二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Like most people living in the suburb, Janice Monkowski, who lives some 30 miles east of San Francisco, gets around mainly by car. For much of her life, public transportation was not even an afterthought. That changed recently when Monkowski, a selfdescribed technophobe(技术恐惧者), discovered Moovit. When she goes to San Francisco to meet friends, the smart- phone app let her plan bus and train trips down to the minute. “Moovit tells me where to walk and how long it might take to catch a bus to get to the train station,” Monkowski says.

Much like the navigation app Waze, which follows its users on the road to determine the best driving routes Moovit collects location data of nearby users to show how to travel along the way with less time and energy between two locations. Nir Erez who cofounded Moovit says, “Most commuters(每天长途上班的人) don’t know when a bus might arrive, let alone how it might connect with another transit service, or when walking or bicycling might be faster.”

In just several years Moovit has had 100 million users. Moovit is available in 44 languages and 82 countries, and commuters in more than 2,500 cities rely on it to get to and from work. In 2016 Moovit became the official transit app for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In 2018, Moovit was also chosen as the official mobility app of the Asian Games. When public transit doesn’t get a user all the way to where they want to go, Moovit may connect her to bikeshare programs or services like Uber.

As Moovit has grown to 100 employees, with headquarters(总部) near Tel Aviv and offices in big cities such as San Francisco, Athens and Rio, Moovit can provide better, more uptodate information at a lower cost. Best of all: It’s all built one data point at a time by people like Monkowski. When you go to San Francisco and don't want to drive before the city’s “terrible” parking and traffic, Moovit can give you another option. It’s very simple.

1How does Moovit help Janice Monkowski?

A.By helping her have a comfortable trip.

B.By helping her learn advanced technology.

C.By helping her balance her tight travel budget.

D.By helping her arrive at where she wants to go.

2What is the advantage of Moovit?

    A.It provides more good services.

    B.It involves more simple orders.

C.It predicts the most efficient trip.

    D.It stores more available information.

3What does the author want to show us in the last paragraph?

    A.The exact location of Moovit.

    B.The bright future of Moovit.

    C.The development of big cities.

D.Some special opinions on public transportation.

4What’s the best title for the text?

    A.The wide use of Moovit

    B.The unique development of Moovit

    C.The quick development of Moovit

    D.The obvious advantage of Moovit

  • 27、   Sometimes we may find that every week there are a lot of new stories about how climate change is affecting the planet, or new plans to battle its effects. But the concept itself isn’t new at all — in fact, scientists have been exploring questions about climate change for almost 200 years.

The idea of “greenhouse gases” goes back to 1824, when Joseph Fourier wondered what was regulating the earth’s temperature. Fourier concluded that the atmosphere must be responsible for containing the heat absorbed from the sun and described it as a box with a glass lid: As light shines through the glass, the inside gets warmer as the lid traps the heat. As Fourier’s ideas spread, it came to be called “the greenhouse effect”.

Scientists continued to study the greenhouse effect. Not until a Swedish chemist named Svante Arrhenius came along, did scientists understand how global warming actually works. After years of work, Arrhenius determined that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere did in fact have a direct effect on global temperatures.

Arrhenius found that CO2, and other gases trap radiation, which warms the atmosphere. Arrhenius was the first to suspect that burning coal could contribute to the greenhouse effect. But Arrhenius welcomed the warming effect on the planet. At a lecture later that year, Arrhenius noted that creatures of a warmer earth “might live under a milder sky and in less barren surroundings”.

While Arrhenius’ findings won him the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry, scientists kept debating whether the greenhouse effect was increasing until 1950, when researchers finally began to find strong data supporting it. By the end of the 1950s, American scientists had been sounding the alarm on the long-term consequences of climate change. Climate change research has come a long way since

Fourier first described the greenhouse effect - still, maybe Arrhenius should have been more careful of what he wished for.

1What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.The climate change. B.The greenhouse effect.

C.The atmosphere. D.The heat from the sun.

2What did Arrhenius think of the greenhouse effect?

A.It was beneficial for creatures on the earth.

B.It had both advantages and disadvantages.

C.It did more harm than good to human beings.

D.It was a punishment for human harmful activities.

3What’s the author’s attitude towards Arrhenius’ wish?

    A.Optimistic. B.Negative.

    C.Neutral. D.Ambiguous.

4What’s the main idea of the text?

A.Causes of climate change. B.Effects of greenhouse gases.

C.Findings about global warming. D.Explorations on climate change.

  • 28、   Advice to “sleep on it” could be well founded, scientists say. After a good night’s sleep a problem that couldn’t be solved the night before can often appear more manageable, although the evidence until now has been anecdotal. But researchers at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good night’s sleep can improve insight and problem-solving.

“If you have some newly-got memories in your brain, sleep acts on these memories and restructures them, so that after sleep the insight into problem which you could not solve before increases,” said Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist, at the university. To test the theory, they taught volunteers two simple rules to help them turn a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, hidden rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups: half were allowed to sleep after the training while the rest were forced to stay awake.

Dr. Jan Born and his team noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as likely to figure out the third rule as the other group. “Sleep helped,” Born said in a telephone interview. “The important thing is that you have to have a memory representation in your brain of the problem you want to solve and then you sleep, so it can act on the problem.

“But Born admitted that he and his team don’t know how restructuring of memories occurs or what governs it. Pierre Maquet and Perrine Ruby of the University of Liege in Belgium said the experimental evidence supports the anecdotal suggestions that sleep can help develop creative thinking. Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reason to fully respect their periods of sleep, they added.

1The underlined phrase “sleep on it” in Paragraph 1 probably means _____.

A.to get as much sleep as possible

B.to go on sleeping without being disturbed

C.to delay deciding something until the next day

D.to sleep till after the time you usually get up in the morning

2What is the purpose of the experiment?

A.To test problem-solving ability in sleep. B.To discover people’s insight during sleep.

C.To prove a good sleep helps solve problems. D.To discuss how to improve sleeping quality.

3How did Jan Born and his team carry out the experiment?

    A.Through comparison. B.Through interviews.

    C.Through talks. D.Through imagination.

4What can we learn about the experimental evidence?

A.It helps scientists control memories. B.It explains the role of sleep in human.

C.It tells us the role of sleep is a mystery. D.It shows sleep does good to creative thinking.

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
