26、   Commercial organizations have not been slow to see the financial rewards of using music in shops, restaurants, banks and there is now a fascinating and significant body of literature on the topic. This has been spearheaded (做先锋) by the British psychologist Adrian North in many studies that have been imaginative and inspiring.

In one study this research group agreed with a supermarket to play either stereotypically (带有成见的) French or German music on alternate days for a fortnight in the part of the shop selling wine They measured the amount and type of wine bought during this period. Yes, it worked! French music led to more sales of French wine and German music led to a preference for German wine.

In another study the research team played different kinds of music while people were tasting wine. They showed, as predicted, that the words people used to describe wine like smooth or bold were a part function of the music that was playing.

In a similar study either classical, pop or no music at all was played in a British restaurant over the course of nearly 3 weeks. Researchers measured time and money spent, the latter being broken: or down between drink and food. The customers spent more time and money (on starters and coffee) when the classical music was playing. The researchers offered three explanations for these potentially important findings: classical music was synergistic (协同的) with all other aspects of the restaurant  atmosphere.

Second, the patrons (顾客) simply preferred it, and transferred their good response to increased time and money spent. The third explanation was that classical music promotes an upmarket (高价位市场的) atmosphere in which it is natural to spend more money. Of course all explanations could function at the same time.

27、   We talk a lot about air pollution. Here in Hong Kong we always complain about light pollution as well. Then, there is noise pollution. It's the same in many cities around the world. In Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, people have been complaining about/the noise made by drivers who continually sound their car horns(喇). That is until recently, when something was finally done about it.

The Chief District Officer of Kathmandu had received many complaints about horn pollution. He said that everyone felt the use of the car horn in recent years had become excessive. Researchers in Kathmandu found that for about 80 percent of the time, it really was not necessary for drivers to use their car horns. Sounding the horn to make a noise had become more of a habit. It was no longer being used as it was supposed to be used: to warn people of danger.

At the beginning of the Nepali New Year in 2017, the local government passed a law to ban the use of car horns unless used correctly.

Within six months, 11,000 fines(罚款) had been collected by the local traffic police. The e fine was about HK S360. A taxi driver in Kathmandu can make about HK S1, 000 per day, so he could lose about one-third of his money if he broke the law.

As usual, there were many complaints from drivers. They said that cows and dogs were free to walk on the roads. They always caused danger. Sounding a car horn was the only way to get them to move out of the way. And although there were quite a few traffic lights in the streets of Kathmandu, very few of them worked. This meant there was often a traffic mess.

The ban on using a car horn went ahead, and within a few weeks the streets of Nepal's capital were quieter-even though they were still just as busy. Because of the ban, drivers are a little more careful when they drive. Fewer accidents have been reported. The local government says the horn ban will now be copied in other areas of Nepal.

The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection.

The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.

The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other applications on your phone, so developers could, for instance, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.

Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes.” But Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.

The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, for $99 to $199, developing on features. The U. S. is the first target market.

When they were leaving, their father said, “Boys, I have to go to town and I want you to take care of Ben. You can carry him together but be careful!” Although they thought Ben was too young to take risks, they still took him.

When the three arrived at the shore, they were lucky to find an old rowboat with oars (桨).Carl and Simon took turns to paddle (划桨)the boat.

Suddenly they noticed the old boat leaking slowly. Carl asked them not to worry and said that they could empty water when they got back. But as the boys neared the island, they struck a rock hidden under the water. It enlarged the hole, more water pouring in. They were glad to be safe on shore!

“How can we get back with the weight of us?” Simon wondered.

Carl answered “You row Ben across, and then come back for me. If we move fast, it won’t sink with only two.” Simon agreed.

The boys started to explore the island. It was flat with many trees. In a couple of hours they had gone all around the island, but when they headed for their boat, they were shocked! Their boat was bumping against trees. The tide was coming in! The island was disappearing!

The boys took a rock and tried to fill it into the hole but they only made it worse because of the old wood. Carl thought a minute “Simon, you take Ben as fast as you can. Then run for the house and see if Dad can come to rescue me. I can climb a tree or something that will give me maybe another hour.” The brothers hugged. Then Carl turned the boat around, helped Ben get in and pushed it as hard as he could toward home

The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.

As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.

"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."

The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

Paragraph 1: The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine.
