二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When I woke up on Aug.4, 2016, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts raced through my brain in the closet. I didn't want to come off as trying too hard, but I also didn't want to be seen as a lazy and untidy person. Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state. First impressions are everything, and it was important for me to impress the people who I would spend the next four years with.

This was my third time being a new kid. But this time was different because my dad promised that I would start and finish high school in the same place. This time mattered, and that made me nervous.

After meticulously searching my closet, I proudly came out in a dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the ruffled shoulders added a bit of fun. Yes, this outfit was the one. An hour later, I felt powerful as I headed toward Room 1136. But as I entered, my jaw dropped to the floor.

Sitting at her desk was Mrs. Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing exactly the same dress as me. I kept my head down and tiptoed to my seat. I made it through my minute introduction speech until she stood up, jokingly adding that she liked my style. Although this was the moment I had been afraid of from the moment I walked in, all my anxiety surprisingly melted away, and the students paid attention as I shared my story. My smile grew as I laughed with the students. After class, I stayed behind and talked to Mrs. Hutfilz, relieved to make a humorous and real connection.

Looking back four years later, the ten minutes I spent afraid of giving my speech were really not worth it. My first period of high school certainly made the day unforgettable in the best way and taught me that Mrs. Hutfilz had an awesome sense of style!

  • 27、Waiting in line happens to everyone. Waiting may reflect how much a person values his/her time. But does that a person is willing to wait in line really mean he/she doesn’t value his/her time? Not necessarily. Some lines are unavoidable in places such as the doctor’s office, some lines are annoying (the drugstore), and some are appealing and worthwhile (your favorite restaurant). For businesses, the long waiting time can frustrate customers, but it can also enhance the reputation of a shop-especially if that shop is a restaurant.

These two different qualities of lines have led shops to adopt different approaches to dealing with them. For shops where customers are not happy in line, distraction is very useful. Retailers often do this by offering entertainment such as music or a screen to watch. And now that customers have mobile phones, free Wi-fi can make waiting in line, because of flight delays, for example, more tolerable. There’s also the traditional way of reducing the pain of lines: temporarily increasing cashiers during busy times.

Long lines aren’t always unproductive: Having to wait for a product increases its appeal. Behavioral science professor Ayelet Fishbach’s research found that waiting for something increases its value, and that this increase can cause people to be more patient. In other words, it makes something “worth waiting for”. Restaurants that don’t take reservations have made “waiting culture” a signal of quality, and customers end up valuing their food more than their time. This value, as a part of the reputation, is very important to some businesses.

As for the question of whether waiting in line is worth it, it comes down to each person’s idea about whether a product or service is worth the wait. Economists complain about the inefficiency of waiting in line. They come up with wildly innovative solutions that no one will think fair-such as Steven Landsburg’s proposal to let new arrivals be at the front of the line instead of the back to reduce the waiting time and the line size (people at the back would give up and leave).

【1】What can we know about long lines from Paragraph 1?

    A.They reflect some people’s personalities.

B.They consume much of people’s willpower.

C.They show people’s sense of time well.

D.They are double-edged swords for businesses.

【2】Why do retailers offer entertainment and free Wi-fi to customers?

    A.To advertise their shops.

    B.To promote online sales.

C.To take customers’ minds off the wait.

D.To encourage customers to be sociable.

【3】What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?

    A.The benefits of long lines.

    B.The features of “waiting culture”.

    C.The secrets of successful businesses.

D.The findings of Ayelet Fishbach’s study.

【4】What does the author think of Steven Landsburg’s proposal?

    A.It is a smart solution.

    B.It is an unfair practice.

C.It is hard to carry out.

D.It wins favor with most economists.

  • 28、The Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport announced that the capital will build 20 cycle tracks connecting popular tourist sites and another 20 linking the countryside. Also, all roads that are wider than 12 meters must have cycle lanes (车道).

