二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Have you ever left a cinema shaking your head after seeing a film with an ending that you could see coming from ten kilometres away? Most of us have. A film can have many stars and beautiful locations, but if the screenplay is poor, it’s unlikely that it will be a hit with audiences.

Being a screenwriter can be a profitable career and there is no shortage of candidates for the job. However, although the major studios receive thousands of scripts every year, only a few make it to the silver screen. The studios have very set ideas about what makes a good screenplay and if a script doesn’t match them, it hasn’t got a chance.

The art of screenwriting is greatly influenced by Poetics, the book on the theory of literature written by Aristotle in about 350 B.C. Aristotle proposed that a storyline should consist of three parts: a beginning in which we meet the characters and the place where the action occurs, a middle in which a problem that has to be overcome is introduced and finally an end, where the problem, at least in Hollywood films, is solved. It may surprise you to discover that the ancient Greek philosopher’s ideas should have so much influence on such a modern art form. It will surprise you even more to learn that his ideas are more popular than ever.

In the seventies, Hollywood scriptwriter, Syd Field, discovered that films that followed Aristotle’s plan did much better at the box office than those that didn’t. Field studied the most successful films and came up with a more rigorous version of Aristotle’s theory. The beginning of the film should last no longer than half an hour, at the end of which a turning point must occur. Field even suggested that the perfect moment for this turning point is the twenty-seventh minute! Then, for the following sixty minutes the main character is involved in facing the challenge that has been set. At the midpoint of this period, the writer may introduce another turning point which must be a reversal in the character’s fortunes. The final quarter of the film is for the climax of the story, as the character fights to achieve their aims.

Does it sound familiar? It should do, because virtually all Hollywood films follow this scheme. So the next time you accuse a film of being unoriginal, you’ll know who to blame!

【1】If a script________, it has a greater chance to be chosen by studios.

    A.is written by a well-known screenwriter

B.matches the audience’s set idea of a good story

C.agrees with studios’ standards of a good screenplay

D.is considered to be a good screenplay by the public

【2】In the book Poetics, what did Aristotle proposed about a storyline?

A.The setting should be revealed in the beginning.

B.A problem has to be introduced in the beginning.

C.The solution doesn’t necessarily appear in the end.

D.More time should be devoted to the end than to the middle.

【3】The word “rigorous” (in paragraph 4) is closest in meaning to________.

    A.modern and relaxed

    B.thorough and strict

    C.simple but efficient

    D.complex but understandable

【4】Which of the following questions has been answered in the passage?

A.Why many Hollywood films look similar to each other.

B.How a storyline can be improved based on Aristotle’s theory.

C.What kinds of Hollywood films appeals more to the audience.

D.Who should be to blame for the decline of the quality of films.

  • 27、While famous foreign architects(建筑师)are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.

Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in international architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.

Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.

The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique(独一无二的) view.

Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).

Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.

Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said.

"Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said.

"Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are, " said Wang.

The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.

【1】Wang Shu won the Pritzker Architecture Prize________.

    A.In 1995

    B.in 2005

    C.in 2012

    D.in 2021

【2】What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?

    A.Its hilly environment.

    B.Its large size.

    C.Its unique style.

    D.Its diverse functions(功能多样化).

    【3】What made Wang’s architectural design a success?

    A.The mixture(混合) of different shapes.

B.The balance of East and West.

    C.The use of popular techniques.

D.The harmony(和谐) of old and new.

【4】What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?

    A.Spread (传播)them to the world.

    B.Preserve(保存) them at museums.

    C.Teach them in universities.

    D.Recreate (再创造)them in practice.

  • 28、Imagine being told that you will never walk again! That was what doctors told the world-famous gymnast (体操运动员) Kieran Behan after they removed a cancerous tumor (肿瘤) from his leg when he was only ten years old. The operation went so badly that he woke up crying in terrible pain. Up to then, he had been crazy about gymnastics and was determined to become an Olympic champion. But how could he do that when he could not even walk now and was sitting in a wheelchair?

Kieran was going to show them and he started on the long road to recovery. He was 15 months in a wheelchair but he kept on exercising and was back in the gym. But within a few months he fell from the high bar and suffered a serious head injury, which caused frequent blackouts. Thus, he missed a whole year at school but the gym was beckoning (召唤) again. This time though, he had to overcome the challenges of that awful injury and getting back his balance. He returned to school using a walking stick but was cruelly laughed at by his classmates.

