26、Ways to protect eyes from screens
Too much screen time may cause serious eye strain (眼疲劳)and even a sharp decline of eyesight. That's a big problem a lot of people are faced with nowadays, especially those who work on a computer. The following tips may be helpful.
Get regular eye tests
Experts recommend having a comprehensive eye exam every year to detect (探测)problems before they develop. During this test, you should tell the doctor how often you use your phone and your computer. 【1】 Tell your doctor about it, and your eyes can be tested more accurately at that distance.
Give your eyes space
The closer your phone/computer screen is to your eyes, the harder they have to work to focus.【2】 If this makes it hard for you to read, consider increasing the size of the text rather than moving the screen closer.
Take breaks
This may not always be practical if you're quite busy, but it's important not to stare directly at a screen for too long. 【3】 While surveys have shown that many office workers take no more than half an hour a day away from their computer, it's recommended that you take a 15-minute break after every two hours spent at your screen.
【4】
Staring at a screen continuously for hours on end may make it difficult for you to focus. To avoid this, many eye experts recommend the “20-20-20 rule”---looking away from your phone/computer screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. The science behind his trick is that looking at objects at a distance relaxes the focusing muscle in the eye. 【5】
A.Exercise your eyes.
B.Give your eyes a chance to rest.
C.Make your screen more eye-friendly.
D.Studies show it’s an effective way to reduce tiredness.
E.You should also measure the distance from your eyes to your screen at work.
F.Make sure that you use your phone or computer in a room where the lighting is bright enough.
G.Studies on eye strain suggest that computer screens should be no closer than 40 cm from your face.
27、New research doubts the idea that dogs are naturally more tolerant and friendly than wolves. In the tests whether they can work together, wolves perform better than their domesticated relatives. Scientists say the findings challenge assumptions about how dogs were domesticated from wolves and came to live with humans.
Actually, wolves are highly social animals. They live in close family groups, raise puppies together and hunt in groups. This sort of behaviour is not seen in modern dogs. To test whether cooperation comes naturally to wolves and dogs, scientists carried out a classic behaviour experiment known as the rope-pulling test. The animals are rewarded with a large thick piece of raw meat only if they pull the rope together. The scientists found that dogs succeeded at only two of 472 attempts. Wolves, however, managed the task 100 times during 416 attempts. The experiment took place at the Wolf Science Center in Vienna, Austria, where wolves and dogs are raised from puppies in the same environment. This gives a clear understanding of the natural behaviour of both animals, away from the influence of humans.
Dr Krishna Veeramah of Stony Brook University said wolves are the only big carnivore that has been domesticated. “It is possible that their social behaviour was key to this, and thus studies like this help piece together more of the puzzle,” he explained. The story of how dogs came to be domesticated from wolves is complex and hotly debated. Some time around 30,000 years ago, wolves moved to the edges of human camps to search for leftovers. The long process of domestication began to change the behaviour and genes of wolves and they eventually evolved into the dogs that we know today.
Dogs and wolves are similar in physical appearance, although they have different instincts and temperament. The research suggests there is more to learn about the effects of domestication.
【1】What does the rope-pulling experiment intend to do?
A.To prove that wolves are more domesticated than dogs.

B.To cast doubts on the possibility of wolves being good and domesticated.
C.To state why dogs are more tolerant and domesticated than wolves.
D.To point out the new finding is different from the previous assumption.
28、She is a cute, quiet girl. As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her. But recently she has become somewhat mysterious, and not so open as before. She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key. Her mother can’t help worrying about her: what if she falls in love, which is too early for a girl of her age? After all, she is reaching the “dangerous stage”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.
One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate and would return late. As this was the first time, her mother agreed, but she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited till nine and decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. When the girl came in, the mother was watching TV, pretending nothing had happened. “Mom, I’m back.” “Yeah.” “Sorry to be late. Still sitting up?” “Yes, oh, that… who’s that boy?” The daughter was silent for a moment. “Ah. It’s my monitor. He gave me a lift on his way home. Mom, I’m going to bed.” “All right. Go to sleep early.”
Next morning when the mother went to the daughter’s room to do some cleaning, she found her diary left at her pillow. Finally she opened it. It read: Mom, it’s love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn’t.

29、
Who do you count as your friends? From our best friend forever to a work mate, it’s good to have someone to chat with or offer comfort and support. But when it comes to friendship, is it more important to have quantity or quality?
The recent isolation we have experienced due to the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒流行病) has made some of us question our friendships. We’ve fallen out of touch with friends and acquaintances(熟人), and it may feel awkward, but do we actually have to reawaken every relationship we once had? It might be time to think about who you kept in touch with, who you missed talking to, and who you didn’t. In short, maybe it’s time to reset your list of real mates.
There’s no duty to stay friends, and writing for BBC Worklife, Bryan Lufkin says: “While people have known for years that friendships are unquestionably good for your health, experts say it’s only natural for acquaintances and even friends to lose contact with each other as time goes on – and it’s nothing to feel guilty about.”
Of course, it can be hard to choose who’s in your friendship circle. This is what Suzanne Degges-White, professor at Northern Illinois University, calls our ‘friendscape(朋友圈)’. She says, “in life, as we go through certain stages and ages, our attention changes, and we want to be around people who are like us.”
So, changing friends is normal, but we still need those special friends who’ve known us long term. These are friendships we spend time on. According to Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Oxford, these are your inner circle of friends — your “shoulders to cry on” — and you have to see them at least once a week to keep them. He adds the friends that do keep at a distance are mostly “friendships of convenience”. But the advice for maintaining a good friendship is to share how you feel with someone you trust — this can help strengthen your friendship as well as giving you both a chance to support each other.
【1】What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A.Positive.
B.Negative.
C.Unclear.
D.Indifferent.
【3】What can we do to keep a good friendship from the last paragraph?
A.Try to stay friends whenever we like.
B.Regain every friendship we once owned.
C.Share how we feel with our trusted friends.
D.Feel guilty when losing contact with others.
【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A friend is a second self.
B.Is there a friend for life?
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D.Need a friend keep a certain distance?

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One late afternoon, Tina was driving on a highway when a severe snowstorm hit without warning. In a short time, the heavy snow, coupled with the strong wind, turned everything into white and made the road extremely dangerous.
Tina later found out that this kind of storm is called a “Saskatchewan screamer”, which comes on extremely fast with high winds. It’s really frightening and deadly to be caught in such extreme weather.
Unable to see the road clearly, Tina had to stop her car and call 911. The operator told her that phone calls for help kept flooding in and all the rescuers had been called out. She suggested that Tina should wait out the storm in her car rather than risk driving on or going out. She took Tina’s information and told her that an officer would call her back. Tina waited anxiously for almost two hours, but nobody called her yet to check in. “The storm showed no sign of stopping. What was worse, it was getting dark. I couldn’t see anything outside the car since the snow had covered all the windows. The wind was still howling and the temperature was getting lower and lower in the car. I had no idea whom I could turn to for help,” Tina later wrote in a Facebook post. “Alone and cold, I began to panic, worrying about getting hit by an oncoming vehicle, getting buried (埋没) in a snowbank, having my tailpipe blocked by the snow...I was really worried I couldn’t ever make it home to my family.”
That was when Tina realized that it was no use waiting passively for help. She decided to do something herself. So she took out her cellphone, logged on to the Google Map and determined her location. She found online a neighborhood Facebook group for the area that she was passing through and shared a comment about her trouble with her location marked on the map. Then all she could do next was sit in the car, praying someone could make a response to her as early as possible.
