二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Just picture your favorite Disney cartoon characters Mickey Mouse Minnie Mouse Donald Duck Goofy Bugs Bunny Pinocchio etc There's an extremely high chance that a whole host of Disney's most popular cartoon characters share a common fashion choicethey all wear a pair of white gloves Although there are many surprising facts about Disney's most famous characters putting gloves on animation(动画片)characters is actually a pretty reasonable move

The creation of handdrawn cartoons is a difficult and tiring process It takes time and precision(精确度)to create the characters you know and love At that time animators wanted to make their job a touch faster with a few techniques One of these techniques was using round edges(边)instead of angles(角). So this also meant simplifying features such as hands to make the animation process quicker

Still in the age of black and white cartoons separating characters' roundedged hands from their black bodies was hard Gloves were an easy way to make their hands stand out In fact Walt Disney might have been the first to put gloves on his characters in The Opry House starring Mickey Mouse When animation moved away from black and white Mickey and all of his friends still kept their signature white gloves

Besides keeping the animation simple Walt Disney told his biographer Bob Thomas that the gloves were also designed to anthropomorphize the mouse "We didn't want him to have mouse hands because he was supposed to be more connected with people" Disney told Thomas in 1957 according to The New York Times "So we gave him gloves Five fingers seemed like too much on such a little figure so we took away one" All this nostalgic Disney talk makes us want to go back and look at these 18 classic photos of Mickey Mouse

1Why did animators prefer round edges rather than angles

    A.Round edges look better

B.Round edges are easier to draw

C.Round edges can be more popular

    D.Round edges seem more reasonable

2What does the underlined word "anthropomorphize" mean

    A.Humanize

    B.Beautify

    C.Modernize

    D.Simplify

3What do we know about Mickey Mouse

A.It first appeared in The Opry House

B.It has only four fingers on each hand

C.Its white gloves have its own signatures

D.Its popularity was due to the black body

4What is the text mainly about

A.Why Disney characters have little in common

B.Why most Disney characters are so popular

C.Why most Disney characters wear gloves

D.Why Disney created its cartoon characters

  • 27、Not all waste has to go to waste. Most of the world’s 2.22 billion tons of annual trash ends up in landfills or open dumps. Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist and engineer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, has created a solution to our massive trash problem: waste microfactories. These little trash processors— some as small as 500 square feet — house a series of machines that recycle waste and transform it into new materials with thermal technology. The new all-in-one approach could leave our current recycling processes in the dust.

Sahajwalla launched the world’s first waste microfactory targeting electronic waste, or e-waste, in 2018 in Sydney. A second one began recycling plastics in 2019. Now, her lab group is working with university and industry partners to commercialize their patented Microfactory technology. “The small scale of the machines will make it easier for them to one day operate on renewable energy, unlike most large manufacturing plants. The approach will also allow cities to recycle waste into new products on location, avoiding the long, often international, high-emission journeys between recycling processors and manufacturing plants. With a microfactory, gone are the days of needing separate facilities to collect and store materials, extract elements and produce new products,” says Sahajwalla.

Traditionally, recycling plants break down materials for reuse in similar products — like melting down plastic to make more plastic things. Sahajwalla’s invention evolves this idea by taking materials from an old product and creating something different. “The kids don’t look like the parents,” she says. For example, the microfactories can break down old smartphones and computer monitors and extract silica (from the glass) and carbon (from the plastic casing), and then combine them into silicon carbide nanowires. This generates a common ceramic material with many industrial uses. Sahajwalla refers to this process as “the fourth R” adding “re-form” to the common phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”.

In 2019, just 17.4 percent of e-waste was recycled, so the ability to re-form offers a crucial new development in the challenge of recycling complex electronic devices. “We can do so much more with materials,” says Sahajwalla. “Traditional recycling has not worked for every recycling challenge.” She and her team are already working to install the next waste microfactory in the Australian town of Cootamundra by early 2021, with the goal of expanding around the country over the next few years.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To present the process of recycling waste.

B.To introduce a new type of trash processor.

C.To prove the seriousness of the trash problem.

    A.The scale of waste microfactories.

    B.The founding of waste microfactories.

    C.The influences of waste microfactories.

    D.The advantages of waste microfactories.

【3】What does “re-form” refer to according to Sahajwalla?

    A.Extracting materials from the waste.

    B.Updating the whole recycling process.

    C.Generating new materials with waste.

    D.Transforming waste into similar products.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

  • 29、Can we humans avoid war? Can war be prevented ?

    1. Throughout the ages, from the Stone Age to the Atomic Age, men have been fighting, first with swords and shields, then with pins and cannous, and now, hydrogen bombs and missiles are used for military purpose. But, in spite of all these. it is still belief that war can prevented and prace can be won, but it requires the effort of every one of us.

If there is peace in the world, men can use their rockets to explore the mystery of space, their submarines to explore the depth of the sea, their missiles to deliver to mails and their fine equipment to penetrate(穿透)jungles of Africa ,instead of using them military.

Governments can use their money to build more schools,so that more children can be educated to be useful citizens.3, They can also design new machines to increase the production of goods and thus improve the way of the people.

4It requires,in my opinion, the understanding and friendship be-tween all people from all nations.Let no one suffer discrimination by reason of color,race,reli-gion,or national origin.Let the rich support the poor and the strong help the weak.

We know that neither peace nor such a dream world can come true in a day or month.5.But let us plan and begin now.

A.How can a peaceful world be achieved ?

B.The process may even take decades or centuries.

C.Peace can be won through the efforts of all human beings.

D.Things for military use can be transformed to peaceful use.

E.Scientists can use atomic energy to power steamships and planes.

F.I am sure that we would not like to experience another world war,

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

That night, after a couple of restless hours, Dora woke up suddenly at midnight. She went to her bathroom. Stepping on the carpet she noticed it was damp. Looking out, she found that muddy water was inching up the wood-paneled walls! She ran to her father’s bedside. “Daddy, Daddy,” she cried, shaking him violently. “Wake up. There’s water in the house!”

Barefoot and wearing only shorts, Dykstra walked to the entrance and opened the door. What he saw shook him wide-awake. Duchess, their dog, was standing just outside the door, her feet in six inches of water. That meant the roadway, their only means of escape, was flooded. He hid his anxiety. They climbed up the ladder-like stairs to a loft (阁楼) above the living room. From there they could hear the water filling the room below, creeping (缓慢地行进) toward them. Suddenly the whole house trembled as if struck by an earthquake. The next instant they found themselves floating, and the wooden house being swept along the river! Terrified that the cabin would sink and take them down with it, Dykstra decided that they would have to get out. Wrapping his arms tightly round his daughter, he plunged (猛冲) into the icy water.

The house was behind them now, chasing them through the darkness. Before he could get out of its path, the house – pushed by the tremendous (巨大的) power of the water – pinned him at the trunk. His ribs (肋骨) were crushed. His left leg was broken. He lost consciousness. Then the house shifted, releasing him. Dora found herself drifting downstream, her unconscious father beside her. “Don’t die, Daddy!” she cried. “Please!”

Perhaps it was the cry of the little girl that stirred Dykstra to consciousness. In the pale moonlight, Dykstra spotted an island formed by some rubbish that had got caught in some treetops. Fighting against the current and his pain, he swam toward it. Dora climbed onto the small pile of timbers (木材) and pulled her father, who was fighting for breath, from the rushing water onto the timbers. Now, Dora realized, it was up to her to help him.
