26、 Summer brings flowers and dirt and barbeque smoke. In the most wintery places, there isn’t much outside on cold days except snow, strong wind and cars warming up. Pine needles, wood smoke and snow---these are the smells of winter, and for people who live with different seasons, wintry weather brings its own set of olfactory(嗅觉的) experiences. But why does the cold of winter smell different from the heat of summer?
One reason is that odor (气味) molecules move much more slowly as the air temperature drops, said Pamela Dalton, an olfactory scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. That means that there are simply fewer smells to smell on a cold, crisp day than there are on a hot and humid one. It’s the same reason why hot soup smells more than cold soup does and why the garbage truck leaves behind the strongest smells on steamy summer days.
What’s more, our noses don’t work quite well when the surrounding air is cold, Dalton said. In experiments that require biopsies(活组织检查) of olfactory receptors that lie deep inside the nose, researchers at Monell have discovered that the receptors “bury themselves a little more deeply in the nose in winter,” she said, “possibly as a protective response against cold, dry air.”
There is a strong psychological factor in our sense of smell, Hirsch added, and what we expect to smell has a big influence on what we actually smell. In The Invalid’s Story by Mark Twain, for example, a man is stuck on a train next to what he thinks is a rotting dead body but is actually a box of cheese that smells extremely unpleasant. So strongly affected by the smell, he spends too long looking for fresh air on the freezing platform and develops a fever that ends up killing him. “What you think of a smell have powerful effects on you whether you like it and whatever you think it to be,” Hirsch said. “So, if you go outside in winter and you are used to smelling snow or nuts in the fire or whatever you happen to smell outside, that’s what you will interpret smells to be.”
To cope with lack of smells in winter, many people try to burn more candles with pleasant smell, cook more sweet stews(炖菜) and bake more cookies, which creates a greater contrast between the indoor and outdoor environments. “You’re probably fond of indoor smells in the winter,” Dalton said. “Homes are closed up, and windows are closed. We concentrate on the smells of cooking and living.”
【1】According to the second paragraph, Pamela Dalton will probably agree that _________.
A.air temperature affects smells’ spreading direction greatly
B.hot soup is more popular with people in winter than cold soup
C.there are not many smells available to be smelled in winter
D.a garbage truck is easier to break down in cold winter

