二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Each year there is an increasing number of cars on roads and streets as millions of new cars and trucks are produced. One out of every six Americans works at putting together the parts of cars, driving trucks, building roads or filling cars and trucks with gas. Americans won’t live without cars!

Most Americans would find it hard to think what life would look like without cars. However, some have realized the serious problems of the air pollution that is caused by the car. The polluted air becomes poisonous and dangerous to health.

One way to get rid of the polluted air is to build a car that does not pollute. That’s what several of the large car factories have been trying to do. But to build a clean car is easier said than done. Progress in this field has been slow.

Another way is to take the place of the car engine by something else. Inventors are now working on steam cars as well as electric cars. Many makers believe that it will take years to develop a practical model that pleases man.

To prevent the world from being polluted by cars, we’ll have to make some changes in the way many of us live. Americans, for example, are encouraged to travel and go to work by bicycle. Bicycling is thought to help keep the air clean.

But this change does not come easily. A large number of workers may find themselves without jobs if a car factory closes down. Thus the problem of air pollution would become less important than that of unemployment.

Although cars have led us to a better life, they have also brought us new problems.

【1】How many ways to get rid of air pollution are suggested in this article?

    A.Four.

    B.Three.

    C.Two.

    D.One.

【2】If the number of cars is cut down, the most serious problem to American workers is ______.

A.to have no work to do

    B.to keep the air clean

    C.to get a better life

D.to go to work by bike

【3】What is the conclusion (结论) of the writer?

A.Bicycling is the only way out.

B.The number of cars must be cut down.

C.Cars bring us nothing but serious problems.

D.Cars bring us not only a better life but serious problems.

  • 27、"Dad," I say one day, "let's take a trip. Why don't you fly out and meet me?"

My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thought, and his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks.

My father sees me drifting (漂泊) aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure.

He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet four weeks later in Rapid City.

"What is our first stop?" asks my father

    "What time is it?"

    "Still don't have a watch?"

Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite (花岗岩) , his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.

"Unbelievable." he says, "How was this done?"

A film in the information center shows sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture (雕像) and then left the final touches to his son.

We stare up and I ask myself, "Would I ever devote my life to anything?"

I always used to hear my father's complaints about my having no directions or goals. Now I hear it in my own heart.

The next day we' re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.

"Did you ever travel with your dad?" I ask.

"Only once," he says, "I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other—but never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”

The last sentenceit's probably the same thing I'd say about my father. And what I'd want my child to say about me.

In Glacier National Park, my father says, "I've never seen water so blue." I have, in several places of the world. I can keep travelling, but on second thought I realize maybe a regular (稳定的) job won't be as boring as I feared.

Weeks after our trip, I call my father. "The photos from the trip are wonderful." he says. "We have got to take another trip like that sometime."

I tell him I've decided to settle down, and I'm wearing a watch.

【1】We can learn from Paragraph 2 and 3 that the father________.

    A.follows the fashion

    B.gets bored with his job

C.likes the author's collection of stamps

D.is unhappy with the author's lifestyle

【2】What does the author realize at Mount Rushmore?

A.He should have a specific goal in life.

B.He should learn sculpture in the future.

C.His father is as shy as a little boy.

D.His father wants to know more about the sculptor.

【3】From the underlined paragraph, we can see that the author________.

A.hopes to give whatever he can to his father

B.learns how to communicate with his father

C.comes to understand what parental love means

D.wants his children to learn from their grandfather

【4】What could be inferred about the father and son from the end of the story?

A.They decide to take more trips together.

B.They begin to change their attitudes to life.

C.The Swiss watch has drawn them close.

D.The phone call solves their disagreements.

  • 28、This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor. Smart socks, which can teach to dance, may be the answer for_____________.

The socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately(精确地) record not only know far and fast they run but also how well. It means the user maximizes(最大化)theirperformance, and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers(纤维) that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like normal clothes.

Sensorsrecordeach movement and send it by an ankle transmitter (脚踝发射器) to a smart phone. Then a “virtual coach” application shows the information and can tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with feet.

The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers. “People think running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and well,” Dr Davide Vigano said. A recent study showed that between 60 and 80percent of runners got hurt per year. This is pretty much more than any other human activity. Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance, play sports such golf, or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.

Mr. Vigano said, “People could all benefit from the idea. We have had interest from all sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf. Anything where you have to use your feet can use it. It could even be put in high heels to help women walk in them safely.”

Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and boots. The socks, anklet and software package, are expected to be sold for around 120, which will go onsalein March.

1What does the underlined part “anyone with two left feet” refer to?

    A. People who are disabled.

    B. People who invented the socks.

    C. People who are not good at dancing.

    D. People who are interested in dancing.

2What’s special about fibers that the socks are made of ?

    A. They can monitor the movement of feet.

    B. They feel much softer than normal clothes.

    C. They are expensive to produce.

    D. They act as a smart phone for users.

    3According to Dr Vigano, _____

    A. 60 to 80percent of runners would like to buy the smart socks.

    B. users can run as fast as they like with the socks.

    C. everyone can make good use of the smart socks.

    D. no runners will get hurt, thanks to the socks.

As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, saying, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled.
