26、As the pandemic separates us from loved ones, many of us are trying to stay connected through texting, email, and social media, even taking the opportunity to reconnect with long-lost friends.
But if our goal is to feel closer to people and enjoy our conversations more, we’d better pick up the phone, according to a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
In the study, participants (参与者)imagined having a conversation with a friend they hadn't been in touch with for at least two years and made predictions (预测) about how it would feel to connect by phone versus(对比)email. "We think it's going to be awkward to talk to somebody, but that just turns out not to be the case," says lead author Amit Kumar. "Instead... people form stronger connection when they're talking on the phone than when communicating over email. ”
The same result held true when the researchers had participants do a conversation exercise with strangers using either video chatting, audio(声音的),only chatting, or text-chatting. People who used media that included the voice had more satisfying exchanges and felt closer to their new friends than the text-chatters.
Why? Likely it's because our voices communicate a variety of emotions, helping others to read us better and to feel like they really know us. Hearing someone's voice helps understand each other better —in some cases, even better than video chatting.
So, while texting can be useful, it's not the best way to get the most out of socializing. If we're looking for greater happiness and connection, we should give someone a call.
【1】What do the underlined words “the case” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Stronger connection is possible.

A.They can talk more quickly.
B.Voices show more emotions.

D.They are more familiar with voice.
【3】How do researchers get the study result?
A.By quoting experts' words.
B.By telling stories.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By introducing theories.
【4】What is considered the best way to connect with someone?
A.Text chatting.
B.Sending emails.
C.Making calls.

27、Is running a marathon (马拉松) under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Now, the world record for the 42.195km (26.219 miles) distance is held by the Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge. His time of 2:01:39 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2018.
But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we may have to wait longer for this to happen.
To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition (营养). Today’s perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated (占优势) long distance races for years. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen (氧). Training at high altitudes (海拔) gives them a strong heart. Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark. An extremely fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London.
Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.
On the other side, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of some medicine.

A.To show a human can run very fast.
B.To prove Eliud Kipchoge is the best.
C.To introduce the greatest success in the world.
D.To show an under two hour marathon hasn’t been achieved yet.
【2】Why is it difficult to see a time of around 1:57?
A.It requires too many things to fit together.
B.It isn’t easy to find right running plans.
C.Training a perfect runner takes a long time.
D.Kenyan and Ethiopian runners control marathons.
【3】Which of the following may be important for an under two-hour marathon?
A.High altitudes.
B.Lots of oxygen.
C.A perfect environment.
D.Tall and strong runners.
【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Men will run faster and faster.
B.Men made the greatest progress in 1930.
C.Achieving shorter time became more difficult.
D.It’s impossible to break the marathon world record.
28、 Google is getting further into the business of saving lives. Today, it announced that users of its Android phones in New Zealand and Greece will receive warnings of earthquakes about to strike their locations. And those earthquakes will be detected(探测) not by the usual seismometers(地震仪),but by the phones themselves.
Earthquakes are a well-known threat in both countries, but neither has an operational warning system. That created an opportunity to make a difference, says Marc, the project's lead engineer.
Traditional warning systems use seismometers to detect an earthquake's size, then send a warning, by smartphone or loudspeakers, to residents. These systems are powerful but they are expensive to develop. An earthquake warning system that can do without this expense and depend on smartphones has great potential (潜力)globally, says Meier, who studies earthquake warning systems. “If you can do it with just the phones, that's a shortcut.”
Android phones have been publicly detecting earthquakes since last year. It can remove false(假的)alarms like the shaking caused by the sound of thunderstorms. So far, Android phones have detected more than 1000 quakes worldwide. And the alerts have performed well in terms of speed when compared with Shake Alert and Japan's warning system, Allen says. The phones also detected a quake that originated just north of Samos, a Greek island close to Turkey, in late October 2020. “We could really show that, if we had alerting in place, we would have provided alerts in Greece,” Allen says.
【1】The underlined word “shortcut” in Paragraph 3 most probably means “________。”
A.a way that is shorter than the usual one
B.a path that is direct towards the destination
C.a quicker way than usual to achieve something
D.a means of ordering a computer to perform a function
【2】What's the disadvantage of traditional warning systems?
A.They are costly.
B.They are 'powerless.
C.They have little potential.
D.They feel the quake slowly.
【3】What's Allen's attitude to detecting quakes by the phones?
A.Negative.
B.Positive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uncaring.
【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

B.Phone Warning Systems Are Powerful
C.Earthquakes Are A Well-known Threat

29、About 30 years ago, I left Cuba for the United States with my son. After getting settled finally in Brunswick, New Jersey, I enrolled(注册) my son in kindergarten. Several weeks later, my son’s teacher asked me to meet him at his office.
In the teacher’s office, an exchange of greetings was followed by his questions: “Is your son mentally retarded(弱智的)? Does he suffer from any kind of mental disability?”
Was he talking about my wonderful Scola? No, no, it can’t be. What a helpless, lonely moment! I told him that Scola was a quiet, sweet little boy, instead. I asked him why he was asking me all these questions.
My son could not follow the teacher’s directions, he told me, and thus, Scola was disrupting the class. Didn’t he know my son did not speak English yet?
He was angry: “Why hasn’t your son been taught to speak English? Don’t you speak English at home?”
No, I didn’t speak English at home, I replied. I was sure my son would learn English in a couple of months, and I didn’t want him to forget his native language. Well, wrong answer! What kind of person would not speak English to her son at home and at all times? “Are you one of those people who come to this country to save dollars and send them back to their country, never wanting to be a part of this society?”
Needless to say, I tried to tell him I was not one of “those people.” Then he told me the meeting was over, and I left.
As I had expected, my son learned to speak English fluently before the school year was over. He went on to graduate from college and got a job, earning close to six figures. He travels widely and leads a well-adjusted, contented life. And he has benefited from being bilingual(双语的).
Speaking more than one language allows people to communicate with others; it teaches people about other cultures and other places — something very basic and obviously lacking in the “educator” I met in New Jersey.
