二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   A primary school in County Cork, Ireland, has decided to do away with all homework for the entire month of December, replacing it instead with acts of kindness.

For the third year in a row, students at Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Uí Choileáin will not have any homework for the month of December. Instead, they are being asked to undertake acts of kindness for friends, family and the community — and to record these in a special “Kindness Diary” which each student will fill in daily and then get signed by their parents.

“Building on the overwhelming success and positivity of last year’s Gratitude Diaries, when children and their families documented the small things they were grateful for in their lives, this year they are asked to undertake little acts of kindness that could make a big difference in somebody’s life,” Vice Principal Íde Ní Mhuirí said.

The school suggests doing something nice for an elderly neighbor, or performing an act of kindness for a relative or friend who may be feeling lonely, but the act can be anything as long as it brightens someone’s day.

Alongside this Kindness Diary initiative (倡议), there will be a kindness bucket in school, where the children can place kind observations about their peers which will boost the self-respect of those around them. Each Friday morning at the gathering a random selection of these observations will be shared to stress how small acts and kind words can make huge differences in somebody’s life. And finally, each class will put their heads together and come up with a class-wide project which can help the community.

“In this world, consumed by social media, where our young people are constantly experiencing pressure, there is no better way to show them the way forward in the world than by practicing kindness,” Íde Ní Mhuirí said.

D.To give them a sense of pride and importance.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Homework or Acts of Kindness?

B.How to Make a Big Difference in Life?

  • 27、“I see.” Those were the two words on the note. Kevin found it on his bed at Camp Wall-A-Way. It was tucked (塞) just under his blanket, so he couldn't miss it.

The past few days — during his first time here — had been great! But this note changed everything.

Kevin looked around quickly. Joey, the nosy (爱打听闲事的) kid from yesterday, seemed to be busy reading a letter from home. A couple of kids were fooling around near the door. No one in the cabin seemed to be paying any attention to him. No one seemed to be waiting to see a surprised look.

What did the note mean? Who had written it? Was it from someone he knew from home? He couldn't even consider it. It would be too much to find out his secret had followed him here to camp.

He decided to hope for the best. He would pretend everything was fine. Maybe there would be no more notes. Maybe this one meant something else.

For two days Kevin acted as if he was having a great time. He played handball with the kids from his cabin. He learned to paddle a canoe (划独木舟). He offered to help in the kitchen. He got picked for the baseball team. Catcher! Everybody seemed friendly. Nothing seemed out of order. After a while, Kevin even thought that he didn't have to act like he was having a good time. He was having a good time.

Then the third day he came into the cabin after swim practice. Another camper was sitting on his bed. He had a piece of paper in his hand.

【1】How did Kevin feel when he first saw the note?

    A.Sad.

    B.Angry.

    C.Stupid.

    D.Worried.

【2】What did Kevin find after looking around?

    A.Joey was a nosy boy.

B.The kids were as busy as usual.

    C.Nobody seemed interested in him.

D.Somebody seemed to know his secret.

【3】How did Kevin act during the first two days after the note was found?

    A.He was at a loss.

    B.He led an active life.

    C.He pretended to be friendly.

D.He tried to find out who wrote the note.

【4】What is the role of the last paragraph?

A.To teach the reader a lesson.

B.To give the reader a surprise.

C.To add to the story's mystery.

D.To make the story sound true.

  • 28、Elephant Transit Home

In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).

Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).

A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.

At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.

The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

1What does the underlined word “nurture” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Set free. B.Care for.

    C.Focus on. D.Relate to.

2What do we know about the ETH?

A.It receives about $125,000 each year. B.It is the largest animal protection site.

C.It helps to keep baby elephants safe. D.It changes elephants’ habitats for the better.

3The workers reduce human connection with the elephants to ___________.

A.train them to stay away from hunters B.provide them with more living space

C.study them better in a natural environment D.help them make it in the wild as a herd

4What’s the purpose of the passage?

B.To explain the threat baby elephants face.

C.To introduce an animal protection project.

D.To persuade the readers to protect elephants.

  • 29、   I was born with vision (视力) problem, and over the years, my eyesight gradually worsened. Once I was in the first year of my PHD, I was almost 100% blind.

Though I am blind, my great passion is climbing regardless of many challenges.

I started climbing when I was young. My dad took me up my first rock route when I was two. He taught me everything he knew and I led my first route outside when I was 11. At that time I had about 20% vision, unable to pick out the routes from the ground.

I met my wife Molly at a climbing club. We didn’t climb together very much because we normally led those who hadn’t done as much as we had. We were just friends at first, but eventually romance (浪漫) arose.

In fact, I proposed (求婚) to her in 2017 on a climbing trip to Greenland. It was my most difficult trip, camping in temperatures below -200C. I didn’t have diamond ring at that time.

In the end I went down on one knee with a special ring made by myself. She said yes, but then I fell down and somehow dropped the ring. So it’s still there!

It’s quite possible that I wouldn’t be a good climber if I weren’t blind—if I didn’t have these challenges. It wouldn’t focus me. That determination is built through my disability.

1How was the author’s eyesight when he led his first route?

A.It began to recover. B.He had about 40% vision.

C.He was almost l00% blind. D.He had about 20% vision.

2Who made the author love climbing?

    A.His mother. B.His wife. C.His father. D.His best friend.

3Which of the following best describes the author as a climber?

    A.Determined. B.Demanding. C.Humorous. D.Selfless.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Hard Work Pays off B.Misfortune Might Be a Blessing

C.A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed D.Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Jenny was very nervous. She had a swimming competition in the morning and could not sleep. She tossed and turned all night. She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Jenny was very athletic and was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. She even won a soccer championship with her teammates last year. But this particular swimming competition was important. She had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let her teammates down.

When her alarm went off at 6: 00 am, she hit the snooze button and rolled onto her side, wishing she could just stay in bed all day. Having slept so poorly, Jenny was not at all ready for the day. After a few minutes, she stretched her arms above her head and yawned before throwing her covers back and climbing out of bed.

She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though she got butterflies in her stomach. Jenny’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”

“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Jenny replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.

Jenny’s mom sensed her daughter’s worry and gave her a comforting pat on the back. “You’ll be great, dear. Just do your best. That’s all that matters.”

Jenny felt a bit of relief and appreciated her mother’s kind words. But by the time she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held, that feeling of comfort had disappeared. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition.
