26、Some pessimistic experts feel that the automobile (机动车) is bound to fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-distant future when all autos will be abandoned (放弃) and allowed to rust. Other authorities, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future.
The car will undoubtedly change significantly over the next 30 years. It should become smaller, safer, and more economical, and should not be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.
Regardless of its power source, the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic jams. One proposed solution to this problem is the automated (自动化的) highway system. When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable (可伸缩的) arm will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail, which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically.
Once attached to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car’s movements.
The driver will use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination (目的地) into the system. The computer will calculate the best route, and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer that will warn him of his coming exit. It is estimated (估计) that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.
【1】One significant improvement in the future car will probably be _______.

A.A rail.
B.An engine.
C.A retractable arm.
D.A computer controller.
【4】In an automated highway system, all the driver needs to do is _______.
A.keep in the right route
B.wait to arrive at his destination
C.inform the system of his destination by phone
D.keep in constant touch with the computer center
27、In 2010, my mother-in-law gave me her rather simple but graceful, antique “secretary desk”. The desk easily fit into the tiny room at the top of the stairs. I felt so secure, and confident when I sat down and began each writing session. Despite the desk’s appeal, its limited storage capacity meant that I often put file folders and books on the small floor space around me. After each writing session, I painstakingly gathered the tools of the trade and placed them on a nearby shelf until the next session.
A few years into my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I acquired my own office. My husband, Bill offered on more than one occasion to buy me a new desk for my office, but I ignored his offer.
One day, we stopped at the local office supply store. Bill found what he thought was the perfect desk for me. “I want to buy this for you, sweetie. My writer needs a bigger desk. ”He hugged me.
“Thanks, but I don’t want a bigger desk!” I said.
“Why don’t you want a bigger desk?” he said. “You must be afraid of something.”
“I’m not afraid of anything,” I said. “Like I said, I really like my little desk. So don’t ask me again.”
He didn’t.
A few weeks later, while working in my new office. I looked around at the folders, books and papers lying all over my office floor but couldn’t find what needed to meet a contest deadline. My heart raced. I looked around my office. The room basically swallowed the tiny desk, making it look slightly out of place. Maybe I did need a bigger desk. Was Bill right? Was I afraid of something?
Unable to write, I pulled c. JoyBell C.’s book of poetry, All Things Dance Like Dragonflies (蜻蜓), from the bookshelf. I flipped through its pages, and her words about faith jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she had trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just trusting that as she opened up her wings and flew off in an unknown direction, things would work out.
At that moment, I recognized that a bigger desk symbolized bigger possibilities, stepping out in faith, and leaving my comfort zone.
【1】What was the limitation of the “secretary desk”?
A.It was too old to be functional.
B.It competed with the shelf for room.
C.It prevented the author focusing on writing.
D.It was a bit small in size.
【2】When did the author want to buy a new desk?
A.After she was stuck in a mess.
B.When she finished writing a book.
C.When she moved into a bigger house.
D.After she missed an important contest.
【3】What was the author afraid of before?
A.Unemployment.
B.Loss of inspiration.
C.Uncertainty.
D.Lack of trust.
【4】What would be the best title of the passage?
A.My Writing Journey
B.On the Wings of Change
C.My Lifelong Faith
D.On the Desk of Fate
28、 Listening to a radio broadcast in a foreign language is difficult for many of us. We may have studied the language for several years, and are able to read it, perhaps even write in it. But listening and understanding the spoken language require special skills. Some people have a natural ability that helps them to learn a language quickly, while others must study for a long time. Everyone, however, can improve his or her listening skills with practice.
We are good listeners in our own language because we have had years of practice. We understand the grammar and the language. We know what to expect a person to say to us in almost any situation. We have been in similar situations many times, and we have heard it all before. We can understand it, even if we do not listen carefully.
But this is not true with a foreign language. We must listen with our full attention. And we must try not to let the cultural style of our language affect our understanding of the foreign language. Listening to a foreign language broadcast is easier if we know something about it. There are clues that can help us. One clue is the time of a day. Morning programs usually contain many short items of news, information or entertainment. The items are short because most of us are getting ready to go to work in the morning. Often we do not have time to listen to long programs. Evening programs are different. There is time for more details about the subjects discussed.
We can get a clue about the program from the music at the beginning, but we must be familiar with the music of the foreign culture. The kind of music—serious and slow, or fast and light—can tell us what kind of program to expect. The name of the program can give us good information about what it will contain.
Another good clue is the broadcaster. The more we listen to the same person, the easier it will be to understand him. His speaking style will become familiar to us. Further, the broadcaster provides clues to the organization of the broadcast at the beginning of the program. The broadcaster usually gives us the highlights of the program to prepare us for the details that will follow.
【1】We are good listeners in our own language because______.
A.we have a natural ability to learn language B.we have practiced it for years
C.we listen to our own language more carefully D.our own language is much easier
【2】If you don’t have enough time, you can listen to______.
A.morning programs B.familiar programs
C.evening programs D.programs with soft music
【3】You can know the information of the program according to_____.
A.its music B.the broadcaster
C.its name D.the time of the program
29、 People spend about a third of their life sleeping and cannot survive without it. But while scientists have long understood the importance of getting enough sleep, the key part played by light exposure can sometimes be overlooked (忽视). The reason why light is so important is that it sets our body clock, through specialized light sensors within the eye. Our eye detects the light and dark cycle within our environment and adjusts the body clock so that the inner and outer day coincide (相符). This is so powerful that people who have eye damage can find their body clock is thrown off, leading to sleep problems.
Without any access to light, the human body clock appears to change, adding about half an hour on to its 24-hour cycle for each day of darkness. Jet lag (飞行时差反应) is the most obvious example of the effect light can have. Exposure to light in the new time zone helps reset our body clock to local time, telling us the right time to sleep.
In 1800, most people across the world worked outside and were exposed to the change from day to night. Today, many of us miss out on the natural environment as we mostly work inside. We have become a light-deprived (光照不足的) species, and this has far-reaching consequences for the quality of our sleep, and consequently our well-being. The proper amount varies from person to person, but we do know that our bodies need exposure to very bright light that most indoor lighting does not provide. One notable side effect is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a form of depression thought to affect 2-8% of Europeans, which is linked to lack of sunlight exposure.
Research in this area could help people make informed choices. Simply by reducing light exposure before going to bed, and trying to get as much morning light as possible, they could improve their sleep and well-being.
【1】What does the underlined part “it” in the first paragraph refer to?
A.The sensor. B.Sleep.
C.Light. D.The eye.
【2】Why is jet lag mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To show people in different time zones have different sleep patterns.
B.To advise frequent fliers to get plenty of sun to avoid discomfort.
C.To prove irregular light and dark cycles affect our body clock.
D.To explain why our body clock has a 24-hour cycle.
【3】What can we learn about SAD from the text?
A.It comes along with cold temperatures. B.It results from a lack of natural light.
C.It affects people living on islands. D.It happens mainly in summer.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy.
B.Natural light is the key to a good night’s sleep.
C.Our body clock is linked to the mood disorder.
D.Life is really hard for nightbirds.

