二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Chinese audiences seemed not to have been satisfied with the third season of the highly anticipated food documentary A Bite of China.

Even though the series has maintained high viewership ratings since its comeback last week, much higher than other programs aired at the same time, the ranking on Douban, a social networking website featuring films, literature and events, slipped to 4.2 out of 10, as of Tuesday, compared with 9.3 and 8.4, respectively, for the first two seasons.

Picky viewers complain that some of the narration is not accurate, while others pinpoint misleading content. At the same time, food blogger @barbara questioned whether it is appropriate to give a close-up shot of the poisonous plant Nandina(南天竺)in a food program.

A Bite of China, which debuted in 2012, became hugely popular nationwide for its quality introduction of some rarely-known and mouth-watering domestic cuisine. In the new show, however, watchers are not satisfied with “irrelevant” food references, such as lipsticks made of Chinese traditional medicine and martial arts master.

The first episode introduced a hand-made iron frying pan from east China’s Shandong province, which prompted thousands of Chinese Internet users to buy one from China’s leading e-commerce website Tmall in the next few days. Sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan” surged 6,000 times compared with a year ago, according to Beijing Youth Daily.

In response to overwhelming criticism and questions, A Bite of China production crew responded on Weibo that they seek innovation despite the risks following the first two phenomenal seasons.

“It is unavoidable to make comparisons with the first two, and some audiences may not accept the changes,” the crew said. “We explore the culture and civilization behind food, and give food a historic touch. That’s why we feature culinary(烹饪的)tools, feast and rituals, as well as a healthy diet to show Chinese wisdom and philosophy, which has not been shown in any food programs before.”

【1】Why does the passage mention Nandina?

A.Because some of the narration is not accurate.

B.Because it may be improper to give a close-up shot of a poisonous plant.

    C.Because it is misleading content.

D.Because it is not attractive at all to most picky viewers.

【2】Which of the following elements leads to viewers’ dissatisfaction with the new show?

    A.some mouth-watering domestic cuisines

    B.food-unrelated items

    C.some rarely-known cuisines

D.the increasing sales of the pan at “Zhensanhuan”

【3】According to its production crew, what is unique to ‘A Bite of China III’?

A.It makes comparisons with the first two episodes.

B.It tells the story of some martial arts related to food.

C.It receives overwhelming criticism and questions from audience.

D.It focuses on cooking tools, rituals and healthy eating.

【4】What is the best the title for the passage?

A.'A Bite of China III' Draws Criticism from Audiences

B.'A Bite of China III' Maintains High Viewership Ratings

C.'A Bite of China III' Changes for the Worse

D.'A Bite of China III' Explains its Purposes

  • 27、   One spring morning, I was hiking on southeastern Alaska’s Island when I froze. 20 paces away was a huge Alaskan Wolf — caught in a trap. It was a mother wolf. Somewhere there were hungry pups (幼崽) waiting for her.

From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. That meant her pups were probably still alive. So I decided to search for her pups. Fortunately, I spotted her pups. I began imitating the high-pitched call of a mother wolf calling her young. A few moments later, four tiny pups appeared. One by one, I placed them in a bag and headed back down the slope.

When the mother wolf spotted me, she let out a high-pitched. I released the pups, and they raced to her. I could see that the trap’s steel jaws had imprisoned only two toes. They were swollen, but she wouldn’t lose the paw — if I could free her.

“OK,” I said. “Just a minute and you will be free.” I applied pressure, the trap opened, and the wolf pulled free. Reaching the far side, I looked back. The mother and her pups were sitting where I had left them, watching me. I waved. At the same time, the mother wolf sent a long howl into the air.

Four years later, I returned after serving in the Army. Standing on the edge of a hill, I gave out a wolf call. An echo came and a wolf call followed. Then I saw a dark shape moving in my direction. “Hello, old girl,” I called gently. The wolf moved closer, her tail wagging slightly. Moments later, the wolf left. But the memory she left with me will always be there, a reminder that there are things in nature that exist outside the laws and understanding of man.

1How did the author feel when he first came across the wolf?

    A.Frightened. B.Satisfied.

    C.Excited. D.Disappointed.

2What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A.The author rescued the mother wolf.

B.The author managed to find the pups.

