27、 The world is designed for right-handed people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left? 【1】
The answer to it remains a bit of a mystery. Since scientists have noticed that left-handedness tends to run in families, it’s assumed that left-handedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it.
【2】 In fact, identical twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.
Historically, the left side and left-handedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 【3】 In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand. In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example, Jesus sits at God’s right side. God’s left hand, however, is the hand of judgment. Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland, it is considered bad luck to meet a left-handed person at the start of a journey. 【4】A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
【5】People come to realize that left-handedness is natural. Some researchers find out that lefties are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The left-handedness is more easily adaptable to the right-handed world as well. Being left-handed is no longer a sad story now; instead, it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.
A. In other words, left-handers are born that way.
B. Left-handedness used to be regarded as a disability.
C. The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.
D. Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?
E. Why do some parents force their left-handed children to become right-handed when writing?
F. In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.
G. Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject left-handedness like before.
28、 Good evening, everyone. As we celebrate International Dog Day, I want to focus on a specific type of dog that is perhaps the most misunderstood breed in the world—the pit bull. It makes me unhappy that public opinion about pit bulls is that they are extremely dangerous. If a pit bull is that meaning, that’s only as a result of being taught to fight other dogs to the death in dogfights. The truth is that a pit bull is very faithful and loving.
A pit bull is a cross between a terrier and a bulldog. That’s why their coloring can be different from one dog to the next. Pit bulls all have short fur. They came over to the U.S. from Britain with their immigrant farming families. Pit bulls guarded the cows, sheep and family from thieves. They were beloved members of the family because they were so faithful and loving. They were also very strong, especially their jaws.
Unfortunately, bad men turned a good thing into a bad thing. Since these dogs would do anything to please their masters, it was easy for these men to teach the dogs to be killers. Dogs fought other dogs in fenced “pits”. Dog fighting became illegal in the U.S. in 1875, but it still goes on. Today, pit bulls continue to be farm dogs, but they are also trained as police dogs, search dogs and of course they make great pets!
I have a pit bull myself. Piper is the friendliest dog you’ll ever meet. He sleeps next to me at night. Even though he is an adult dog now, he still acts like a puppy sometimes. He would never bite me or anyone else! With proper and loving training, pit bulls are the best pets ever!
【1】What is the meaning of the underlined word “breed” in Paragraph 1?
A. A specific type of dog. B. Public opinion about dogs.
C. Dangerous dogs. D. Farm dogs.
【2】Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A letter. B. A speech.
C. An advertisement. D. A report.
【3】When was dog fighting made illegal in the U.S.?
A. In the 18th century. B. In the 19th century.
C. In the 20th century. D. Never.
【4】What is the main purpose of the passage about pit bulls?
A. To explain how much the woman loves her dog.
B. To argue that pit bulls are not dangerous.
C. To help pet shops to sell more pit bulls.
D. To describe the history of pit bulls in the U.S.
29、It’s clear that COVID-19 conditions have affected people’s stress levels, sleep, and mental health. This, in turn, has led to our poorer performance on tasks that require attention, memory, or decision making. 【1】 Here are some steps you can take to clear the fog away.
Be more intentional about consuming news.
Nowadays we’re exposed to the ever-changing recommendations around COVID. Many social media make their money by grabbing our attention. 【2】 To reduce stress and keep sharp, you can cut down your media consumption and be more intentional about news.
Exercise regularly—outside, if you can.
【3】 When we exercise, we encourage blood flow through our bodies. If you have a park or open space nearby, try spending some time moving in green spaces. Research confirms that being out in more natural settings is helpful for our well-being and cognition.
【4】
The lack of socializing during COVID lockdowns may have been particularly hard on people’s cognition. A recent review of many studies confirms that socializing is important for keeping yourself cognitively fit. So, it’s a good idea to try to be with others to keep your brain functioning well.
Try new challenges.
While many of us have been tough during the pandemic years, we can do something good for our brains at any time: learn new things. 【5】 Whether there’s a pandemic on or not, using your brain in new, challenging ways is good for neural health. Including new things into your everyday routines could give your brain a fun workout.
A.Stay connected with others.
B.Look through the social websites.
C.But repeated exposure to crises does harm to our well-being.
D.Getting exercise, on the other hand, is often tied to better cognition.
E.Many of us are paying the cost of the pandemic in the form of “brain fog”.
F.One of the best tools for fighting depression and thinking more clearly is exercise.
G.Some people have learned to play a new instrument, write poems, or build furniture.

On November 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the world famous violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Lincoln Centre in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman's concert, you know that getting on stage is not easy for him. He got polio(小儿麻痹症) as a child, and has to walk with the aid of two crutches(拐杖) now.
That night Perlman walked slowly to his chair. Then he sat down and began to play. But, suddenly, one of the strings on his violin broke, You could hear it break—it broke with a loud noise. People thought to themselves, "He will have to get up to either find another violin or find another string for this one. " But he didn't. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began, and he played from where he had stopped. He played with such passion and such power. Of course, everyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him changing and recomposing the piece in his head
When he finished, there was a silence in the room. Then people rose and cheered. We were all on our feet, doing everything we could to show how much we appreciated what he had done. He smiled and then he said in a quiet tone, "You know, sometimes it is the artist's task to find out how much music you can make with what you have left.”
His words have stayed in my mind ever since I heard them. That is also the way of life. Perhaps our task in this quickly changing world in which we live is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.

It's true that 'global heating' and 'climate emergency' are – in terms of language – two simple phrases. But they send out plenty of messages.
If with 'global warming' we're still inside our comfort zone of handling the situation, entering the state of 'global heating' is like heading to a point where the delicate (微妙的) balance of nature is disturbed so much that there is no turning back. Everything will be changing: Coral will die, polar bears will lose their habitats completely, and extreme weathers like droughts and heavy storms will happen at a higher frequency. There is no denying that we're entering a 'climate emergency'.
'Decades ago when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the impacts could be seen as an issue for future generations, ' but, as Katharine Mach, a Stanford University climate scientist, told The New York Times, now it's definitely our issue, 'a shift (变化) we all are living together'.
However, getting these messages through is far from enough. It depends on each and every one of us to find a solution – if there are any solutions left to find.
'We have no time to waste, ' said the UK's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, according to the BBC. Corbyn urged that 'we take rapid and dramatic action now'.
Indeed, language matters. But action matters even more.
