26、 There are many interesting science experiments out there for young kids. You can surprise your friends and teachers with them. All you have to do is to put a little effort into it and you should have no problem coming up with an interesting science experiment. One such experiment is to show your friends and teachers that you can make mothballs (樟脑丸) dance!
If you want to do it, first, be sure that you have got all the necessary science kits for your science experiment.
What you need for this experiment is a glass filled half full with water. Add a little bit of vinegar (醋) to your glass of water, about 1/3 or 1/4 of a cup (60 ml), and one teaspoon (10 ml) of baking soda, and then carefully stir the mixture. Drop a few mothballs into the glass and have your audience watch. As long as the surfaces of the mothballs become fairly rough, they should begin to bounce up and down in the glass.
You can also do a similar experiment with raisins (葡萄干) and pop, such as Coca Cola. In this experiment, all you have to do is to fill a glass with Coca Cola and drop a few raisins into it. The raisins should begin to bounce up and down in the glass of Coca Cola. You can also replace the raisins with mothballs and you should get the same effect in the Coca Cola. This project works because the irregular surfaces of the mothballs and the raisins hold some C02 bubbles (气泡) , causing them to bounce up and down in a dancing motion.

27、Computer keyboards are the most widely used input devices (设备). Most of us use them almost every day, at work or at home. But have you ever wondered who invented them and why they look like this?
The origins (起源) of keyboards can be found in the first typing devices created back in the 1700s and 1800s. The first patent (专利权) for a typing machine belonged to the Englishman Henry Mill, back in 1714. Since then, many other typing devices have been patented, but none of them was put to use until 1867.
The first typing machine produced for use was the Remington typewriter, created by Sholes & Glidden. Are you wondering what it looked like? Surprisingly, it was very similar to an old sewing machine (缝纫机). This typewriter model is usually considered as "the first typewriter”.
Since this invention, typing devices went through a lot of changes in shapes, size, design and technology, increasing their efficiency (效率) and becoming more user-friendly.
In 1961, IBM made the first model of its Selectric typewriter public. This device had a very great influence on modern computer keyboards in terms of efficiency and typing speed.
Throughout the 1950s to 1970s, typewriters became the primary input devices used for computing. Things started to change in the 1970s, when the first computer keyboards made their appearance and typewriters were taken over by these new devices.
In the 1980s, IBM introduced its first personal computer, which came equipped with the Model M keyboard. This is considered the most universal keyboard design and the father of modern keyboards. This device was a big success and it’s still very popular today.

28、 According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall.
The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can to get away with and often leave it to female family members.
Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 old Americans concluded that gender (性别) is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents.
In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care. Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross-section of over 50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.
"Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother."
"This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters."
In the UK, the 2011 Census (人口普查) showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.
But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts (同事) who are not carers.
【1】According to the finding of the research, from which of the following families will the old probably enjoyed the best care?
A.The parents with two sons.
B.The parents with one daughter.
C.The parents with two daughters.
D.The parents with one daughter and one son.
【2】How did the researchers come to the conclusion?
A.By giving out some questionnaires.
B.By tracking some of the American families.
C.By doing some research on a nursing home.
D.By analyzing some of the American family networks.
【3】What can we know from the passage?
A.Angelina led the study of Health and Retirement Study.
B.Angelina analyzed various data and researches to get the finding.
C.Caring responsibilities are a heavy burden to most Americans.
D.Most male families will not take on the responsibility of looking after the old.
【4】What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.Many care providers work longer hours than others.
B.People should give up their job to care for the elderly.
C.People shouldn't pass on caring responsibilities to others.
D.Many care providers might have potential health problems.
29、The oldest and most common source of renewable energy known to man, biomass(生物质) is one of the most important forms energy production in the United States and elsewhere. Since such a wide variety of biomass materials is everywhere —- from trees and grasses to agricultural and city —- life wastes —-biomass promises to play a continuing role in providing power and heat for millions of people around the world.
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists(UCS), biomass is a kind of renewable energy source that produces no carbon dioxide(二氧化碳), because the energy it contains comes from the sun. When plant matter is burned, it gives off the sun’s energy. In this way, biomass serves as a sort of natural battery(电池) for storing the sun’s energy. As long as biomass is produced continuously —-with only as much grown as is used— the “battery” lasts forever.
According to the Energy Information Administration, biomass has been one of the leading renewable energy sources in the United States for several years running through 2007, making up between 0.5 and 0.9 percent of the nation’s total electricity supply. In 2008—-although the numbers aren’t all in yet—-wind power probably took over first place because of the rapid development of wind farms across the country.
Producing power from biomass helps reduce some 11 million tons of carbon dioxide each year. Some homeowners also try to make their own heat by using biomass materials. Such practice may save homeowner’s money, but it also produces a lot of pollution. So, the best way is to encourage power plants to use it.
【1】 Why is biomass considered as “ a sort of natural battery”?
A. It burns merely plant matter.
B. It keeps producing electricity.
C. It stores the energy from the sun.
D. It produces zero carbon dioxide
【2】 We learn from the text that in 2008 ______.
A. Wind power would be the leader of renewable energy.
B. there was a rapid growth of electricity production
C. biomass might become the main energy source
D. 0.5~0.9 of power supply came from biomass
【3】 Why does the author encourage power plants to use biomass?
A. To prevent the waste of energy.
B. To increase production safety.
C. To reduce pollution.
D. To save money.
【4】 Where does the text probably come from?
A. A research plan. B. A science magazine
C. A book review. D. A business report.
