’s childhood.

【2】What does the underlined word “unfounded” probably mean?

    A.Careless.

    B.Baseless.

    C.Selfless.

    D.Meaningless.

【3】What do we know about the liking gap from the text?

A.It indicates what strangers really think of us.

B.It begins and ends quickly among strangers.

C.It disappears when strangers get to know each other.

D.It states our misunderstanding of how much others like us.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for this text?

A.People Like You More than You Know

B.How to Get Along Well with Strangers

C.The Way to Know What Others Think of Us

D.Having Conversations with Strangers Benefits Us
