二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、There are glistening and groaning icebergs, playful Adélie, emperor penguins, sunbathing Weddell seals, and spouting sperm whales(抹香鲸)in Antarctica which is the coldest, windiest, driest continent on earth and for many travelers, the final frontier. Today more opportunities than ever are open for tourists to check Antarctica off their bucket lists. But to do that, you have to have the right equipment.

Most journeys to Antarctica are on scientific research ships that also transport tourists. Unlike a traditional cruise(航行), however, you won’t need fancy formal wear for the dining room. Dress on board is casual and above all else, keep safety in mind. Ships typically ban any footwear that’s open-toed or high-heeled, but your tuxedo T-shirt will be just fine for a penguin theme night. The most surprising thing you probably won’t need to pack for Antarctica is a coat. Most cruise operators provide one as part of your package, both for the branding opportunity and for safety reasons. It’s easier to find boatloads of guests on shore journeys when everyone is dressed alike.

Before you step foot on the southernmost continent, you’ll have to brave the Drake Passage. Those who make the crossing frequently will tell you that it’s referred to as the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake“, depending on the swell of the sea. If it’s the former, you’ll want to be prepared with seasickness medicine.

As you approach your first landing, the ship’s crew will check your outdoor wear and camera equipment like tripods for any tiny stowaways. Everything will be examined, vacuumed(抽真空), and brushed to remove foreign particle like dirt and seeds in order to protect Antarctica’s environment.

A waterproof backpack is useful for keeping your camera equipment dry, and your phone secure and handy for quick photos. The extreme cold will drain the batteries in your electronic devices faster than usual, so bring extras and keep them in an inner coat pocket to benefit from your body heat until you need them.

Double-check your luggage and keep the above in mind before you depart.

【1】Which of the following meets the dressing requirement for passengers heading for Antarctica?

    A.Wearing flat-heeled and closed-toed shoes.

    B.Carrying warm coats for replacement.

C.Wearing a formal suit for dinner.

    D.Preparing coats in bright colors.

【2】What can be implied about the Drake Passage?

A.It’s the most difficult passage worldwide.

B.It’s the most famous tourist spot in Antarctica.

C.Crossing it can bring travelers physical discomfort.

D.Asking others for advice will make it less dangerous.

【3】What should tourists bear in mind before going to Antarctica according to Paragraph 4?

    A.Learning about its environment.

    B.Avoiding bringing dirt from there.

C.Carrying as much photographic equipment as possible.

D.Bringing no foreign seeds with them.

【4】What does the underlined word “drain” in the fifth paragraph mean?

    A.Freeze

    B.Consume.

    C.Activate.

    D.Change.

  • 27、How to be a more responsible person?

Responsibility doesn’t come at birth. It is something that is acquired as you age, go to school and progress in life. However, you can hear and see a lot of different things, both good and bad. 【1】 That’s why your sense of responsibility depends only on you. All of it depends on your own decision. Here are a few tips on how to improve your sense of responsibility.

【2】 If you make a mistake, admit it. Instead of making excuses, give the true reason why you failed. By coming up with an excuse, you actually admit to being irresponsible.

Stop complaining. Complainers are usually those who talk too much and do nothing. By always complaining about the world around you, you actually fill yourself with negativity. 【3】 Therefore, stop complaining!

Overcome postponement. The first step to success is to stop putting things off. Postponement will lead you nowhere. You’re responsible for your own future, so stop delaying now and start taking action on what truly matters. 【4】

Be consistent and stick to your schedule. Having a routine is good. 【5】 Try to wake up at the same time every day. Even on weekends, you could get up earlier instead of staying in bed until noon. This will give you some consistency. Plus, getting up early allows you to have more time for whatever you have to finish that day. Additionally, you should set a schedule for your work and personal tasks, and stick to it.

    A.Actions speak louder than words.

    B.Stop making excuses for yourself.

C.By being negative, you are suffering terribly.

D.You choose your own behavior, actions and words.

E.It means order and means you are on the right track.

F.The hours you wasted could have been used for better things.

G.Even though you never complain, you are obviously exhausted.

  • 28、   I first began experiencing anxiety and depression at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first anxiety and depression would come and go, it eventually became a constant part of my life.

I was so eager to find the solution to overcoming my anxiety and depression that I tried everything from when I was in college to graduate school: mood-changing medication, special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Despite this, I still felt I hadn't even come close to managing the problem.

But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine I was reading that talked about how dogs were able to help people with anxiety and depression. The very next day, I decided to get a dog — a corgi. When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home, I didn't realize how much he would change my life. It didn't happen right away, however.

Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my anxiety and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feelings again. I didn't want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and gave up. That was when I saw Buddy.

Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, “There's no time to be sad; the world is amazing!”

And for the first time in my life, on a day when my anxiety and depression were strong, I got out of bed. I put on my winter clothes and went for a walk in the snow with my new friend. I realized at that moment, walking down the street in winter, my life was changing. I really was a new girl.

Sure, I still have days when I feel down or anxious. But with Buddy by my side, I've finally learned how to manage these feelings and emotions.

【1】According to the first two paragraphs, the author________.

A.has been a school bully for years

    B.suffered from depression since college

C.tried many ways to fight depression but nothing worked

D.felt less depressed after taking medication and doing yoga

【2】How did the author know having a dog might help with her depression?

A.She read it in an article by chance.

B.A doctor recommended it to her.

C.She heard it from some other depression sufferers.

D.She found out herself after spending some time with a corgi.

【3】How does the author feel in the last paragraph?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Anxious.

    C.Confused.

    D.Doubtful.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Puppy excitement

    B.Keeping a dog benefits us a lot

    C.Getting rid of anxiety

    D.Defeating depression with Buddy

  • 29、What’s the use of language? Why does the human race learn to speak, write, and sign? 【1】 Certainly the primary purpose of language is for communication. We use language to communicate our ideas and opinions to each other. We use it to tell others our thoughts. Sometimes we tell the truth. Sometimes we tell lies. But in all these cases, the basic aim is clear: to get the ideas in our head into someone else’s head. 【2】 But there are several other uses of language where the basic aim has nothing to do with communicating ideas.

【3】 Earlier in the book, I talked about accents and dialects. These tell people who we are and where we come from. In both ways we express our identities.

Here’s another use of language: to express our emotions. Imagine you’re hammering a nail into a piece of wood, but something goes wrong and you hit your finger instead. What will come out of your mouth? 【4】 But quite a few would shout, “Stupid hammer!” as if it was the hammer’s fault. What sort of language is this? The hammer doesn’t have a brain, so it can’t possibly understand us. So what are we doing? Actually, we just want to get rid of our nervous energy. By shouting at the hammer, we feel a bit better.

We also use language to avoid embarrassment and get on with other people. Imagine people sometimes say such things as “Looks like rain” or “Lovely day” when they meet each other. They don’t want to start a proper conversation, but they feel it would be rude to pass by in silence. 【5】

A.Therefore, they make a comment on the weather.

B.One of these uses of language is to express identity.

C.Of course, if you’re very brave you might not say anything.

D.It shows that we’re getting on well with the people we’re talking to.

E.And for that to happen, we must speak them, write them, or sign them.

F.We might think the answer is very simple: to communicate with each other.

G.Rather a large number of people, I suspect, would shout out something bad.