C.The author took the pups from their mother.

D.How did the author freed the mother wolf.

3What can we learn from the text?

A.The author was once a soldier.

B.It was winter when the story happened.

C.The author never saw the wolf again after saving her.

D.The wolf couldn’t recognize the author four years later.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.A Hike Trapped a Wolf.

    B.We Should Protect the Wolf.

C.The Story Between a Man And a Wolf.

D.How Can One Help Endangered Animals.

  • 28、Walking routes that are quicker and cheaper than the Tube in London

Love to shop? You can walk between Knightsbridge and fashionable Sloane Square in around 10 minutesmuch simpler than swapping lines at South Kensington.

Don't fall into the trap of taking the Piccadilly line between Covent Garden and Leicester Square. It takes just four minutes to walk and you'll avoid the queues for the lifts at Covent Garden.

*Use a Santander Cycle for just £2

It costs £2 to access Santander Cycles for 24 hours. The first half hour is free each time you hop on a new bike, which means you can make multiple trips in one day and still pay only £2.

    *Hop on a bus

Buses don't just offer a scenic way of getting around London—they're easy on the wallet too! A single fare costs just £1.50, while unlimited bus travel on a contactless card costs £4.50.

Make the most of the hopper fare, which allows you to make a second bus journey for free within an hour of travel.

*Go contactless for the cheapest fare

If you have to take the Tube, use the same contactless card all day long to make the most savings when making multiple journeys. Contactless card users benefit from a daily cap (上限).

1What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?

A.To introduce different ways of transport in London.

B.To offer people tips for cheap travel options in London.

C.To warn people against traps of wasting money in London.

D.To compare different ways of transport in London.

2We can learn from the passage that   .

A.one takes the Tube from Knightsbridge to Sloane Square without changing lines

B.it takes one only £2 to make multiple trips with a Santander Cycle for 24 hours

C.one will enjoy a free journey as long as he/she transfers within an hour of travel

D.unlimited Tube travel with a daily cap is accessible when the same card is used

  • 29、   When talking about the two sexes, people often say that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Undeniably, men and women have great differences in many ways.

However, these contrasts in character could all be down to supposed differences between the male and female brain.

For example, a study led by British psychologist Stuart Ritchie in 2012 found that men’s brains are on average 10 percent bigger than women’s.

And another study led by Israeli psychologist Daphna Joel at Tel Aviv University in 2015 further claimed that differences exist in male and female brains, although each individual’s brain has a “mix of features”, as New Scientist wrote.

But Lise Eliot, a professor of neuroscience (神经学) at the Chicago Medical School, begs to differ. She recently said that the brain “is a unisex organ ”.

Through analyzing brain data of several different men and women, Eliot found that the statistics about brain differences mean nothing. According to her findings, male and female brains are not much more different from each other than male or female hearts or kidneys. And more importantly, these differences don’t show that male and female brains work differently.

So, if it’s not in the brain, what makes males and females behave differently? The answer may lie in socialization, according to The Atlantic.

In the past, many gender studies ignored the effects of a person’s social background and upbringing, instead relying on other data. Take former Harvard University president Lawrence Summers for example. He used a 1970 study that showed men outperformed women 13-to-one on the math part of the SAT to argue that males are more suited to science subjects.

However, another study found that if females were given better opportunities to study science subjects, the ratio would drop to three-to-one.

Eliot’s study “contributed in an important way to the conversation,” neuropharmacologist Margaret McCarthy at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, US, told Science magazine.

Yet, at the same time, McCarthy believes that classing males and females as essentially the same is going “too far”.

1Why were Ritchie and Joel’s studies mentioned in the article?

A.To explain the causes of behavioral differences in men and women.

B.To show how men and women differ in character.

C.To explain the differences between male and female brains.

D.To explore the features of male and female brains.

    2What did Eliot’s study find?

A.Male and female brains are exactly the same.

B.Male and female brains do not differ in function.

C.Brain data is not useful for conducting gender studies.

D.Male and female brains have fewer differences than other organs.

3What causes the differences in behavior between men and women, according to The Atlantic?

    A.Brain size. B.Intelligence.

    C.Social environment. D.Learning ability.

4Which statement would McCarthy probably agree with?

