二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The clock always seems to be ticking rather too fast in the doctor’s office and the queue of patients outside the door seems to be pressing rather too hard. Some say it’s high time for the model of short, sharp one-to-one appointments to give way to shared medical appointments (SMAs共享医疗预约).

SMAs are doctor-patient visits in which a group of patients receive patient education and counseling(咨询), physical examination and medical support in a group setting. Typically SMAs are designed to have one or more doctors attend to a group of patients who share a common illness or medical condition. In contrast to one-to-one visits, SMAS provide a longer appointment time-frame as well as the opportunity for patients to have improved access to their physicians and meanwhile pick up additional information and support from peers.

However, doctors who have pioneered the shared appointment approach report that there are significant challenges involved. Dr. Sumego, director of shared medical appointments, Cleveland Clinic, identifies culture change as the most significant challenge. Physicians and nurses are trained in a model of personal service and privacy; the SMA approach is a fundamental challenge to those fixed ideas. They need shared goals and a way of testing the innovation against agreed standards. Dr. Sumego says, “The physicians may be worried about the possible chaos and efficiencies that are marketed. They also have to make the patients understand what their appointment is, and what the expectation is.”

“So, if an organization was looking to start shared medical appointments, I would advise them to start the buy-in from a few champion physicians, develop the work-flow and develop some experience. Provide some support behind what that best practice should look like. Create some standards so that, as the concept spreads, you can employ that experience to start the next shared medical appointments and the next.”

1What is the purpose of the SMA approach?

    A. To improve medical service. B. To promote doctors’ reputation.

    C. To conduct medical research. D. To meet patients’ expectation.

2According to Dr. Sumego, what prevents the SMA approach from being widely adopted?

    A. Personal service. B. Fixed ideas.

    C. Lack of equipment. D. Shared goals.

3What can the underlined “buy-in”in Paragraph 4 be replaced by?

    A. practice. B. organization.

    C. purchase. D. support.

4What can be learned about the SMA approach in the last paragraph?

    A. It is currently being questioned. B. It is impractical in some areas.

    C. It will enjoy wide popularity soon. D. It should be carried out step by step.

  • 27、Every time a new year is coming, people set out to better themselves. They promise they will lose weight, find a new job, or maybe even take that vacation they’ve always talked about. But why do we make these promises to ourselves, and where did this tradition come from? Why does this tradition live on when so many people fail to keep the resolutions(决定) they made? Well, we can start by blaming the ancient Babylonians.

Around 4,000 years ago in Babylon, the earliest recorded celebration honoring the coming of a new year was held. Calendars weren’t as they are today, so the Babylonians did it in late March during the first new moon after the Spring Equinox(春分). The festivities were meant for the rebirth of the sun god, but the Babylonians made promises in order to please their gods. They felt this would help them start the new year off well.

Resolutions continued on with the Romans. When the early Roman calendar no longer synced(同步) up with the sun, Julius Caesar decided to make a change. He consulted with the best astronomers and mathematicians of the time and introduced the Julian calendar, which more closely represents the modern calendar we use today. Caesar declared January 1 the first day of the year to honor the god of new beginnings, Janus. The Romans celebrated the New Year by offering sacrifices to Janus.

To this day, the traditions of the ancient Babylonians and Romans continue   around the world. So much that Google launched a Resolution Map in 2013 where people could add resolutions and see others adding theirs in real time. However, no matter how many people participated in Google’s project, the numbers are bleak when it comes to the number of people who maintain their resolutions----only eight percent of people are successful in sticking them out.

【1】Why did the ancient Babylonians make promises to their gods?

A.To honor the god of new beginnings.

B.To observe the rebirth of the sun god and please him.

C.To honor the coming of a new year and satisfy their gods.

D.To please their gods and hope for a good start of the year.

【2】What can we know about the tradition of the New Year’s resolutions?

A.The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions will soon die.

B.A lot of people don’t feel like making New Year’s resolutions.

C.Julius Caesar made January 1 the first day of a year on his own.

D.The history of making New Year’s resolutions is not well known.

【3】What does the underlined word “bleak” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Large.

    B.Unpleasant.

    C.Encouraging.

A.How Making New Year’s Resolutions Came Into Being?

  • 29、   Learning a foreign language can be a difficult task for most people. The degree of difficulty, however, differs from one person to another. Like studying any other subject, we have to spend much effort and time. Besides, an individual’s learning ability can be determined by the following factors.

My husband says I am a quick learner, but I easily forget new information, especially dates and figures. But my husband spends more time learning a new subject but seldom forgets what he has learned. Some people can learn new information fast, while others have to work a little bit harder at it. Others retain new knowledge longer, like my husband, while others easily forget what they just learned. How fast and well you learn new things are determined by your genes and your environment. My mother is a fast learner, while my husband has slow learning parents. The way we learn also differs. I like to write down what I’ve just learned. I also find that drawing diagrams and relationships work better for me. Compared with my husband, I hate memorizing data. I remember things better when I can visually picture them in my mind.

Foreign language resources are not so common here in our area. I’ve seen a few dictionaries in some bookstores but haven’t seen any CD or DVD about it. I don’t even think the stores here sell electronic dictionaries! I have to go to a big city just to buy one. However, you may easily get all of these materials. Make a list of all the resources you have access to in your neighborhood. In this way, when you attend a language school, you’ll know just where to find dictionaries to help you in your course.

In my opinion, this is the most important factor in learning a foreign language: your drive to learn. Different people are driven by different motivations. I want to learn a new language because I find it challenging. Others may need to learn it because of having a new job or working in foreign countries. The point is to determine whether you truly need or just want to learn a foreign language.

1What does the underlined word “retain” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Remember B.Acquire C.Spread D.Improve

2Compared with the author, her husband ________.

A.likes to draw diagrams B.hates memorizing data

C.learns new things slowly D.easily forgets new information

3What does the author think affects learning a foreign language most

A.The resources one can get in the neighborhood.

    B.The determination to overcome difficulties.

C.The motivation to learn a foreign language.

D.The ability to learn a foreign language.

4The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to ________.

A.share her experience in learning a foreign language

B.analyze why people cannot learn a foreign language well

C.tell us how to find the method of learning a foreign language

D.introduce some factors affecting our language learning ability

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
