27、 Up till about 130 years ago, newspapers in the United States attracted only the most serious readers. They used no illustration (插图) and the articles were about politics or business.
Two men changed that - Joseph Pulitzer bought the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. Pulitzer bought the New York World in 1883. He changed it from a traditional newspaper into a very exciting one overnight. He added lots of illustrations and he told his reporters to write articles on every crime they could find. And they did. One of them-a woman reporter, even pretended she was mad and was sent to a hospital. She then wrote many articles about the poor treatment of patients in those hospitals where mad men were kept.
In 1895, Hearst came to New York from California. He wanted the Journal to be more exciting than the world. He also wanted it to be cheaper, so he lowered the price to a penny. Hearst attracted attention because his newspaper headings were bigger than anyone else’s. He often says, “Big print makes big news.”
Pulitzer and Hearst did anything they could to sell newspapers. For example, Hearst sent Frederic Remington, the famous illustrator, to draw pictures of the Spanish-American War. When he got there, he told Hearst that no fighting was going on, Hearst answered, “You provide the pictures. I’ll provide the war.”

28、Temples have existed for thousands of years. They are the proof of cultures and civilization that existed many years ago. With their excellent architecture and structure they fascinate visitors from around the world.
Temple of Heaven
The Temple of Heaven is a Taoist temple in Beijing, the capital of China. The temple was constructed in the 14th century by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty as his personal temple, where he would pray for good harvest and to make up for the sins of his people. The temple's architecture is quite interesting: Everything in the temple, which represents heaven, is circular whereas the ground levels, which represent the earth, are square. It symbolizes the relationship between the earth and heaven, the human world and God's world, which stands at the heart of Chinese cosmogony.
Wat Rong Khun “White Temple”
Immediately upon entering the grounds of Chiang Rai's 'White Temple' in Thailand, you’ll realize this contemporary, unconventional temple stands out, even in a country crowded with places of worship. The White Temple is incredibly different and unique in its architecture, art and design. In fact, it's designed in a very modern way, but still sticking to and respecting the conventional Buddhist principles. This temple is all white with many artistic decorations and statues full of mirrors that create nice silvery/glittering reflections.
Kinkaku-ji
Kyoto is filled with beautiful shrines and temples, but none can be compared to the beauty of Kinkaku-ji. This Buddhist temple has acquired a lot of fame recently and has become one of the most visited places in Japan. Whether you visit during the fall when there are red momiji leaves contrasting the gold, in winter when the gold is topped with pure white snow, in spring with the cherry blossoms, or in summer allowing you to see the beautiful temple's golden reflection—there is never a bad time to visit this beautiful temple.
Golden Temple
The Golden Temple in Punjab, India is the most sacred shrine of Sikhism. For the Sikhs, the Golden Temple symbolizes endless freedom and spiritual independence. The site of the temple began with a small lake that was so peaceful that even Buddha came there to meditate (冥想). Thousands of years later, Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism also lived and meditated by the lake. The temple itself is decorated with marble sculptures, gilded in gold and covered in precious stones.

29、 In March 2013, on a rainy night, my partner Reece remembered that he had forgotten a box in his car and went out to get it. On his way back inside he noticed a small shadow moving on the driveway. As Reece moved towards the shadow, he realised it was a young hedgehog(刺猬), all wet in the grass, eating mud. He quickly removed his jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was very weak and unable to move about quickly. He didn’t seem to be frightened, nor did he resist being lifted.
Once inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart melt-he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, and this little creature was amazingly intelligent. Not only did he learn to cat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, and use a paper-covered mat for his “business”, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor house and also jump into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us. Alf knows us very well and recognises both our voices Unfortunately.in April 2014. I was caught in a car accident and had to spend two months in Auckland City Hospital. And I really missed Alf. Reece told me that Alf had been searching around the house for me, checking in places where I’d normally be, such as my desk, my favourite seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.
One evening, Reece set up a video call for me from my hospital bed and I was extremely happy when I saw the little guy appear on my phone. When I told Alf that I would be home soon, he started moving his head and holding out his arms as if trying to reach me through the screen.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 【7】 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.
I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 【8】 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.
We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.
