26、 Inventor, physicist, surveyor, astronomer, biologist, artist... Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the seventeenth century. Once he worked with renowned men of science like Christian Huygens, Antony van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton and the great architect, Christopher Wren.
Hooke’s early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School at the age of thirteen, and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skill at designing experiments and devising instruments. In 1662, at the age of twenty-eight, he was named Curator of Experiments of the newly formed Royal Society of London. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that it had no money to pay him!
Watching living things through the microscope was one of his favorite occupations.
He devised a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. They were cells—the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who coined the term “cell” as the box like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of a monastery (修道院).Perhaps because of his varied interests, Hooke often left experiments unfinished. Others took up where he left off and then claimed sole (独占的) credit. This sometimes led to quarrels with colleagues. One work that he finished was his book MICRO GRAPHIA, a volume that reveals the immense potential of the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity and light which may have helped scientists like Newton while they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.
Hooke made valuable contributions to astronomy too. A crater (陨石坑) on the moon is named after him in appreciation of his services to this branch of science.

27、 I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don't remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside. I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading. Hearing mom say," I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning," made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself. I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew. So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her, I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read. We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realized that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said," The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf," I knew where the candy was. My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything. I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly, so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading. I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests. Occasionally, I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading. I liked facts, things that are concrete. I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet, now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex, I find myself needing a way to escape. By opening a novel, I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone. I don't have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this. I just read to relax.
We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding. Reading is a vital part of my life. Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
【1】According to Paragraph 3, the author's reading of road signs indicates___________

28、 A recent study conducted by researchers from Canada's Wilfrid Laurier University found that the snakes actively seek out socialization with their peers (同伴),but also they are extremely particular about who they spend time with. However, snakes used to be thought of as solitary animals. They are seldom seen hanging out in groups.
A team of researchers led by Morgan Skinner and Dr. Noam Miller selected 40 non-poisonous garter snakes (袜带蛇). Ten were purchased from a snake keeper and the rest were caught in the wild. After marking each snake with a spot of color to allow for easy identification, the researchers placed ten snakes inside each of the four plastic shelters.
Skinner photographed each snake group twice a day before removing them from their shelters. After cleaning the areas thoroughly to rid them of any familiar smells, the reptiles were rearranged into different groups, and returned to the enclosure. A camera fixed over the shelters allowed the scientists to track the animals' movements for a total of eight days.
When Skinner and Miller analyzed the images, they found that regardless of where they were placed, the snakes always slipped back to their origin al "friends" forming groups of three or eight inside the small shelters. “They can tell others apart,” Miller said.
Gordon Burghardt, a biologist, says, "The study should help convince people that snakes have more social intelligence than most of us realize."
Miller believes the research could help with snake protection efforts. Endangered snake species relocated to safer habitats often leave these areas. Now, conservationists may be able to avoid that by transferring entire snake groups to the new location. Alternatively, they could also spray (喷洒)the new habitat with the species' smells to make transplants feel at “home."
【1】What does the underlined word "solitary" mean in paragraph 1?
A.Causing fear. B.Existing only in small numbers.

29、 Those who live in the Western world often feel as though their civilization is, and always was, the most technologically advanced in the world. However, that is not necessarily true. Many important inventions that we once used, or still use today, have come from the “East”, as the Europeans once called China. Here are some examples.
Printing
Do you know a German named Johannes Gutenberg? His printing machine helped shape the modern Europe, and the world. But the Chinese did it first, and they did it much earlier.
During the Tang Dynasty (AD 618—907), Chinese engineers began using wood blocks to print designs onto silk. They would soon begin producing short Buddhist texts so people could carry in their pockets. By AD 868, the first dated, printed book was published. It was a translated Indian Buddhist text called the Diamond Sutra.
By the way, Gutenberg was born around 1,400, nearly 540 years after the publishing of the Diamond Sutra.
Banknotes
Not long after coming up with an efficient printing press, the Chinese invented banknotes, pieces of colored paper that are given value by the very people who use them. Today, nearly all modern currency comes in the form of banknotes. Banknotes began to appear in China in the 700s and helped to replace those copper (铜), silver and gold coins with things like our “green Benjamins”.
Gunpowder
Here is an important weapon that Europeans love! By AD 300, Chinese scientists were putting in paper certain chemicals which, when mixed together and ignited (点火), would produce fireworks. By AD 800, the Chinese improved this powder to fire balls of iron at city walls and tightly gathered enemies. This is in contrast to the West, which only began describing gunpowder around AD 1,200.
Compass
While this is certainly not an invention we use every day, like the banknote, the compasses were also first invented in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 220). The spoon-shaped things always point north. During the Tang Dynasty, they were refined (改进) into more familiar needles.
【1】When was the Diamond Sutra printed?
A.Around AD 540. B.Around AD 700.
C.Around AD 868. D.Around AD 1,400.
【2】What are the “green Benjamins” made of?
A.Copper. B.Silver. C.Gold. D.Paper.
【3】What do the last two inventions have in common?
A.Both were used to kill the enemies. B.Both were invented in the Han Dynasty.
C.Both were improved in the Tang Dynasty. D.Both were widely used in the daily life.

31、 “You are being put thousands of dollars into debt to learn things you will never even use. Wasting 4 years of your life to be stuck at a paycheck that grows slower than the rate of inflation (通货膨胀). Paying $200 for a $6 textbook.” Wilson said in his social network.
His story has produced a ________ debate in the comments online. Other young adults are wondering if ________ higher education is worth the time and money.
Wilson, who was on an Architectural Engineering undergraduate course told BBC Trending that the “cost of inflation is relatively small compared to the cost of college over the last 30 or so years. I mean, it really is ridiculous how the cost of college has ________.”
He’s supported by data. According to the US Department of Education the average annual increase in college tuition in the United States, between 1980-2014, grew by nearly 260% compared to the nearly 120% ________ in all consumer items.
In 1980, the average cost of tuition, room and board, and fees for a four-year course was over $9,000. That cost now is more than $23,000 for state colleges. If you want to go ________ it’s more than $30,000.
A similar increase in tuition fees has also been seen in England. In 2012, the government supported initiatives from some universities to ________ more than the 9,000 tuition fee limit.
Wilson also regarded higher education ________ as a reason to leave university and enter the workplace. Students in the United States are estimated to be in around over $1.2 trillion of loan debt with 7 million borrowers.
Wilson says that when he first told his parents that he was leaving university, they were “very ________” but are now supportive of his decision. His parents finally came round to his decision to ________ his studies. Others, like Blair Brown, who agreed with Wilson also pointed out that some professions do require a university degree.
“Being an engineer, scientist, or computer technician could be learned rather quickly through apprenticeships, independent study, and hands-on experience. Human nature is to learn by doing, not ________ to do. As for more professional careers such as medical doctors and lawyers, university study is ________ necessary,” Brown commented.
Wilson, who told Trending that he is currently ________ for a trade show sales team and his employers did Google him and they saw the funny side. He adds that he hopes enough work experience will ________ him to be employed by an architectural engineering team in the future.
He doesn’t think university will play any ________ in that future. “They would have to make a ________ change to the system before I would consider that and I don’t think they’ll do that while I’m still young enough to want to go.”

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?
Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 【1】 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.
In fact, planes 【2】 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.
When a 【3】 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 【4】, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 【5】 process.
Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.
Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.
That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.
And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 【9】, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.
But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.
Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.
Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.
In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.
