二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster.

One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.

After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the kitchen to find something to eat: Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening, and Maggie hugged herself in fear.

After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve(阀门) was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.

Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was then almost unrecognizable. Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.

While placing her feet firmly on the floor, Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconscious onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She was happy that she was still alive!

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.A story of a girl in an earthquake.

B.The importance of preparing for an earthquake.

  • 27、Two years ago, New Jersey became the first state in the U. S. to use learning standards requiring teachers to teach kids about climate change across grade levels and subjects. The standards, which went into effect this fall, introduce students as young as kindergartners to the subject, not just in science class but in the arts, world languages, social studies and physical education.

Climate change has not been completely taught in U.S. schools, largely because of the partisanship (党派分歧) about climate change and many teachers’ limited knowledge about the science behind it. That started to change in 2013, with the publishing of new national science standards, which asked science teachers to introduce students to climate change and its human causes starting in middle school. Still, only 20 states have used the standards. A 2020 report from the National Center for Science Education found that many states that didn’t follow the new guidance weren’t explicit in their standards about the human causes of climate change, and a few even taught wrong ideas about its causes and degree of seriousness. Meanwhile, discussion of climate change outside of science class remains rare (稀少的), educators and experts say.

New Jersey is trying to change that, but it’s not a simple task. Like teachers around the country, educators here are tired after years of COVID-19 disturbance, and, as elsewhere, some schools face serious teacher shortages. On top of this, many educators don’t feel prepared to teach climate change: A 2021 survey of 164 New Jersey teachers found that many had not enough confidence in their knowledge of the subject, and some held wrong ideas about it, confusing the problem with other environmental issues such as plastic pollution.

A more pressing concern is that the lessons are being given unequally across the state. Schools in rich towns tend to have more time and resources to introduce new standards; schools in poorer places that are often the most vulnerable (脆弱的) to climate disasters may lack the resources to do so.

【1】Which is a reason for the incomplete teaching of climate change in U. S. schools before 2013?

    A.The shortage of science teachers.

B.The reduction of the science classes.

C.The different opinions on climate change.

    D.The poor teaching equipment.

【2】What does the underlined word “explicit” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Clear.

    B.Active.

    C.Interested.

    D.Confident.

【3】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.The state of education in New Jersey.

    B.Difficulties in teaching climate change.

C.Working conditions of New Jersey teachers.

D.Effects of COVID-19 on New Jersey education.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

    A.New National Science Standards 2020

B.Discussion of Climate Change at School

C.Teaching Climate Change in Different Subjects

D.A Report of the National Center for Science Education

  • 28、Strangers Under the Same Roof

Does every dinner with your parents seem to turn into an argument? Have your once warm and open conversations become cold and guarded? Do you feel that you just cannot see eye to eye with them on anything? You are not alone. Heated arguments and cold silences are common between teenagers and their parents.

Teenagers' physical changes may result in such family tensions. You may feel anxious that you are developing at a different rate to your friends, shooting up in height or getting left far behind. You might worry about your changing voice, weight problems or spots(粉刺).When it all gets too much, your parents are often the first targets of your anger.

It can be a big headache to balance your developing mental needs too. You enter a strange middle ground --- no longer a small child but not quite an adult. You have both a new desire for independence and a continued need for your parents' love and support. You feel ready to be more responsible and make decisions on your own. Unfortunately, your parents do not always agree and that makes you feel unhappy. "Why can't they just let me go?" you may wonder. On the other hand, when you are struggling to control your feelings, you wish they could be more caring and patient---sometimes they forget that growing up is a rough ride. It can be difficult when your parents treat you like a child but expect you to act like an adult. All of this can lead to a breakdown in your relationship.

Although sometimes it may seem impossible to get along as a family, you can take action to improve the situation. The key to keeping the peace is regular and honest communication. When you disagree with your parents, take a minute to calm down and try to understand the situation from their point of view. Perhaps they have experienced something similar and do not want you to go through the same pain. After you have thought it through, explain your actions and feelings calmly, listen carefully, and address their concerns. Through this kind of healthy discussion, you will lean when to back down and when to ask your parents to relax their control.

Just remember that it is completely a common thing to struggle with the stress that parent child tensions create, and that you and your parents can work together to improve your relationship. The good news is that this stormy period will not last. Everything will turn out all right in the end, and the changes and challenges of your teenage years will prepare you for adulthood.

【1】The first paragraph is mainly introducing ___________.

A.the importance of close family relationships

B.the quarrels between teenagers and their parents

C.the wall of trust between parents and their teenagers

D.the common conversations between parents and children

【2】What mainly causes the teenagers family tensions according to the author?

    A.Their parents' attitude towards them.

B.Parents' strict control over their teenagers.

C.Parents' expectation on their children's development.

D.Teenagers' physical changes and their mental needs.

【3】What would the author agree according to the passage?

A.Parents should let go of the control over their teenagers.

B.Teenagers should always follow their parents' points of view.

C.Parents and teenagers should always keep open conversations.

D.Teenagers should not depend on their parents' love and support.

【4】The author thinks the stress that family tensions cause is ___________.

    A.normal

    B.terrible

    C.avoidable

    D.natural

  • 29、As our cell phones get smarter, smaller and faster, and enable users to connect at high speeds to the Internet, an obvious question arises: is the mobile handset into the next computer? In one sense, it already has.

Today’s most complicated mobile phones have the processing power of a mid-1990s PC while using 100 times less electricity. And more and more of today’s mobile phones have computer-like features, allowing their owners to send e-mails, browse(浏览)the Web and even take photos? 84 million mobile phones with digital cameras were shipped last year. We ask the question whether mobile phones will ever overshadow or replace the PC, and the issue suddenly becomes questionable. PC supporters say mobile phones are too small and connect too slowly to the Internet to become effective at tasks now performed on the large screens and keyboards of today’s computer. Fans of the mobile phones respond: just wait. Coming techniques will solve the limitation of the mobile phone. “One day, two or three billion people will have cell phones, and they are not going to have PCs,” says one inventor of the smart phone and the chief technology officer of an important smart phone company. “The mobile phone will become their digital life.”

The inventor’s a newest product, the shiny, slim pocket-size cell phone, has a tiny keyboard, a built-in digital camera and narrow openings for added memory. The smart phone market makes up only five percent of overall mobile phone sales today, but the figure has been doubling each year. In the United States, it’s the business crowd that’s primarily buying these handsets. “What makes the smart phone so much better than the computer is that it’s always with you, always up and always ready,” says one of them, who works in an 80-member law firm, which recently started giving its lawyers smart phones instead of laptops.

1What’s the author’s attitude toward whether the mobile phone can be turned into the next computer to some extent?

    A. Indifferent.   B. Disapproving.

    C. Supportive.   D. Negative.

2PC supporters believe that   in the future.

    A. computers will work more effectively at tasks

    B. computers will perform better with large screens and keyboards

    C. mobile phones will be too small to be compared with computers

    D. mobile phones will not replace the computer

3Fans of the mobile phones think   in the future.

    A. they have no choice but to wait to see what happens

    B. the limitations of the mobile phone will be solved by new techniques

    C. two or three billion people will have cell phones

    D. the mobile phone will become their digital life

4In the third paragraph, the underlined word “figure” refers to   .

    A. the inventor’s newest product, the shiny, slim pocket-size cell phone

    B. two or three billion people who are not going to have PCs

    C. 84 million mobile phones with digital cameras

    D. the five percent of the total mobile phone’s market share