A.It’s important to give equal opportunities to men and women.

B.It’s unnecessary to study the differences between men’s and women’s brains.

C.Eliot’s study offers a good explanation for gender differences.

D.Male brains are better at solving science problems.

  • 31、   Saddleworth Moor in the north of England is a bare place. It seemed almost wired to me, then, that anyone should _____ the building of seven wind turbines( 风力发电机) to produce clean, renewable energy. Surely this was the perfect place to situate them--- basically dull, unattractive to tourists and ----- _____ ---windy. Yet Saddleworth is becoming another battleground in an increasingly confusing _____ over wind farming and the future of the planet.

Typical of this confusion is hearing Professor David Bellamy _____ the fight against wind farms. I had always thought of Professor Bellamy as an environmentalist had made the _____ assumption that he would be a natural supporter of wind power. However, on reflection, Bellamy would be better described as a conservationist, whose main aim is to preserve natural habitats of plants and animals from destruction, rather than a(n) _____ on climate change. He has fought against other renewable energies that _____ wildlife and wildness, and has described the wind turbines as weapons of mass destruction killing birds and bats.

Bellamy, along with other opponents, has argued the wind farms are in fact _____, and are only commercially successfully because they are so heavily funded. This argument has been put forward by several newspaper commentators recently , who have then gone to _____ nuclear power. This doesn’t take into account years of _____ from Greens who claim that nuclear power is both expensive and dangerous. And yet nuclear energy has recently been _____ by a leading green scientist , Professor James Lovelock, who was one of the first to draw attention to the problem of climate change. He argues that renewable energy such as wind simply cannot provide sufficient electricity for our energy needs.

And so it goes on. There are so many _____ claims, each apparently fronted by some outstanding scientists and backed up by a lot of statics. So who’s actually right? What’s the right solution? What _____ me is that we will take so long in deciding that it will be too late. The damage will have been done. Yet what I also _____ is how convenient these conflicting arguments are. We can avoid making any changes to our personal lifestyles by just doing nothing. Global warming isn’t down to me going to Barcelona by air for the weekend or having a dishwasher or driving everywhere; no, it’s because those people in Saddleworth won’t let us build our _____!

Lee 1 after about three and a half hours, with 28 minutes and 28 seconds remaining on his clock. The series is the first time a professional 9-dan Go player has taken on a computer, and Lee is 2 for a $1 million prize.

“I was very surprised,”said Lee after the match.“I didn’t expect to lose. But I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis expressed“huge 3 for Lee Se-dol and his amazing skills.”calling the game“hugely exciting”and“very tense.”Team lead David Silver said it was an“amazing game of Go that really pushed AlphaGo to its 4.”

Go is an ancient Chinese board game that has long been considered one of the great 5faced by AI. While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next. • 40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“Good news,” Mom said, with a bright smile on her face. "The Parker family wants Surfer. They'll be here in an hour to take him home. ” Surfer had been with us for two days. While I was sad at the thought of seeing him go, I knew I couldn't keep him.

My family operate a foster home(收养所)for pets. Surfer had been in an animal shelter, and he was sent to us so we could place him with a loving family. Surfer was a cute puppy, so finding a home for him had been very easy. Dad entered Surfer's information into a pet adoption website, along with some photos, and within a few hours, the Parkers applied to adopt him. Mom looked over their application, and they seemed like responsible people, so she called them.

However, not every dog was so lucky. Zooey was nine years old, and she'd been with us for a few months. It seemed like nobody wanted to adopt an older dog. Dad said that was a shame because older dogs made wonderful companions. Zooey's previous owner had treated her terribly, and when she was sent to us she was injured. I remember how angry Dad seemed at the time. "No dog should be treated like that,“ he said.

When Zooey came to us, she was upset around everyone. She barked at our two dogs as if in defense and backed away when I tried to approach her. But with our considerate care, it wasn't long before Zooey trusted us. I took her on walks around the neighborhood and got her used to other people and dogs. She took a real liking to Surfer. In fact, they often curled together as they napped(打盹).

The Parkers soon arrived, and we all went into the backyard so they could meet with Surfer. Zooey followed us out, her tail wagging lazily, as Surfer rolled in the grass with the two Parker children.
