26、 When we’re studying a new language, many of us approach it with fear and anxiety. However, we would benefit a lot by changing our focus, according to communication skills trainer Marianna Pascal.
Pascal has spent 20 years in Malaysia helping people speak better English. Over time, she has discovered a surprising truth: How well somebody communicates in a new language has very little to do with his language level — but a lot more to do with his attitude.
Pascal noticed that a lot of Malaysians went into English conversations with the feeling that they were going to be judged by how many mistakes they were going to make. And they had the idea of what good proper English is supposed to be and how far they would have to go to get there.
As a teacher, she’d noticed one specific student named Faisal. Despite not knowing much English, this guy could just sit and listen to anybody very calmly, clearly, and then he could express his thoughts beautifully.
Pascal realized when Faisal entered an English conversation, he didn’t feel judged. He entirely focused on the person that he was speaking to and the result he wanted to get. He got no thoughts about his own mistakes.
Pascal believes that speaking a language is not like those exams that many of us had to take in school, where a tiny spelling or grammar mistake would result in a big red X from the teacher. In the real world, small mistakes don’t matter — what matters is whether we’re able to make ourselves understood. She concludes, “If you want to speak English like Faisal with that great confidence, here’s the one thing that you can do when you speak: Don’t focus on yourself, focus on the other person and the result you want to achieve.”
【1】Why was Faisal successful in English conversation according to Pascal?
A.His spoken English was quite excellent.
B.His attitude to speaking English was right.
C.He and his partner were good friends.
D.He made few grammatical mistakes.
【2】What is the Pascal’s attitude to the mistakes English speakers make?
A.Tolerant. B.Careful.
C.Grateful. D.Worried.
【3】What should you do if you want to communicate effectively in English?
A.Try to express yourself correctly.
B.Remember to use a new language.
C.Avoid any mistakes while speaking.
D.Concentrate on what the other people say.
27、 Poets, songwriters and left—wing politicians hate the idea, but for decades, opinion—poll evidence has been clear: money buys happiness and the richer you are,the more likely you are to express satisfaction with your life.Until now,a survey of 43 countries published on October 30th by the Pew Research Centre shows that people in emerging markets are within a whisker of(一步之遥)expressing the same level of satisfaction as people in rich countries. It is in line with the standard view of happiness and income seen so far.
According to the survey,in 2007,57%of respondents in rich countries regarded themselves as happy;in emerging markets the share was 33%; in poor countries only 16%—a classic expression of the standard view. But in 2017, 54% of rich—country respondents counted themselves as happy, whereas in emerging markets the percentage jumped to 51%.
The sharp increase happened thanks to huge improvements in countries such as Indonesia (+35)and Pakistan(+22).In 12 of the 24 emerging markets, half or more people rate their life satisfaction in the top of the ladder.
This is not to say the link between income and satisfaction has been snapped. Poor countries still lag behind:only a quarter of the people there count themselves as happy—half the level of the other two groups. There is also a clear link between happiness and income growth.China's GDP rose at an annual average rate of 10% in 2007—2017 and its happiness level rose 26 points.
Within countries, richer people express more satisfaction than their poorer neighbors. The study divided respondents into categories with higher and lower incomes and fewer and more household goods. In every country in every group, richer folk with more goods expressed higher levels of happiness. So at a personal level, money does buy happiness. And if you ask people about different aspects of their lives—health, family life, religion, standard of living—it turns out that satisfaction with living standards still has the biggest influence on happiness.
【1】What's the standard view of happiness and income?
A. Income is not closely related to happiness.
B. Happiness does not depend on how much you earn.
C. The higher your income is, the more likely you will feel satisfied.
D. The more you are satisfied, the more you can earn every month.
【2】What contributed to the increase of happiness in emerging markets?
A. Their rapid development. B. Investment in emerging markets.
C. Economic downturn. D. More cooperation with rich countries.
【3】What's the purpose of the writer by mentioning China's GDP?
A. To prove that China's GDP growth led to the happiness of people in Asia.
B. To remind readers of the progress that China has made.
C. To express the author's concern about the development of emerging markets.
D. To show that there is a link between happiness and income growth.
【4】What is the author's attitude to the standard view of happiness and income?
A. Disappointed. B. Skeptical
C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
28、 In the first days after a team of 25 delivery robots landed on George Mason University's campus in January, they appeared to cause curious glances and many photos but not much else.
It was clear, officials said, that more time and more data would be necessary to understand whether the robots would change the campus culture or become forgettable. Two months later,an extra 1,500 breakfast orders have been delivered autonomously, according to the technologists of Sodexo,a company that manages food service for GMU and works closely with the robots.
Research has shown that up to 88 percent of college students skip breakfast, primarily because of lack of time, but that number is starting to turn around when delivery robots arrive on campus. They're constantly seen making the 15 minute trip from campus restaurant to a handful of nearby dorms,as well as to other buildings across campus, where students meet them. Two months later, breakfast has replaced dinner as the go-to meal for robot delivery.
Sodexo officials have noted that college students are main users of food delivery apps and place a high value on convenience and multiple options when they dine.During the morning hours, restaurant experts say, there is generally more emphasis(强调)on speed than any other part of the day.Combine college students'love of food delivery with messy morning routines, and perhaps they have a perfect recipe for robots to deliver in the campus.
The robots also provide campus officials with valuable data showing how meal plans are being used, which could lead to changes in how the university serves students over time.Sodexo technologists also announced Monday that a new team of more than 30 robots is launching at Northern Arizona University.
【1】Why don't most college students have breakfast according to the research?
A.They are on diets.
B.They have a tight schedule.
C.The food doesn't agree with them.