A.one can easily feel terrible smell in a small space
B.one’s mind and thoughts can affect the sense of smell
C.no one can survive when there is lack of fresh air
D.one’s opinion on smell is quite different from others
【3】Which of the following is NOT the measure people take to deal with lack of smells in winter?
A.Closing doors and windows B.Cooking stews
C.Burning candles D.Baking cookies
27、
When you throw something in the trash, soon a garbage truck will come to take it away. Then where does it go? That depends on where you live. Different towns deal with trash in different ways. | |
Recycling A recycling truck picks up paper, cardboard, metal, plastic and glass. These go to the recycling plant to be sorted and made into new things. |
|
Incinerator An incinerator is a huge stove that burns trash to make heat and electricity. The ash that’s left gets buried in a landfill. Trash ash can be poisonous, so it has to be stored carefully. But is takes up a lot less room than just plain trash. |
|
Compost Food waste might go to a composter. In a compost heap (堆肥堆), bacteria and worms break down dead plants and old food. They turn it in into good, rich oil. Some people keep compost heaps in their gardens. Big commercial composters handle waste from restaurants and farms. |
|
Landfills Some trash gets buried in landfills. A landfill starts as a big hole. Trucks dump trash. Big earth movers push it into place and crush it down. They cover the trash with dirt to keep scavengers (食腐动物) away. The bottom of a landfills is lined with a barrier to keep bad things from leaking into the ground. Pipes drain away liquid. When the landfill is full, it’s covered with earth. It might become a park or lawn. |
|
【1】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Recycling helps to generate energy.
B.Bacteria and worms helps handle food waste.
C.The landfill is used to drive scavengers away.
D.Trash ash is carefully handled to save room.
【2】What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To inform us of trash treatment.
B.To appeal for trash classification.
C.To discuss solutions to trash pollution.
D.To raise awareness of the harm of trash.
28、 Light is a complex phenomenon classically explained with a simple model based on rays and wavefronts. Many of the aspects of light have been explored, but few people notice them happening in their real lives. For example, most of us observe some type of optical interference almost daily, but usually don’t realize the events in play behind the ever-changing display of colors produced when light waves interfere with each other. One of the best examples of interference is shown by the light reflected from a film of oil floating on water. Another example is the thin film of a soap bubble, which reflects a series of light with beautiful colors when shined by natural or man-made light sources.
Electromagnetic radiation(电磁辐射), the larger family of wave-like phenomena to which visible light belongs, is the primary vehicle transporting energy through the vast reaches of the universe. The means by which visible light is sent out or absorbed, and how it predictably reacts under different conditions as it travels through space and the atmosphere, form the basis of the existence of color in our universe. The human eye is sensitive to a form of electromagnetic radiation that lies in the wavelength range between 400 and 700 nanometers(纳米), commonly known as the visible light spectrum, which is the only source of color. When combined, all of the wavelengths present in visible light form colorless white light. Red, green, and blue colors are classically considered the primary colors because they are fundamental to human vision. Light is observed as white by humans when our eyes are affected by equal amounts of red, green, and blue light at the same time.
The concept of color temperature is of great importance in photography and digital imaging, regardless of whether the image capture device is a camera or a microscope. A lack of proper color temperature balance between the microscope light source and the image sensor is the most common reason for unexpected color shifts in photomicrography(显微照相术) and digital imaging. If the color temperature of the light source is too low for the film, photomicrographs will have an overall yellowish or reddish cast and will appear warm. On the other hand, when the color temperature of the light source is too high for the film, photomicrographs will have a blue cast and will appear cool. As problematic as these color shifts may seem, they’re always easily corrected by the proper use of conversion and light balancing filters (滤光器).
【1】Which of the following is right according to the 1st paragraph of the passage?
A. Light is classically defined in terms of rays and wavefronts.
B. Most of us aren’t explicit about how colors are produced.
C. People can understand optical interference by watching films.
D. Shined by natural or man-made light sources, films reflect a series of light.
【2】What can we learn about electromagnetic radiation?
A. Color originates from it.
B. It moves in a straight line.
C. Green lights are not part of it.
D. Its wavelength can’t be 500 nanometers.
【3】The color shifts on photomicrographs________.
A. are difficult to get right once formed
B. are caused by the high colors more often
C. are caused by the high color temperature of the light source
D. prove that how important the color temperature is in imaging

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?
Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 【1】 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.
In fact, planes 【2】 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.
When a 【3】 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 【4】, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 【5】 process.
Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.
Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.
That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.
And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 【9】, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.
But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.
Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.
Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.
In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

39、阅读下列短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Cloning has always been with us and is here to stay. It is a way of making an exact copy of another animal or plant. It happens in plants when gardeners take cuttings from growing plants to make new ones. It also happens in animals when twins identical in sex (性别) and appearance are produced from the same original eggs. The fact is that these are both examples of natural clones.
Cloning has two major uses. Firstly, gardeners use it all the time to produce commercial quantities of plants. Secondly, it is valuable for research on new plant species and for medical research on animals. Cloning plants is simple while cloning animals is very complicated. It is a difficult task to undertake. Many attempts to clone mammals failed. But at last the determination and patience of scientists paid off in 1996 with a breakthrough—the cloning of Dolly the sheep.
On the one hand, the whole scientific world followed the process of the first successful clone, Dolly the sheep. The fact that she seemed to develop normally was very encouraging. Then came the disturbing news that Dolly had become seriously ill. Cloning scientists were depressed to find that Dolly’s illnesses were more appropriate to a much older animals. Altogether Dolly lived six and a half years, half the length of the original sheep.
On the other hand, Dolly’s appearance raised a storm of objection and had a great influence on the media and public imagination. It became controversial. It suddenly opened everybody’s eyes to the possibility of using cloning to cure serious illnesses and even to produce human being.
Governments became nervous and more conservative (保守的). Some began to reform their legal systems and forbade research into human cloning, but other countries like China and UK, continued to accumulate evidence of the abundant medical aid that cloning could provide. However, scientists still wonder whether cloning will help or harm us and where it is leading us.

41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There were two men who occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to drain (排除)the liquids from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours every day. They spoke about their wives and families and their jobs. And every afternoon when the man by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened by all the activity and color of the outside world.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake, the man had said Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in detail, the man on the other side of the room closed his eyes and imagined the beautiful scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window described it. Unexpectedly, a strange thought entered his head: Why could he look out of the window? Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It didn’t seem fair.
As the thought developed, the man felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy turned into hate and soon turned him sour. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window and that thought now controlled his life.
