二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、A master of words, a literary genius and a philosopher, Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is known by many as the greatest writer of all time. Even in 2020, 110 years after his death, his two greatest masterpieces, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, continue to be widely read, appreciated and highly influential.

“If the world could write by itself, it would write like Tolstoy,” the Russian author Isaak Babel once said. Tolstoy’s realistic fiction is famous for its powers of observation and ability to mine the depths of human consciousness, such as the psychological exploration of a married woman in Anna Karenina. In War and Peace, Tolstoy also describes Russia’s national soul and expresses public unity through his many characters. His characters feel alive; they grow, they change and they stick in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.

Tolstoy’s influence on literature is without comparison. Authors regularly mention his novels as their highest ambition, works that they could only dream of writing themselves. American writer Francis Scott called Tolstoy the “greatest of all novelists” in his essay. He wrote, “from his first words, we can be sure of one thing at any rate – here is a man who sees what we see, who proceeds, too, as we are accustomed to proceeding, not from the outside inwards but from the inside outwards.”

“He defends fundamental values such as love, friendship and family relations. He gives positive answers to the questions mankind is asking. In this sense he gives more hope,” Tolstoy’s great-great grandson, Vladimir Ilyich Tolstoy, said.

Tolstoy’s message of peace has even had an effect on the real world. He inspired the leader of India’s independence movement, Mahatma Ghandi, and his philosophy of non-violence over the course of a year in which they wrote letters to each other.

【1】What does the second paragraph intend to tell us?

    A.The writing style of Tolstoy.

    B.Tolstoy’s influence on other authors.

    C.The characters in Tolstoy’s works.

D.The introduction to the greatest works of Tolstoy.

【2】Which words can best describe Tolstoy according to the passage?

    A.Humorous and caring.

    B.Determined and optimistic.

    C.Productive and hard-working.

    D.Insightful and peace-loving.

【3】How does the author introduce Tolstoy in this passage?

    A.By contrasting with other authors.

B.By analyzing characteristics of his works.

    C.By quoting comments and opinions.

D.By describing his deeds in life.

【4】Which can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Tolstoy and His Works

    B.Tolstoy’s Life and Achievements

C.War and Peace: a Great Masterpiece

    D.Tolstoy: a Writer Beyond Comparison

  • 27、   Living in an urban area with green spaces has a long-lasting positive impact on people’s mental well-being, a study has suggested. UK researchers found moving to a green space had a sustained positive effect, unlike pay rises or promotions, which only provided a short-term boost.

Co-author Mathew White, from the University of Exeter, UK, explained that the study showed people living in greener urban areas were displaying fewer signs of depression or anxiety. “There could be a number of reason,” he said, “for example, people do many things to make themselves happier: they strive of promotion or pay rises, or they get married. But the trouble with those thins is that with those things is that within six months to a year, people are back to their original baseline levels of well-being. So, these things are not sustainable; they don’t make us happy in the long term. We found that for some lottery winners who had won more than 500,000 the positive effect was definitely there, but after six months to a year, they were back to the baseline.”

Dr. White said his team wanted to see whether living in greener urban areas had a lasting positive effect on people’s sense of well-being or whether the effect also disappeared after a period of time. To do this, the team used data from the British Household Panel Survey compiled by the University of Essex.

Explaining what the data revealed, he said: “What you see is that even after three years, mental health is still better, which is unlike many other things that we think will make us happy.” He observed that people living in green spaces were less stressed, and less stressed people made more sensible decisions and communicated better.

With a growing body of evidence establishing a link between urban green spaces and a positive impact on human well-being, Dr. White said, “There’s growing interest among public policy officials, but the trouble is who funds it. What we really need at a policy level is to decide where the money will come from to help support good quality local green spaces.”

1According to one study, what do green spaces do to people?

    A.Improve their work efficiency.

    B.Add to their sustained happiness.

C.Help them build a positive attitude towards life.

D.Lessen their concerns about material well-being.

2What does Dr. White try to find out about living in a greener urban area?

    A.How it affects different people.

B.How strong its positive effect is.

C.How long its positive effect lasts.

    D.How it benefits people physically.

3What did Dr. White’s research reveal about people living in a green environment?

A.Their stress was more apparent than real.

    B.Their decisions required less deliberation.

    C.Their memories were greatly strengthened.

    D.Their communication with others improved.