32、The secret to a successful sequel(续集)—a secret
Keeping the entire cast and crew of a film a secret is hard. But when it’s a massive movie like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with some 700 people and 1,000 costumes—including 400 coats alone—it’s next to _________. All precautions are taken: characters are given code names, the smallest details are protected by nondisclosure agreements, and digital scripts are encoded and _________ after a certain amount of time in case of being copied and spread. It’s not quite magic, but it’s close.
The pressure to not reveal anything—even _________—is enough to give Eddie Redmayne a difficult time. “I’ve been sent this funny document which is _________ with double-caps, triple-underlined notes saying, YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT THIS,” says the Oscar winner, who returns as wizard Newt Scamander in the sequel, which continues the story of the earlier _________. Does he ever tell anyone? He leans in and admits, a little _________, that he does: his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.
How have they successfully kept it a secret? It certainly helps that J. K. Rowling, the writer of the work, is the _________ of keeping secrets. Even producer Tim Lewis, who has worked on eight Harry Potter installments, is ____________. “We haven’t seen scripts for the next one,” he says. “I am assuming Rowling knows the whole plan, but I couldn’t say.”
The earnings are high enough: the first Fantastic Beasts movie reached $814 million. That’s a number most studios would ____________, but when it comes to Harry Potter, expectations start sky-high. In a world filled with universes based on existing intellectual property—Star Wars, Marvel—appreciation fatigue is always possible. As a language arts teacher, I think it my duty to teach my kids how to use our tools of words well. Use your tool right—this is what I always tell them. But I never expected to learn that lesson from them.
I clearly remembered it was my 40th birthday. On that day, my sixth-grade students were seated in a large circle, each holding a different tool in their hand—a hammer, a flashlight, a screwdriver, etc. The students discussed how words are like tools—they have the ability to build or to destroy, and they discovered how the right tool used at the right time for the right job can bring about great results. They freely shared personal stories of how they had experienced someone’s words used as a tool, to wound or to heal.
I watched and listened with a sense of satisfaction—the students were engaged, attentive, and enjoying the lesson. They got it! It was one of those times when I sat back and enjoyed the magic of being a teacher—to have the opportunity to watch young people discover a greater truth about life about each other, and about themselves. There was no better gift than that.
As we neared the end of that school day, one of my students, Laura, had an unexpected outburst of defiance(违抗) in class. Busy scribbling (涂画) in her exercise book, she refused to work with her group. I was aware from reading Laura's file that she had struggled with defiant behavior in previous years, but we had developed a good relationship and she was always a respectful, thoughtful, and positive contributor to our class. Her behavior caught me off guard. “I'm disappointed in you!" With a sharp tone, I asked her to excuse herself and told her I would visit with her in our next-door meeting room after school. She refused to leave and sat silently, staring at me angrily from the back of the room.

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest of men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for.
However, instead of finding the holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.
The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come hack in two hours' time.
"However, I want to ask you a favor," he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. "While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill(溢出).
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
"So," asked the wise man, "did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?"
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.
"So, go hack and see the wonders of my world," said the wise man. "You can’t trust a man if you don't know his house.
