二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The Australian beach town of Byron Bay has a traffic problem, especially during holidays, when local streets are full of cars. But now it's changed. The world's first fully solar-powered train runs on a restored(修复)train line that was out of use for more than a decade.

The solar systems on the roof of the train send power to a set of batteries that replace one engine; the other engine is still in place and can provide backup power in an emergency. As the train brakes, it generates more electricity, like a hybrid car. At a train station, the train can be plugged in to pull more power from solar systems on the platform roof. If there's a long period without sun---somewhat unlikely in this part of the world---the train can also plug in to get renewable energy from the local electricity supply.

"The large solar systems on the platform roof coupled with the solar systems on the train roof produce more solar energy per day than is required to operate an hourly return service," says Holmes, development director of the nonprofit Byron Bay Railroad company, which runs the train. With one full charge, the train can make 12 to 15 trips.

Volunteers fully restored the train to its old condition to attract more riders, which should take more cars off city streets of the beach town. The train fits 100 seated passengers, with room for more to stand, and also has a luggage room for bikes and surfboards. A ride costs a little more than ﹩2.

The nonprofits thinks it's a model that could be replicated (复制)elsewhere. "Our service has had no government support or funding at all, but for this to be replicated or improved upon, the key is for government to work with enterprises on the program." Holmes says. "Our service provides an eample of how the sun's energy can be used for sustainable transport solutions."

【1】Why is the solar train brought into use in Byron Bay? ______

    A.To attract visitors

    B.To reduce traffic

    C.To fight pollution

    D.To use solar energy

【2】Where does the train get energy on sunless days? ______

    A.From its engines

    B.From a hybrid car

    C.From the platform roof

    D.From the local electricity supply

【3】How does Holmes feel about solar energy equipment? ______

    A.It is labor-saving

    B.It is easily operated

    C.It is time-consuming

    D.It is power guaranteed

【4】What can be inferred about the solar-powered train from the last paragraph? ______

A.It may be popularized in the future

B.More scientific research should be done about it

C.It could be of little use in solving energy problems.

D.Financial support from the government is badly needed

  • 27、   Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam (骗局), at least in the US the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能够感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “having a lack of control is associated with depression(沮丧).”

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (温度调节器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workplace.

Pedestrian(行人) crosswalk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer-controlled traffic signals were introduced.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

“That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, said. “Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?”

1What was the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A.To analyze the functions of fake buttons.

B.To describe some different kinds of fake buttons.

C.To explore people’s different habits when it comes to pushing buttons.

D.To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.

    2In America,the“close”buttons on lifts_______.

A.work only when people press them hard for a while

B.cannot speed up the process of closing the door in any case

C.are fake for the convenience of disabled people

D.were specially designed to give people a sense of control

3The underlined part“for this same purpose”in Paragraph 6 refers to_______.

A.helping people to build up confidence

    B.making people more patient

C.making people with depression feel better

    D.giving people perceived control

4According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons______.

A.don’t know that what they press is fake

    B.should give up this habit

C.consider what they do to be meaningless

D.probably do so to kill time

  • 28、   Matt Owens of New Zealand was out minding his own business one day when he came across an injured magpie on the side of the road. The poor bird looked completely alone. 1

After spending plenty of time caring for his new friend, whom he named Swoop, Matt helped him walk and even fly. 2 However, the grateful bird chose to stay with and his cat instead!

At first, Matt was a little hesitant to introduce Swoop to Mowgli because so many cats love to chase birds. But since Swoop was part of their family. Matt sat down with Mowgli and helped the cat to accept his new brother. 3 Today, Swoop not only has an adorable relationship with Matt, but he’s also great pals with Mowgli. They just hang out with each other all the time.

4 In fact, the day the two of them met was the very same day Matt found out his dad had cancer. He experienced so much. It was his care for Swoop that gave him something positive to focus on during an otherwise difficult season.

Like any good parent, Matt fully expects that Swoop will leave him at some point to start his own family. 5 Matt is cherishing every moment they have together!

    A.It worked out perfectly!

B.It was not easy for Mowgli.

    C.While it's a bittersweet thought,

D.As Swoop only returns from time to time,

E.Therefore, Matt decided to take him home.

F.Swoop has made Matt's life better in more ways than one.

G.Finally, the time came to let Swoop fly back into the wild.

  • 29、It was one of those moments every new parent dreads (恐惧). My baby son was screaming as if I’d just dipped him in a bucket of battery acid (电池酸). It felt as if he’d been screaming like that for years, though he was only two months old. Even worse, this was happening in public — I was sitting with my howling baby in the food court of a Los Angeles mall, despairing (绝望) as other diners silently judged me while watching us over plates of food.

Until, that is, one woman — a complete stranger — did something and taught me a lesson about kindness that lingers to this day. She walked over to me and put her hand on my shoulder. “This won’t last forever,” she said. “I know it doesn’t seem like it right now, but things will get better. He’ll stop crying. You’ll get some sleep.” And then this blessed spirit delivered by the mall gods disappeared in the lift.

It was such a small thing, a tiny kindness, really, but it made all the difference. It was 2001 and I was living in a foreign city with a newborn, without friends or family, and I was terribly lonely. This woman had seen me, if only for a moment, and taken the time to make a human connection. It was just a minute out of her day, but it has stayed with me for nearly two decades.

We all want to be better in the world and more giving to others. But we can easily get hung up on the sheer magnitude of that challenge — making time to regularly volunteer or finding money to donate to a cause. Doing good doesn’t have to be an important task, though; it can be incremental (递增的). It can be as quick as a smile, a word, a phone call, an email. It can be the note you send to a friend who is feeling blue or the baby carriage you help carry down the subway stairs for a parent on their own, even though you’re late for work.

I’m reminded of a line from Brian Goldman’s bestseller, The Power of Kindness: “The opposite meaning of empathy is apathy (冷漠).” That is, the opposite of doing good isn’t doing harm; it’s doing nothing. Every tiny act of generosity — every door held open, every coffee bought for a stranger — builds a bridge to another person. It says, “I see you.” Today, when we spend most of our time looking at our phones, and not at people’s faces, that’s invaluable.

So, while I’m not particularly good at regularly volunteering or running marathons to raise money for charity, I’m committed to small gestures. I try to send a note of praise every day to someone whose work I admire. I’ve become phone friends with a lonely 87-year-old woman who contacted me about something I wrote, and who lives in a city far from her grown children and grandchildren. On airplanes, I find the new parents with panicked eyes and offer to hold their babies. I remember what it felt like when the screaming baby was mine. I remember when a tiny kindness felt monumental, enough to change the world.

【1】According to the passage, what makes the author dreadful?

A.Dipping her baby in a bucket of battery acid.

B.Being silently judged by other diners in public.

C.Sitting with her crying baby in a restaurant.

D.Failing to stop her baby’s constant crying in public.

【2】Why did the author mention her baby son’s crying in Paragraph 1?

    A.To introduce the topic.

    B.To prove her opinion.

    C.To show her helplessness.

    D.To create a disappointing atmosphere.

【3】What holds people back from being more giving to others?

    A.Being short of time.

    B.Being lacking in money.

    C.Keeping looking at their phones.

D.Always trying to do important deeds.

【4】A line from Brian Goldman’s The Power of Kindness is used in Paragraph 5 to show that ___________ .

A.doing harm to others is better than doing nothing

B.every small gesture counts in connecting people

C.people are supposed to pay more attention to others’faces

D.spending most of our time looking at our phones is invaluable

【5】What can be the most suitable title for the passage?

    A.The Kind Strangers

    B.The Power of Words

    C.The Small Mercies

    D.The Power of Kindness

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”
