二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Some documents have been making the rounds lately — where people who work various positions in different industries share how much they’re paid.

Bravo! It’s about time we blew up that old belief that salaries have to stay secret. This is not just a matter of curiosity. Having information about salaries can help narrow the gender wage gap, which has barely changed for more than a decade. Recently released date from the US Census Bureau shows that, on average, women working full time still are paid only 82 cents for every dollar paid to a man. And the gap is even wider for many women of color: Black women make 62 cents, and Latinas just 54 cents. What’s more, the pay gap even extends into her retirement. Because she earned less and therefore paid less to the social security system, she receives less in social security benefits.

Having greater access to salary information is helping to speed things up. A new research report by the American Association of University Women shows that the wage gap tends to be smaller in job sectors where pay transparency (透明) is a must. For example, among federal government workers, there’s just a 13 percent pay difference between men and women, and in state government, the gap is about 17 percent. But in private, for-profit companies, where salaries are generally kept under wraps, the gender wage gap jumps to 29 percent.

Fortunately, salary information is increasingly available on some websites. Certain companies and many human resources departments are pushing ahead with this practice. Of course, it’s going to take more than salary transparency to equalize earnings between women and men. But sharing salaries can and must be part of the solution. The more information women have about how jobs are valued — and what different people earn — the better they will understand their value in the labor market and be able to push for the pay they deserve.

【1】Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?

A.To reveal the severity of gender wage gap.

B.To confirm the previous belief about salaries.

C.To satisfy readers’ curiosity about others’ salaries.

D.To appeal to readers to share their salary information.

【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The inequality between men and women.

B.The need to keep salary information a secret.

C.The advantage of working for the government.

D.The benefit of making salary information public.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards sharing salary information?

    A.Critical.

    B.Favourable.

    C.Unclean

    D.Negative.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Why It Pays to Share How Much You Make

    B.Where Salary Information Difference Lies

C.What It Takes to Realize Gender Equality

D.How Woman’s Value Improves at Work.

  • 27、It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a plete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

1Why was the bike so important to the couple?

    A. The man’s job was bike racing.

    B. It was their only possession.

    C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.

    D. They used it for work and daily life.

2We can infer from the text that ____________.

    A. the couple worked 60 hours a week.

    B. people were busy before Christmas

    C. the stranger brought over the bike

    D. life was hard for the young family.

3How did people get to know the couple’s problem?

    A. From radio broadcasts.

    B. From a newspaper.

    C. From TV news.

    D. From a stranger.

4What do the couple learn from their experience?

    A. Strangers are usually of little help.

    B. One should take care of their bike.

    C. News reports make people famous.

    D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.

  • 28、Singapore researchers say they have developed a form of electronic skin that can create a sense of touch. They hope their invention will give people with prosthetic hands(假肢)the ability to identify different objects.

The skin device measures 1 square centimeter. The system contains 100 small sensors that attempt to recreate things like texture(质地),temperature and even pain. The researchers call the device Asynchronous Coded Electronic Skin(ACES),which can process information faster than the human’s nervous system. Machine learning methods trained the device to recognize 20 to 30 different textures. It can even correctly read Braille letters(布莱叶盲文)most of the time.

The system does not require the users’movement to work. They just need to slide to feel texture. But in this case the skin, with just a single touch,is able to detect textures of different roughness.

A demonstration showed that the device could identify the difference between a soft ball and a solid plastic one. “When you lose your sense of touch, you essentially become numb and prosthetic users face that problem,”said Benjamin Tee,leader of the research team. “So by recreating an artificial version of the skin for their prosthetic devices, they can hold a hand and feel the warmth and feel that it is soft. ”

Tee said his idea for the device came from the movie Star Wars, when character Luke Skywalker loses his right hand and it is replaced with a robotic one. In the film, the new hand is able to experience touch sensations just like the real one.

The artificial skin technology is still going through experiments and development. But Tee said there had already been a lot of interest in the system, especially from the medical community. Tee said similar inventions that his team has developed include see-through skin that can repair itself when torn and a material for wearable electronic devices that gives off light.

【1】What can we learn about the artificial skin in Paragraph 2?

A.It is sensitive to high temperature.

B.It reacts faster than our nervous system.

    C.It can recognize different objects.

D.It helps the users memorize Braille letters.

【2】What can be inferred from Benjamin Tee’s words?

A.The artificial skin feels like a real thing.

B.People with the artificial skin feel warm.

C.People don’t want to lose the sense of touch.

D.He is sympathetic towards the prosthetic users.

【3】What inspired Benjamin Tee to create the artificial skin?

A.The desire to help those in need.

    B.The life of the disabled.

C.A dream of earning more money.

D.A scene from a famous movie.

【4】Which word can best describe the artificial skin technology?

    A.Profitable.

    B.Stable.

    C.Promising.

    D.Challenging.

  • 29、   Think “art”. What comes to your mind? Is it sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese painting in the Palace Museum? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a dancing pattern of lights?

The artworks by American artist Janet Echelman look like colorful floating clouds when lit up at night. Visitors can not only enjoy looking at them, they can also interact with them — literally.

1 Exhibits such as these are certainly new and exciting, but are they really art?

Whatever your opinion, people have been expressing their thoughts through art with various tools and technologies for thousands of years. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labelled as “artists” rather than “technicians”. 2

Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. 3 Take for example one of China’s most famous paintings, Along the River During the Qingming Festival. As this artwork is rarely on display, people have sometimes queued a long time for a chance to see it. Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of it with 3D animation.

4 Not only can we interact with art, but also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people have created exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.

However, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct. Is the artist the creator of the art itself, or the maker of the technology behind it?

5 But one thing is for sure — with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.

A.Now art is more accessible to us than ever before.

B.Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess.

C.It’s not important whether they are artists or technicians.

D.They do this by using their phones to change their colors and patterns.

E.They watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime.

F.The art-tech combination is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”.

G.This means that art and technology have always been seen as two very separate things.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

    My Kindergarten Hero

We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors. Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.

However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment. Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year. He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best. He often snorted (鼻息声) when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.

Cameron suffered from autism (自闭症), but that didn’t matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was. He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom. I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron. Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero. Within a few minutes, Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.

Finally, it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures. I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero. Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron’s turn to share his hero. Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face. He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me. He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down. Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