4According to Dr. White, what should the government do to build more green spaces in cities?

    A.Find financial support.

    B.Improve urban planning.

C.Involve local residents in the effort.

D.Raise public awareness of the issue.

  • 28、   How do you feel about socks? Depending on how you view them, they can either be a necessity — in which case black, blue or grey will do — or they are a window to the way you can show off your personality and attitudes different from others’. Sounds too dramatic and crazy? Well, a new study has found the crazy socks you choose not only say a lot about you, but also say a lot about how people see you.

Despite our traditional attitudes, the study published in The Journal of Consumer Research confirmed the theory that people who are nonconformists (不墨守成规的人) can potentially be viewed as having higher status and more competent (能干的) than those who obey social rules. So what does this say about your choice of wearing bright neon or rainbow-striped socks?

Well, it found people who have shown to deliberately (故意地) choose to wear strange socks, are seen as having increased status and competency in the eyes of others.

“We believed that, under certain conditions, nonconforming behaviors can be more beneficial to someone than simply trying to fit in. In other words, when it looks deliberate, a person can appear to have higher status and a sense of competency,” stated authors of the study, Silvia and Francesca Gino from Harvard University.

Dr. Adam, a social psychologist from the Northwestern University, conducted a study that showed what we wear affects the way we think, feel and act. And this includes our socks. When we put on our silly and crazy socks, we are, in part, showing off our uniqueness and our confidence. It’s this belief that helps us to skillfully achieve more success without lack of bravery or confidence.

So, if you’re a lover of fun and unusual socks, then go out into the world and embrace them. Not only will you give people an insight into your nonconforming, unique personality, but they will hold you in good status as a result!

1What is the study published in The Journal of Consumer Research mainly about?

A.The function of socks. B.The different characters of people.

C.The influence of wearing crazy socks. D.The reason why people achieve success.

2How do people view those who wear unusual socks?

A.They hate social rules. B.They appear silly and crazy.

C.They are much wealthier. D.They are more outstanding and talented.

3What does the author advise people to do?

A.Wear the socks they like. B.Have fun and enjoy the life.

C.Hold good status in the world. D.Let people have their own personality.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Trying to fit in will help you have higher status. B.Unusual socks are fashionable in society.

C.People should avoid wearing silly socks. D.What we wear may affect who we are.

  • 29、   The internet isn't always a happy place. But there are groups trying to change that. Kuakuaqun, or “praising group” on Wechat, in which people send out compliments and positive messages, are becoming popular among university students in China.

Praising groups have been founded by students from several universities, such as Fudan University, Communication University of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. People can even buy memberships of such groups on online platforms like Taobao. Once admitted, they make complimentary comments about each other and even ask to be complimented on particular things.

The praising groups come at a time when the mental health of young Chinese is getting attention. As young Chinese seek company and confidence, the praising groups meet a lot of psychological needs. “The group allows me to see the good qualities in myself that I often overlook and look at the bright side of everything. Kindness from strangers can help me feel much better,” Tian Jiayin, 22, told China Daily.

The popularity of chat groups is also a reflection of Chinese culture, reported Global Times. As many young Chinese are raised to be modest, it’s uncommon for them to openly seek and give praise. As a result, they desire compliments as they grow up. “If the kids got more praise from parents and teachers, their desire for praise wouldn't be so strong,” said Dai Ji, a psychologist from Hunan University of Commerce.

But Chen Kan, a psychologist from Fudan University, warned that members of praising groups should be cautious about giving or receiving praise. “The biggest risk is the constant emphasis on the ‘false self’, which makes it harder to see the ‘true self’,” she said.

1What does the underlined word “compliments” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. praises B. questions

    C. advice D. information

2Why do many Chinese university students like Kuakuaqun?

    A. It gives them a discount on Taobao.

    B. It helps them with their studies.

    C. It makes them feel confident.

    D. It helps them make new friends.

3What does Chen Kan think of giving or receiving praise?

    A. Receiving praise is more helpful than being modest.

    B. Parents and teachers should give young people more praise.

    C. kids should be encouraged to openly seek and give praise.

    D. Too much praise might stop kids from seeing their true selves.

4What is the main idea of the article?

    A. Tips for getting motivated

    B. The “lost” generation in China

    C. Origin of the praising culture in China

    D. Advantages and disadvantages of Kuakuaqun

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
