  • 26、   Are you more of a Botticelli or a Van Gogh?

A new feature in the Google Arts & Culture app reveals how a picture of your face may resemble a historical painting.

The app went viral this weekend after users discovered the entertaining feature that analyzes selfies and matches them to historical artwork. It pulls from Google's digital collection of artworks from museums around the world.

The feature rolled out to the app on iOS and Android last month. But users—even some big names such as Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, musician Pete Wentz, and actors Felicia Day and Kumail Nanjiani—shared their results on news feeds.

The app became the top downloaded iPhone app over the weekend, and landed in the top 10 on Android, according to analytics firm App Annie.

To find your fine art doppelganger(与某人外貌相同的人), open the Google Arts & Culture app and scroll until you see the "Is your portrait in a museum?" feature. Tap "get started"and you'll be guided through the process.

It's currently only available in the U.S.

Google said the experimental feature uses computer vision technology to scan facial features and extract data to match with paintings. The company said it won't use data from photos for any other purpose but to match it with images in its catalog. It only stores selfies for the time it takes to find matches, Google said.

The selfie feature is similar to other apps that use matching technology to find lookalikes. Microsoft's What Dog app can identify and classify dogs based on photos uploaded to the app.

The Google Arts & Culture app is part of the Google Cultural Institute, which provides information about artists, scientists and historical figures from 1,000 institutions worldwide.

1Why did the Google Arts & Culture app get so popular?

A.Because some famous people used it.

B.Because it can match selfies to some paintings.

C.Because it's more practical than entertaining.

D.Because it was the top download.

2How can you find your fine art doppelganger?

A.By visiting Google's digital collection of artworks.

    B.By analyzing your selfies.

C.By opening the app and following its guide.

3What can you infer from the 8th paragraph?

A.The feature of the app has nothing to do with data.

  • 28、Extremely low temperature, strong winds and endless white snow are just a few of the challenges explorers must face in the Polar areas. But a 16-year-old British girl didn't let these worry her. On April 15 Alicia Adams became the youngest person to walk to the North Pole.

She completed the adventure with her geology teacher and two other companions. Each of them carried 30 kilograms of supplies. At times temperatures fell to -45C during the 320-kilometre trip. But they made it in ten days, two days less than her famous father, David Adams' time record for the same walk.

“It is a really good feeling, more of an achievement,” said Alicia Adams after coming to the end of her adventure. “The winds were like angry beasts roaring behind us. The trip seemed endless and there was nothing in sight: no buildings, no people, and no animals. Sometimes we had to walk across lakes covered with thin ice, which is the deadliest threat.”

David Adams is a top British explorer, who reached both the South and North poles on foot. He also set a series of hot air-balloon records and climbed the highest mountain on every continent. “I take pride in what she has achieved but a bit annoyed that she has beaten my time,” her father said playfully.

Asked if there would be any future joint adventures, the dad joked, “I think I would be struggling to keep up with her now.”

Alicia returned to Britain last week where she faces a more normal task of going to school. And she said her achievement would not necessarily mark the start of a life-long exploration. “Going to school is on top of my list,” she said.

【1】How long did it take David Adams to complete the same adventure?

    A.6 days.

    B.8 days.

    C.10 days.

    D.12 days.

【2】What was the biggest danger during Alicia Adams' adventure?

A.The lack of equipment and supplies.

B.The angry wild animals in the polar areas.

C.The strong icy winds and endless white snow.

D.The need to cross the lakes covered with thin ice.

【3】How did David Adams really feel about his daughter's adventure?

    A.Angry.

    B.Proud.

    C.Worried.

    D.Sad.

【4】What is Alicia's plan for the near future?

A.To go back to school to study.

B.To start more explorations by herself.

C.To challenge more of her father's records.

D.To have an adventure together with her dad.

  • 29、   Social media has become a part of our lives. It is the communication tool that children have been brought up with, but it is still illegal(违法的) for a Canadian child under the age of 13 to have a social media page.

This is a shame when you consider the learning opportunities that social media offers. At our school, Vernon Christian Elementary school in Vernon, B.C., I can see how it provides children with the chance to learn how to communicate properly and effectively. If they want their friends to follow them or re-tweet (转发) their messages, they must learn to write them creatively in an interesting and amusing style , attach (粘贴) pictures , and ask questions to invite a response. Students will learn a lot from the process.

Social media can also help students to sharpen up their writing skills. My students usually use the blog to keep a diary about something that interests them, and suddenly they appear to love writing.

So is it necessary to restrict (限制) students in the social media age? Not really. A survey has found that 59 percent of children have already used a social network by the time they are 10 , and 43 percent have messaged people they didn't know by the age of 12.

Of course, primary schools should care about the dangers of social media. Measures(措施) should be taken to protect students from the dangers. In our school , we have a social media platform with a teacher's dashboard (信息窗) where all activities can be managed. On one occasion, a boy wrote hurtful comments (评论) about a girl in a post message. After a discussion with him about why it is wrong to send hurtful emails, he was embarrassed and said sorry to the girl.

Over the past 23 years teaching in British Columbia, I have focused on computing. I therefore take notice of the bad effects of social media on primary students. However, social media offers learning and communicating opportunities to elementary students. More importantly, we cannot ignore(忽视) the fact elementary children are using social media. I strongly believe that exposing students to the social media will equip them to be wiser grow-ups in the future.

【1】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The writer has made students learn a lot by using social media as a teacher.

B.All the students can't be allowed to use social media in British Columbia.

C.In Canada , children under 13 have rights to use social media pages freely.

D.The writer has paid less attention to primary students in using social media.

【2】What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage?

A.More schools will encourage students to use social media skillfully.

B.It is necessary to stop the students from using social media at school.

C.Social media at school will make great influence on students' future.

D.It is so important to keep school websites safe in Information Age.

【3】In the writer's opinion social media ______ at school.

A.will take the place of other learning styles slowly

B.can help students make a good habit of learning

C.will make students take less interest in learning

D.should be developed more widely among students

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.
