二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、It was a hot summer day, and I became thirsty. The sun was right above our heads, and my thirst became unbearable. My mouth was completely dry. We could see a village at the bottom of the mountain — four hours away, according to the smuggler. After a few minutes, however, we got to a small lake. The water was yellow and covered with algae, but the smuggler drank it and brought me a cup of water to drink. As I looked into the cup, I was reminded of the solution that we prepared in biology class in order to grow bacteria. This was the main source of water for the village. Who knows what microorganisms were swimming in that lake.

“I wouldn’t drink it if I were you,” my aunt said. But I closed my eyes and drank the whole cup at once. I would worry about the consequences later.

We reached the village just before sunset. After eating dinner and resting for several hours, we started to travel again. The night journey was magnificent. The sky was clear, the moon was full, and millions of stars seemed to be twinkling at the night travelers. We could hear the bells of another car a van coming from the opposite direction, getting louder and louder as it got close. The ding-a-ling of that caravan added a rhythm to the lonely desert.

Now we were on the land of the Freedom Fighters. We knew if they recognized the smuggler, they would kill all of us as spies. The Freedom Fighters and the Millitia are enemies to each other, and the Freedom Fighters did not trust anyone who was traveling with an agent.

At dawn we reached a small teahouse, where we had some tea and bread. We walked on, and soon a signpost got my attention. As I got closer, I was able to read the words: Welcome to Pakistan I started to cry, walking backwards to get one last glimpse of my beloved country.

【1】The author hesitated to drink the water, because ________

A.it was prepared for biology class

    B.It was bitter to drink

C.only the villagers could drink it

D.the ding-a-ling was an alarm warning danger to them

【3】The author walked backwards because ________

A.he hated to leave his motherland

B.he didn’t want to go to Pakistan

C.he was too tired to walk forwards

D.He returned to where he was born

  • 27、A Love Note to My Mum

When I was a little girl, you always modelled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood the role that modelling plays in your life. Little did I know you were saving every penny you made to go to law school.

I cannot thank you enough for what you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were focusing on reading law books. I was confused. Why were you doing what I do – memorising textbooks and studying for tests? When you said you were in law school, I was even more surprised. I didn’t know mums could be lawyers, too. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”

As young as I was, those words kept ringing in my ears. I watched as you faced the challenges of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a model and a mum of five kids. You never complained and gave up. With your words of wisdom in my mind, I suddenly felt the freedom to dream. My whole world opened up. I set out to live my life filled with hope, seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional success.

Your words became my motto (座右铭). As I grew up, I always found myself in the unique position of being either the first or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained power every time I said, “Yes, I’ll try that.”

Encouraged by your words, I have forged ahead (毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes or to meet challenges. You did it, and now I’m doing it. Sorry, I have got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to realise.

  • 28、   Any snakebite can be dangerous if infection sets in. some types of snake poison make the bite area swollen(肿胀的) or painful. Others cause bleeding or damage the heart’s nerves. Here are some especially dangerous snakes:

The largest of all poisonous snakes, king cobras can reach 5.5 meters in length. Each king cobra bits contains enough poison to kill an elephant -- or 20 people. But these big snakes usually avoid people. They live throughout India, southern China and Southeast Asia.

A bite from Australia’s inland taipan, the world’s most poisonous snake, releases enough poison to kill 100 men. The good news is that people rarely come in contact with this snake, and a treatment for its poison exists.

Though short, the common Indian krait packs a powerful punch(攻击) in its bite. Most often, it strikes people at night while they are sleeping. Since the bite causes little pain, victims are often not sure that they have been bitten until they begin to experience stomach cramps(痉挛). Without treatment, symptoms will worsen quickly and can lead to death.

The black mamba, a native of Africa, is actually olive or grey in color. Only the inside of its mouth is black. • 29、US Space Agency Returns to Mars with InSight Lander

The American space agency's lander InSight is to arrive on Mars at the end of November,2018. Unlike NASA's Curiosity rover, InSight will not move across the planet's surface. Instead it will become the first spacecraft (航天器) used only for exploring underground. It will study the geography of Mars, searching for signs of Martian (火星的) quakes.

InSight is a project of U.S. and Europe. It is 6 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. It weighs 360kilograms. InSight's 1 .8 -meter robotic arm will put two experiments in place. Both are designed toexplore underground of Mars to learn about the inside.

Bruce Banerdt is the lead scientist for InSight. He viewed the spacecraft as a robot that can take care of itself. "It's got its own brain. It's got an arm. It can listen and feel things. It pulls its own power out of the sun," he noted.

Thomas Zurbuchen, one of the heads in NASA, said the results of the InSight project could "change the way we think about the inside of our earth. " But, first, InSight will have to land on Mars undamaged. Since Mars exploration started in the 1960s, only about 40 percent of the explorations have succeeded.

Tom Hoffman is InSight's project manager. He said earlier successes do not lessen the concerns for each new exploration. "That we ve done it before doesn't mean we' re not nervous and excited about doing it again," he said.

InSight will enter the Martian atmosphere (大气层) traveling at 19,800 kilometers an hour. It will slow for landing on a wide flat area on Mars. If all goes well, InSight could carry out its experiments in about 10 weeks. The InSight project is expected to continue for one Martian year, about two years on Earth.

【1】What is the difference between InSight and NASA's Curiosity rover ?

    A.The size.

    B.The design.

    C.The speed.

    D.The task.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

B.InSight is the project of America and Japan.

C.InSight has the functions (功能) of a robot.

D.InSight is mainly powered by the natural gas.

【3】What will be one of the contributions (贡献) of the InSight project according to Zurbuchen?

A.It will help us understand the geography of Mars.

B.It will change the way we think about the inside of the earth.

C.It will help carry out more experiments on Mars.

D.It will get more information about the reasons for Mars quakes.