It is good of the city’s transport department to care for cyclists. Cycling is, without doubt, one of the greenest ways of traveling. It uses no gas, there are no carbon emissions (碳排放), and it also helps the cyclists become strong and reduce fat.

That’s why, in this age of automobiles, bicycles have suddenly become a popular means of transport. Today people ride cycles not for shortage of other means of transport, but for their own health. Data show that over 100 million people ride bicycles as a kind of sport.

However, to encourage more people to choose this green means of transport, good bicycle lanes are a necessity. Anybody with any cycling experience must have come across the following problems at some point of time; that there might be no cycle lanes beyond a certain point, or that the signs for cyclists might become unclear; worst of all, there might be whole rows of cars parked on the bicycle lanes or cyclists might have to compete with cars on the same lane.

The law prevents parking on bicycle lanes, but some car owners couldn’t care less. The law gives cyclists right of passage over automobile drivers, but that is often forgotten. With automobiles pushing cyclists to one side of the road, cycling often loses its attraction. Sometimes people prefer cycling on exercise bikes indoors than on the roads.

To make cycling a pleasurable experience, the governments need to do their jobs better. Apart from designing new bicycle lanes, they should also take effective actions to protect the rights of cyclists and make the sport more enjoyable.

【1】Which advantage of cycling is not mentioned in this passage?

    A.Cycling can help lose weight.

    B.Cycling is environment-friendly.

C.Cycling can help build up bodies.

    D.Cycling can reduce heavy traffic.

【2】Why are good bicycle lanes necessary?

A.To call on more people to ride bikes.

B.To prevent parking on bicycle lanes.

C.To compete with cars on the same lane.

D.To encourage people to cycle on exercise bikes.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to building cycle tracks in Beijing?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Unclear.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Cycling, new workout trend

B.No more parking on bicycle lanes

C.Here come the cyclists, make room

D.Cycle tracks to be widened in Beijing

  • 29、   Smokers who give up smoking and live on a diet high in tomatoes and fruits, especially apples, have better chances of repairing their lung function harmed by smoking, a new study finds. The study, published in the December issue of the European Respiratory Journal, said former smokers who ate more tomatoes and fresh fruits regularly saw a slower natural drop in lung function over a 10-year period.

According to the study, conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruits a day had a slower drop in lung function, compared to those who ate less than one tomato or less than one portion of fruits every day.

Lung function starts to drop at around age 30 and poor lung function is related to higher risks of death from all diseases, including heart disease and lung cancer. “A diet rich in fruits can soy down the lung's natural aging process even if you have never smoked,” said Vanessa Garcia Larsen, the study's lead author, who is also an Assistant Professor in Human Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Larsen and her team examined diets and lung function of more than 650 adults from Germany. Norway and Britain in 2002 and performed lung function tests on the same group of participants 10 years later. The researchers found a more eye-catching connection between diets and lung function among former smokers, who had a slower drop over the 10-year period because their diets were highly rich in tomatoes and fruits.

Such result suggests that the nutrients(营养物)in their diets are good for repairing the harm to the lung done by smoking.

【1】What`s the effect of tomatoes and fruits on former smokers?

A.They help smokers repair their lung function.

B.They slow down the aging process little by little.

C.They greatly reduce the risk of serious lung diseases.

D.They make smokers less worried about their health.

【2】What risk is a 35-year-old man of poor lung function likely to have?

    A.The acceleration(加速)of the lung's aging process.

B.The heavy dependence on smoking cigarettes.

C.The danger of dying from serious diseases.

D.The faster natural drop in lung function.

【3】Why were lung function tests performed on the same group 10 years later?

A.To examine if the participants develop the disease.

B.To make the readers believe the result of the study.

C.To see clear signs of a quick drop in lung function.

D.To see changes in lung function of the same person.

【4】What's the main purpose of the text?

A.To introduce two kinds of fruits.

    B.To describe some research work.

C.To tell people the result of a study.

D.To explain the effect of smoking on people.
