26、Laughter is more like an animal call than it is like speech—but it's also one of our most important forms of communication.
In this talk, Sophie Scott will explore the natural history and neuroscience(神经学)of laughter, stressing its role in social contact and play, as well as its role in emotional expressions and communication. She will set out what we know about the neural basis of laughter awareness and production, and a little of what we know about laughter and humour. Sophie will also present some of the reasons why so few people study laughter scientifically.
Sophie has pioneered the study of the human voice as a social signal, and she has recently started to look for the ways that nonverbal emotional expressions like laughter are used socially. At night, she wants to turn theory into practice in the talk show.

27、Compared with some other parts of the world, Canada is not a country with a lot of particularly flashy traditions - which isn't to say none exist. In general, it's the aging process, and the various "key dates" that occur as a Canadian moves from babyhood to adulthood that tend to be the most celebrated and ritualized(仪式化了的)moments in mainstream Canadian culture.
Canadian couples will generally announce their pregnancy with great pride to friends and family as soon as they're aware, and it's common for girlfriends of the expecting mother to organize a baby shower-a small, lighthearted house party - to honour the new mom sometime before she gives birth. Shortly after the child is born, it's similarly customary for friends of the parents to visit and give at least one baby gift, usually a toy or clothes, to express congratulations.
If there's one thing Canadians love celebrating,it's the anniversary(周年纪念日)of their own birth. In recent years, birthdays have risen to become one of the most tradition-rich spectacles of Canadian culture. During childhood, most parents will arrange birthday parties for their children on the special day (or the closest available weekend), a fun excuse for the birthday boy or girl to gather up all their schoolyard friends and spend the afternoon hanging out. In their teenage years and adulthood, they begin to assume greater control over their own birthday plans.
Completing a phase of school in Canada is almost always celebrated with a fancy graduation ceremony. In their final year of high school (and sometimes middle school as well), students will celebrate the completion of their studies with some sort of party organized by the school, usually known as "grad night". These usually take the form of a fancy dress gala(庆典,盛会,演出)held at a local hotel, complete with a dinner, dancing and lots of awkwardly-posed photographs.

【4】How does the author organize the description of Canadian traditions?
A.From general features to specific.

28、Snacks, game machines and medical services have poured into the family of Quan Hongchan, the 14-year-old gold medalist at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, after the story of the talented diver striving to win the Games to support her low-income family and earn money for the treatment of her ill mother deeply touched us.
As the youngest athlete among China’s delegation (代表团), Quan amazed audiences around the world with her surprisingly perfect performance in the women’s 10-meter platform.
Quan immediately became one of the most-discussed Olympic athletes on Chinese social media and a “sweetheart” of many people not only for the snack-loving girl's likeable persona (形象), but also for her maturity and good heart after it came to light she was supporting a low-income family of seven. Quan said she wanted to “make a lot of money” to cure her mom's disease and visit an amusement park, which she has never been to. A hospital in her hometown Zhanjiang, South China's Guangdong Province announced that it would provide a full range of medical services for her mother. Several amusement parks, zoos said they would offer lifetime free pass for Quan and her family. A local businessman even offered 200,000 yuan in cash to Quan’s father, but was declined.
The passion for the young champion’s family, however, has appeared to become overly heated after some fans and Internet celebrities tracked down to her village home, causing local traffic chaos. 29、My first week in the United States was a cultural shock. Everything felt new to me, including the style of conversation, the community I lived in and even the type of food people ate.
In our community back home, people eat mutton and chicken. Pork and beef are also common among other communities, but eating beef is taken as an illegal act. Unlike Nepal, eating beef is common in the West where most of the people follow religions other than Hinduism.
Food is just an example. When people move from one part of the world to another, they should adapt(适应)themselves to the new culture. For example, going to the bars or getting drunk is not acceptable in my community, but it is common in the US after a certain age.
I was raised in a traditional Hindu family in Nepal. We have a conservative(保守的,谨慎的)opinion towards marriage. Arranged marriages(包办婚姻)are common in which families decide whether the two should get married. Free love marriages are not allowed and are seldom seen. Same-sex marriage is also considered impossible.
To me, culture is a matter of habit. The culture is so deep-rooted in people’s minds that most people are against changes. It is always easy for them to do what they have been doing throughout their life. It may be difficult for anyone to adapt to a new culture.
However, with travel being an unavoidable thing for modern people, one always comes across different cultures. In such cases, one should be respectful and adaptive to the culture other people follow. The world is always a better place to live in when we have spaces for people of all cultures.
【1】What does the Nepal law forbid people to eat?
A. Pork. B. Beef. C. Chicken. D. Mutton.
【2】What can we learn from the passage?
A. Most westerners believe in Hinduism. B. Getting drunk in Nepal is acceptable.
C. Anyone can enter the bars in the US. D. The writer came across a cultural shock.
【3】Which may be seen most in Nepal?
A. Open marriages. B. Free love marriages.
C. Same-sex marriage. D. Arranged marriages.
【4】What is the writer’s attitude to different cultures?
A. Negative. B. Respectful. C. Conservative. D. Indifferent.
30、People on a college campus were more likely to give money to the March of Dimes if they were asked for a donation by a disabled woman in a wheelchair than if asked by a non-disabled woman. In another _________, subway riders in New York saw a man carrying a stick stumble and fall to the floor. Sometimes the victim had a large red birthmark on his _________; sometimes he did not. In this situation, the victim was more likely to _________ aid if his face was spotless than if he had an unattractive birthmark. In_________ these and other research findings, two themes are _________: we are more willing to help people we like for some reason and people we think_________assistance.
In some situations, those who are physically attractive are more likely to receive aid. _________ in a field study researchers placed a completed application to graduate school in a telephone box at the airport. The application was ready to be_________ , but had apparently been “lost”. The photo stuck to the application was sometimes that of a very _________ person and sometimes that of a less attractive person. The measure of helping was whether the individual who found the envelope actually mailed it or not. Results showed that people were more likely to ____________the application if the person in the photo was physically attractive.
The degree of____________between the potential helper and the person in need is also important.
For example, people are more likely to help a stranger who is from the same country rather than a foreigner. In one study, shoppers on a busy street in Scotland were more likely to help a person wearing a(n) ____________T-shirt than a person wearing a T-shirt printed with offensive words.
Whether a person receives help depends in part on the “worth” of the case. For example, shoppers in a supermarket were more likely to give someone ____________ to buy milk rather than to buy cookies, probably because milk is thought more essential for ____________ than cookies. Passengers on a New York subway were more likely to help a man who fell to the ground if he appeared to be ____________ rather than drunk.