It took him three years to get back to where he had been before he injured his head. But unfortunately, he then suffered more injuries. Even just after he had been chosen for the European Championships, his knee was broken. Behan has said that was when he was about to give up.

But he never gave up and finally succeeded in becoming the Challenge World Cup floor champion in 2011, and his greatest moment of honor was when he attended the London 2012 Olympics. He had become an Olympic athlete after being through such sufferings. He is really a glorious example of the Olympic spirit.

【1】What can we infer about Kieran Behan in the first paragraph?

  • 29、An earthquake hit Turkey and Syria last month. Over 40,000 people lost their lives in the natural disaster, and that number is expected to climb. But people are staying strong and holding out hope as rescuers continue to search for and rescue survivors.

33-year-old Necla Camuz was trapped inside her home with her 10-day-old son, Yagiz, in her arms. She waited for 90 hours before being rescued. While Camuz was worried that they would never be found, she looked to her baby as a source of strength. “I think if my son hadn’t been strong enough to deal with this, I wouldn’t have been, either,” she shared. This story had an even happier ending. Camuz was told that her husband and 3-year-old son had also survived. They would get together after this terrible experience.

But babies and young people aren’t the only survivors. 77-year-old Fatma Gungor was trapped for 212 hours before being freed. “I am so excited. I don’t know what to say. We almost got to the point of giving up, but our struggle has ended well,” one rescuer said. Finding Gungor provides new motivation (动力) for rescuers, who have been working around the clock. They are encouraged to keep up their search.

According to Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, it’s uncommon to find survivors after they have been trapped for more than 100 hours, but low temperatures might be the factor. “On the one hand, the cold weather makes the rescue very difficult, for it is below freezing right now. On the other hand, it may reduce the demand for water. Perhaps that is the case this time,” he said.

As always, these stories give hope that there are many people still waiting to be rescued. But once people are pulled from the stones, there is a hard road ahead as people have lost their homes, and many have also lost their families. If you are looking for a way to help, consider donating to Global Giving’s earthquake fund.

【1】How did Camuz live through the earthquake in her opinion?

    A.By using professional skills.

B.By seeing her newborn baby’s survival.

C.By having trust in her family.

D.By finding some water and food.

【2】What do the rescuers realize after saving Gungor?

    A.More people can be rescued.

B.Old people have a stronger will.

C.Rescuers have to be calm enough.

D.Rescue work will become more difficult.

【3】What do Dr. Sanjay Gupia’s words suggest about the cold weather?

A.It is unusual for local people.

B.It can be both harmful and favorable.

C.It makes rescuers easier to save trapped people.

D.It causes trapped people to reduce demand for food.

【4】What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To call on people to offer support to those suffering.

B.To give some tips on surviving an earthquake.

C.To point out the problems facing rescuers.

D.To stress the importance of timely rescue.

  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a cold March day in High Point, North Carolina, with temperatures staying around 15℃. The girls on the Wesleyan Academy Softball were waiting for their next turns during practice, stamping their feet to stay warm. Eighth-grader Taylor watched her teammate Paris play. The two didn’t know each other well — Taylor had just moved to town a month or so before.

Paris was the queen of the softball court, with super skills of playing softball and strong leadership — almost all the players respected and followed her. Seemingly, Taylor’s coming challenged the current situation as Taylor was the team captain of her former school. So sometimes Paris just led the team to win the match, leaving Taylor behind on the bench.

The girls were training hard. Emma tried her best to make a good throw, which might seem foreign to someone just starting to learn the game. Anna kept her arm over her shoulder when she was throwing the softball. Suddenly, Paris fell to the ground and started shaking, with her eyes rolling back. Taylor realized it was an emergency.

It certainly was. Paris had suffered a sudden heart failure. Without immediate medical care, Paris would die. “ Does anyone know CPR? ”

CPR is a life-saving skill. To do CPR, you press on the sick person’s chest so that blood moves through the body and takes oxygen to organs. Without oxygen the brain is damaging quickly.

Amazingly, Taylor had just taken a CPR course the day before. Still, she hesitated. She didn’t think she knew it well enough. Looking around, she found no one step forward. They all were at a loss what to do. Taylor was scared, too. But she knew it was the difference between life and death.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Taylor got up the courage and ran to do CPR for Paris.
