  • 26、   A team of researchers in the U.S.has found that office workers sleep more hours each night when exposed to more sunlight during the day.

Previous research has shown that when office workers are exposed to least natural light during their shifts, they tend to sleep less at night than people who are exposed to more sunlight during the day.1In this new effort, the researchers sought to learn more about the sunlight and sleep connection by carrying out an experiment in an office building in Durham,North Carolina.

The experiments involved testing the differences in sleep patterns for people working in nearly the same office environments situated right next to each other.2One office had the traditional blinds(百叶窗)that prevent much of the sunlight coming through the large glass windows. In the other office, the windows were treated with a special technology that allows more sunlight to pass through.

3At the end of the week, the workers were asked to trade offices where they worked for another week. Also, each of the workers was fitted with a wrist device that measured and recorded how long the wearer was asleep each night.

The researchers found that both groups of workers slept longer when they worked in the office with more natural lighting.4The researchers found that the positive effects of sunlight grew as the week passed by—scores on understanding tests improved each day.5

    A.On average,37 minutes longer.

B.They worked for a longer time.

C.The only real difference was the lighting.

D.They worked in different offices with similar lighting.

E.They also tend to perform less well on some understanding tests.

F.By the end of the week, the workers scored 42 percent higher.

G.For the experiment, typical office workers were asked to work in both offices for one week.

  • 27、Why do most of us live our life always caring what people might say or think? Some of the decisions we make are just to please the outside world around us. I have always lived life pleasing the ever over-demanding society. This had a great effect on my search for authenticity (真实性). I only felt good enough when people paid attention to me. So I would frequently do things to catch people’s eye instead of placing emphasis on what really matters to me.

A recent experience changed my view. I had been looking for a tailor to mend some of my clothes. With the help of a few friends, I found one, who just so happened to go to the same gym as me. As we chatted, he shared his story and his use of drugs for muscle development with me. In his words, he weighed over 240 pounds and was the envy of a lot of people. So many people wanted to be like him and have a body like his, which made him use more drugs.

But within two years something happened. He began to have problems with his liver. The doctor advised him to stop using drugs and give up lifting heavy weights for a while. This was a hard decision because he had got so used to the attention from people. He didn’t want to give that up; who would? Right? That was it. He made me understand how he lived his life for people. He lost sight of what was best for him.

He told me not to live life thinking about too much what people think, feel, or say. Instead, live life with meaning. His story really has an effect on me. I have to look at my life to see what I do. I am not saying we shouldn’t take the advice of others into consideration, but we must work hard for continuous self-awareness (自我认识). If we can know what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, we can realize just how important that thing is to us.

    【1】What does the underlined phrase“placing emphasis on”mean?

    A.Looking forward to.

    B.Paying attention to.

    B.To keep healthy.

    C.To treat his liver disease.

D.To improve his muscle and weight.

【3】Why was the tailor unwilling to accept the doctor’s suggestion?

A.He was afraid of losing others’admiration.

B.He didn’t have any trouble with his health.

C.He wanted to live a simple and easy life.

D.He wasn’t able to lose sight of himself.

【4】What lesson does the story tell us?

A.We should live life to the fullest.

B.Being open to others’advice is important.

C.We should have a good understanding of ourselves.

D.Nothing is more important than good health in our life.

  • 28、   Are you smarter than your parents and grandparents? According to James Flynn, a professor at a New Zealand university, you are! Over the course of the last century, people’s IQ test scores have gotten steadily higher --- on average, three points higher each decade. This improvement is known as the “Flynn effect”, and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge. Flynn believes that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment, but the improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity. So what has occurred in the 20th century to help people achieve higher scores?

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general and the learning of test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test. Others have pointed to better nutrition. Babies now are born larger, healthier, and with more brain development than in the past. Another suggested explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information, which improves their problem-solving skills.

Flynn has limited the possible explanations after carefully examining test data and discovering that the improvement in scores has taken place in only certain parts of the IQ test. Test-takers are not doing better on the maths or vocabulary sections of the test; they are doing better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test shows a set of shapes, and test-takers must find the patterns and connections between them.

According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases. Every time you play a computer game, you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps you do well on one kind of intelligence test. So are you really smarter than your parents? In one very specific way, you may be.

1What is the function of the third paragraph?

A.To list the findings of Professor Flynn’s research.

B.To provide possible explanations that disprove Flynn’s ideas.

C.To outline different theories explaining the increase in IQ scores.

D.To describe how research was carried out in the measuring of intelligence.

2According to the passage, newer educational techniques include _________.

    A.exposing children to fewer tests

    B.giving children clearer teaching instructions

C.getting children to memorize lots of information

D.encouraging children to find out things themselves

3The writer believes that computer games _________.

A.have discouraged people from taking exercise

B.have made young people become less intelligent

C.have helped improve people’s visual intelligence

D.have caused young people to have poorer vocabularies

4Which statement would Professor Flynn agree with?

A.People today are taking easier tests.

B.People today have fewer problems to solve.

C.Not all aspects of intelligence have increased.

D.The language ability of people has improved.

  • 29、   In Japan, taking a walk in the woods or “forest bathing” is taken very seriously. 【1】 The secret is that it does far more than just giving you some exercise and a bit of fresh air. There are some other fantastic benefits.

【2】 Not surprisingly, a walk in the woods has proven to be more of an attractive activity to people who are overweight than an hour in a gym. Doctors are now suggesting that walking in the woods is a far healthier way for fat people to exercise than walking indoors.

It can also greatly reduce your blood pressure. In Japan, researchers had one group of subjects take a walk in a wooded area and another group in a built up area. 【3】 They found the subjects that had taken a walk in the woods had significantly lower blood pressure than those who had walked in an urban area.

Just being near trees can reduce depression. 【4】 In one study carried out in London, it was found that people who lived near to trees had much better mental health. Researchers discovered that, the more trees that could be found in any location, the fewer the number of people who were being prescribed antidepressants (抗抑郁药).

Walking in the woods has already been shown to improve brainpower. That is why there is currently a trend to site kindergartens in wooded areas. Researchers have found that, children who play in wooded areas develop better cognitive (认知的) skills and are better equipped to be able to assess risks and dangers. 【5】

A.It helps you recover from illness.

B.It can help overweight people lose weight.

C.That has been proven in studies conducted in big cities.

D.What have the Japanese discovered about walking in a forest?

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”
