二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、THEN WE CAME TO THE END

    Joshua Ferris

The first novel by American author Joshua Ferris was so different, because it is written in the second on; the group of odd office colleagues talk and act as a collective. It must have been hard to maintain, but Ferris does a great job. It is really a good novel set in boring office environments.

    THE GRAPES OF WRATH

    John Steinbeck

Obviously a classic and still popular, the themes of this novel are timeless and echo just us strongly today. Set during the Great Depression, the story follows a family of “Okies” — poor migrant farmers from Oklahoma — as they head west seeking work.

    PROPERTY

    Lionel Shriver

Short stories from one of our best contemporary writers. Exploring the theme of possessions and ownership from many angles, this is certainly one for Marie Kondo fans. I have long been interested in what it is about things that can hook some people. The drive to possess items that serve no obvious purpose is most appealing to me. Fine, if an item is something given to you by someone special. But if you take a look around you, some things are probably simply useless and unmemorable. Shriver’s book explores it better.

    THE LOVE THAT I HAVE

    James Maloney

This absorbing story is about Margot Baumann, who takes a job in a mail-room in what, as later becomes clear, is a concentration camp. The amazing thing is the perspective it gives of German life during World War . Of course not all Germans, probably the large majority, had any real idea of what was going on. Within Margot’s immediate circle you see the reactions among the German population to the rise and fall of their beloved — or hated-Fuhrer (元首). And nation.

1For whom is this text mainly intended?

    A.Novelists. B.Book addicts.

    C.Editors. D.Story tellers.

2Who may be liked by Marie Kondo fans?

    A.Joshua Ferris. B.John Steinbeck.

    C.Lionel Shriver. D.James Maloney

3What is special about THE LOVE THAT I HAVE?

A.It follows a family of “Okies”.

B.It is set in boring office environments.

C.It tells stories about a contemporary writer.

D.It explores the rise and fall of a nation in the world.

  • 27、   You can relax if remembering everything isn't your strong suit. Recent research makes the case that being forgetful can be a strength—in fact, selective memory can even be a sign of stronger intelligence.

Traditional research on memory has focused on the advantages of remembering everything. But looking through years of recent memory data, researchers found that the neurobiology of forgetting can be just as important to our decision-making as what our minds choose to remember.

Making intelligent decisions doesn't mean you need to have all the information at hand.   It just means  you need to hold onto the most valuable information. And that means clearing up space in your   memory palace for the most up-to-date information on clients and situations. Our brains do this by   creating new neurons(神经元)in our  hippocampus, which have the power to overwrite(重写)existing memories that are influencing our decision-making.

If you want to increase the number of new neurons in our brain ’ s learning regiontry exercising. Some aerobic exercise like jogging, power walking and swimming has been found to increase the number of neurons making important connections in our brains.

When we forget the names of certain clients or details about old jobsthe brain is making a choice that these details don't matter. Although too much forgetfulness can be a cause for concernthe occasional lost detail can be a sign of a perfectly healthy memory system. The researchers found that our brains facilitate decision-making by stopping us from focusing too much on unimportant past details. Insteadthe brain helps us remember the most important part of a conversation.

We can get blamed for being absent-minded when we forget past events in perfect detail. These findings show us that total recall(记忆)can be overvalued. Our brains are working smarter when they aim to remember the right stories, not every story.

1How can we help our brains produce more neurons?   '

    A. By having deep sleep frequently.

    B. By practicing swimming regularly.

    C. By doing mental labor repeatedly.

    D. By learning new skills constantly.

2Which of the following can best replace “facilitate” underlined in paragraph 5?

    A. postpone B. repeat

    C. promote D. abuse

3What conclusion can be drawn from the text?

    A. Memory loss is well worth noticing.

    B. Decisions can’t be made without memories.

    C. We shouldn't stress total recall too much.

    D. Forgetting is even more important than remembering.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Cautiondo remember to forget

    B. Why and how people choose to forget

    C. Want to become smarter? Learn to forget

    D. Being forgetful might mean you are   smarter

  • 29、   People tend to accept groups standards of behavior and thinking in a group work. Many illustrations(例证) could be given of this from everyday life, but what is of particular interest to psychologists is how much people’s judgments and opinions can be changed as a result of group pressure. Asch and others noticed that people in a group will agree to statements that are contrary to the evidence of their senses. It would be a mistake to think that only particular changeable people are chosen to take part in experiments of this type. Usually highly intelligent and independent people are used.

In a typical experiment, this is what may happen. The experimenter asks for volunteers to join a group which is investigating visual sense. The participants are not, therefore, aware of the real purpose of the experiment. Each volunteer is taken to a room where he finds a group of about seven people who are cooperating with the experimenter. The group is shown a standard card which contains a single line. They are then asked to look at a second card. This has three lines on it. One is obviously longer than the line on the first card. One is shorter and one the same length. They have to say which line on the second card is the same length as the line on the standard card. The other members of the group answer first but what the volunteer does not know is that they have been told to pick one of the wrong lines. When his turn comes he is faced with the consistent opinion of the rest of the groupall the others have chosen line A but he quite clearly sees line B as correct.

What will he do? According to Asch, more than half of the victims chosen will change their opinion. What is equally surprising is that, when interviewed about their answers, most explained that they know the group choice was incorrect but that they yield to the pressure of the group because they thought they must be suffering from an optical illusion(视觉假象), or because they were afraid of being different.

1The psychologists are especially interested in __________.

    A. the evidence of the experiment. B. the changes in the attitudes of people.

    C. the difference in people’s behavior D. the degree of changes of people’s opinions

2Why more than half of the victims changes their opinions in the experiment?

    A. Because they had been told about the answer

    B. Because thought the group choice was correct.

    C. Because they submitted to the group pressure

    D. Because their eyes were suffering from illusion.

3The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to _________.

    A. illustrate the influence of group pressure on individuals

    B. encourage people to act against any groups opinion

    C. invite more volunteers to join in Asch's experiment

    D. tell the readers how to perform psychological experiment

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

About ten years ago, my wife and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. I didn't like to carry all my keys in my pocket during a hike, so I took away the key to the car and left the rest in the car. When we came back, I put the key somewhere in the car without reattaching it to the key ring. Then we made a fire, cooked some food, and went to sleep in the back of the SUV.

The next morning, we were cleaning up our campsite when I saw a bird inside my car. I walked over, and it flew away. When we got in the car to go home, I couldn't find the key. We searched and searched even emptying out the car completely, but it was gone.

Then it hit me that the bird must have taken it. After all, those birds are known for stealing shiny things and decorating their nests with them. Keys are shiny. The bird was the thief! It made perfect sense to me. So I decided to find its nest.

But there is a problem: As everyone knows, the Grand Canyon is a little large in area, so I didn't like my chances of actually finding a certain nest belonging to a certain bird in a certain tree in all that space. But what other choice did I have?

My wife was not encouraging me. She said, “Are you crazy? You'll never find it! The Grand Canyon is the biggest hole on Earth!” I didn't answer and walked steadily forward until her laughter died away.

I struggled to keep hope as I searched dozens of trees and tracked every singing bird. It was like searching a needle in the sea. But, oh, how great my victory would be when I held the missing key from the bird's nest.

After study for hours, I went outside and up to the roof nearby for a break and watched people cwimming in the sea. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance. I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I’d seen these mini-tsunamis (小型海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my bodvboard (冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to call the coastguard(海岸警卫).My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so togetlier we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn’t used to this sort of emergency—I’d never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn’t think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

Tom and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Tom then moved the girl onto his board.

    Paragraph 1:

We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.