C.College professors. D.Restaurant managers.
【3】What do we know about the first 25 delivery robots?
A.They make timely deliveries.
B.They were ignored at first.
C.They mainly carry dinner at present.
D.They have changed the whole campus culture.
【4】What's the beat title for the text?
A.Delivery services grow fast in college.
B.Breakfast in necessary for college students.
C.Robots help with GMU's campus management.
D.Delivery robots are changing students'eating habits.
29、Your True Stories
On the Wing
My husband had passed tragically and unexpectedly the night before. I returned home the next morning with my sister-in-law, my emotional support. We sat in the upstairs loft, sharing stories about a man who’d left us too young. I glanced out the window and noticed a woodpecker on the roof. It appeared to be watching us. A member of a species rarely seen here, the bird sat for almost 20 minutes as we reminisced(追忆). I affectionately named it after my late husband. It has been five years he passed, and a woodpecker continues to appear at my weakest moments.

Like Son, Like Father
Caught in a sudden downpour on the last day of a bike-packing trip, I ducked(躲避)into the lobby of a nearby supermarket for cover. As I waited out the storm with my bike and gear, a teenage boy invited me to spend the night with his family, I gladly accepted, and he went to find his parents. While I waited, an older man made me the same offer. I thanked him and said I already had a place to stay. Shortly after, the boy returned with his parents. The man who had approached me was his father.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internet, they appeared to 【2】that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.
While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”,there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to【3】. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.
“Users are becoming slightly more 【4】what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”
But 【5】no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.
Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 【6】 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.
Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!,said that it was “the first step to【7】passwords”. He said it was a(n)【8】that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.
It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or,“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.
“We are, for the most part,predictably【9】when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 【10】, and so do password crackers.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 【2】.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 【3】 supporting.
The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 【4】 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 【5】.
If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 【6】 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 【7】 of all resources.
And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 【8】 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 【9】 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 【10】 human being.

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest of men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for.
However, instead of finding the holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it. The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him.
The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come hack in two hours' time.
"However, I want to ask you a favor," he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil. "While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill(溢出).
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
"So," asked the wise man, "did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?"
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.
