  • 27、   A new study suggests that dark makings on the planet Mars represent sand — not water. The research in 2015 suggested that lines on some Martian hills were evidence of water. Yet American scientists now say these lines appear more like dry, flows of sand. If water is present, it is likely to be a small amount. Water in liquid form would be necessary for microbial (微生物的) life.

NASA, the American space agency, said more research is needed. Michael Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration programme. He noted that the latest study does not reject the presence of water. But the admitted, “It just may not be as exciting as the idea of rivers going down the sides of cliffs (悬崖).”

The new findings come from a team led by Colin Dundas of the United States Geological Survey. His team measured 151 of these lines in 10 areas. Most of the lines end with slopes between 28 degrees and 35 degrees. These measurements are similar to active sand dunes (沙丘) on both Mars and Earth. A small covering of dust that moves and sometimes becomes lighter might help explain the markings. They usually appear in the Martian summertime, and then disappear until the next year. If these lines are dry, this suggests that recent Mars has not had large volumes of liquid water. Dundas and his research team say that many questions remain.

“I still think that Mars has a great potential for having had life early on in its history,” Meyer said. “As long as that’s true, we also have a reasonable possibility of life still being on Mars. It just happens to be cryptic or well hidden.”

NASA currently has no robotic vehicle — either on Mars or in development — with the ability to climb steep slopes. The lack of such equipment has engineers coming up with idea like Martian helicopters or planes without pilots.

【1】What do American scientists find on Mars now according to their study?

    A.A lot of little life.

    B.An amount of water.

    C.Some Martin hills.

    D.Dark markings are sand.

【2】When do the markings come out?

    A.In Marian spring

    B.In Martian summer.

    C.In Martian autumn.

    D.In Martian winter.

【3】What’s Meyer’s opinion about having life on Mars?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Trustful.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What does the underlined word “cryptic” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Undiscovered.

    B.Strange.

    C.Magical.

    D.Icy.

  • 28、Liverpool, my hometown, is a unique city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage (遗产) Site.

I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist (薄雾), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history.

As if stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries (美术馆) than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, madding the city a place of wonder.

As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub(酒馆). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself.

Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore.

【1】Visitors who see the city for the first time would be deeply impressed by __________.

    A.its charming banks

    B.its famous museums

    C.its wonderful palaces

    D.its attractive buildings

【2】The third paragraph is developed mainly by __________.

    A.providing different examples

    B.following the order of space

    C.making comparisons

    D.analyzing causes

【3】The author uses the Philharmonic pub to prove that _________.

A.Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants

B.Liverpool is an impressive place full of attraction

C.a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves

D.a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to complete their journey

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The universal value of the world heritage in Liverpool.

B.The exciting experience of the author in Liverpool.

C.The special cultural atmosphere of Liverpool.

D.The beautiful historic sites of Liverpool.

  • 29、When you think of a new place for growing food, you might think of Mars. But one Italian family believes one possible place is right here on the Earth: the ocean.

Nemo’s Garden is the world’s first underwater system of land plants. Located off the coast of Noli, Italy, it consists of several greenhouses called biospheres, each of which is attached to the seafloor. “The aim of it is to change agriculture, and add a possibility for growing produce in the ocean,” says co-founder Luca Gamberini.

His father Sergio Gamberini came up with the idea by combining his two passions — diving and gardening. In 2012, the project began with planting basil (罗勒) underwater. Now Nemo’s Garden is growing strong.

“Our limited number of resources can not promise sustainable (可持续的) development,” Luca says, “and we believe that underwater gives us some advantages over traditional agriculture.”

Floating six to ten meters underwater, plants in Nemo’s Garden are separated from any outside pathogens (病原体). Also, the temperature of the ocean water is an ideal environment for plant life. Besides, Nemo’s Garden uses a technique that uses water-based nutrients (养分) instead of soil. “Also, there is little interaction with the underwater environment and related ecosystems, which means no harm is caused to sea creatures,” adds Luca.

Everything is monitored on land through cameras and sensors, and settings can be adjusted. When it’s time to harvest, a diver will cut the vegetation, place it in bags and float them to the surface.

The team at Nemo’s Garden has plans for even bigger biospheres in the future, as well as other locations. Luca believes the future of Nemo’s Garden will be mostly along the coastlines where communities could benefit from the added space it offers.

【1】What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The greenhouse.

    B.The seafloor.

    C.Underwater system.

    D.Nemo’s Garden.

【2】Why did Luca start the underwater system?

    A.To combine his two hobbies.

    B.To feed the growing population.

    C.To seek sustainable farming.

D.To develop healthy ways of life.

【3】What’s the main idea of paragraph 5?

    A.The advantages of Nemo’s Garden.

    B.The construction of Nemo’s Garden.

    C.The structure of Nemo’s Garden.

D.The techniques used in Nemo’s Garden.

【4】Where is the text most probably taken from?

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence.

Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.

“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”

When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.

“I don't need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.

That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn't help sharing the incident that had taken place.

“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.

“Yes.” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”

As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him.
