二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   US President Donald Trump on Friday called on the US to accelerate 5G deployment(部署).“The race to 5G is a race America must win,“Trump stressed,“We want to be the leader in this.”Trump said that 5G networks must be“guarded from the enemy—and we do have enemies out there.”It should be “private sector driven and private sector led,”but his administration is"removing regularity barriers to the buildout of networks.”Trump also vowed to extend broadband access to rural area, and“no matter where you are you will have access very quickly to 5G,”

Trump's words remind us of the US competition with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.The US’ overt crackdown(镇压) on Huawei is closely related to the country's 5G strategic deployment. While suppressing China's telecom giant, the US is mobilizing its own 5G development.Washington is quite narrow—minded.

Chinese companies including Huawei and ZTE have developed their 5G technology in line with the market rules. They may have never prepared for state competitions, nor harbored ambitions to challenge the global geopolitical landscape. Those low—key Chinese enterprises aim at doing better and making more money. They pursue technological leadership merely to survive and develop. It is exaggerating to regard 5G development as a decisive factor in national competitions.

Washington is launching a national mobilization to develop 5G technology. The approach is like taking a“great leap forward,"which is not cool—headed.

US technical mobilization ability is undoubtedly strong. However, the core competitiveness of the internet lies not only in technology but also in application conditions. As more and more people flood into cities, China has a dense urban population with a high average usage rate of base stations, making China's network infrastructure full of market driving force.

The US should give up the fantasy to be an "all—round champion"in the 5G era. Although it will still lead in the overall technological level in the long run, the country should accept the fact that it will be surpassed by China in certain specific fields of 5G. To be a normal powerful country, the US must first have a broad mind.

1Which words can best describe Trump's character?

    A. narrow—minded and aggressive B. cool—headed and peace—loving

    C. considerate and full of ambition D. determined and imaginative

2What's the main reason for the US' overt crackdown on Huawei?

    A. Huawei has developed its 5G technology against the market rules.

    B. The US wants to be the leader in 5G.

    C. Huawei has earned more dollars than Apple.

    D. Huawei doesn't keep a low key profile in dealing with American businessmen.

3What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The US is an abnormal powerful country in every aspect in the world.

    B. Android app is more powerful and useful than IOS app with 5G.

    C. With more and more subscribers in the city, China has an advantage in developing 5G.

    D. The US will lead in the overall technological level in the long term.

4What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Where there is a smartphone, there is a Huawei

    B. A New Era:5G Technology

    C. A Long Way to Go for Huawei

    D. US to Launch ‘Great Leap Forward’ Campaign in 5G

  • 27、   It’s not often sunny in Paris, but people still love to walk along the bank of the Seine. They love the view of the city’s old buildings, especially Notre Dame Cathedral, with its iconic spire(标志性塔尖).

Unfortunately, that view has been forever changed. On April 16 a fire destroyed the spire of the 850-ycar-old wooden Notre Dame Cathedral built in 1163, and two-thirds of the roof.

The fire shocked and saddened Parisians. Citizens gathered around the giant church, singing hymns(赞美诗) and praying for the hundreds of firefighters who fought the flames.

“The importance of Notre Dame, not only to Catholics (天主教) but to all Parisians, cannot be underestimated,” wrote French author Bernard-Henri Levy. “For many in France, it’s more than a house of worship. It’s a symbol of French culture, architecture and history.”

The church is also home to many religious artworks, paintings and sculptures. Luckily, its world-famous colored glass windows survived the fire. These windows are made of many small pieces of glass and feature various Christian images.

Despite its long history and many treasures, the cathedral needed the help of a writer to become truly famous. Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, presented the building to a wide audience of readers. The book’s ugly lead character, Quasimodo, serves as a symbol for Paris’ forgotten Gothic(哥特式的) architecture. Hugo wrote the book to remind people of it, with the hope that they would work to protect the beautiful old buildings of Paris.

French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to reconstruct the historic building. “Notre Dame is our history, our literature and it’s our imagery,” he said in a public speech following the fire.

1Which of the following is True about Notre Dame Cathedral?

A.It is a representative architecture of France.

B.It is made of wood and metal.

C.It is a place for entertainment.

D.It will be rebuilt in a different style.

2What does the underlined word “underestimated” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Undertaken. B.Undercharged.

    C.Undervalued. D.Understood.

3What makes the Cathedral known to the world?

A.Its famous spire. B.Its colored glass windows.

    C.Victor Hugo’s novel. D.Religious treasures inside.

4What’s the writer’s attitude towards the damage to the church?

    A.Uncaring. B.Regretful.

    C.Negative. D.Optimistic.

  • 28、In America, each of the states likes to promote themselves with a slogan(口号). I currently live in Utah, where the slogan is “Life Elevated.” It’s a nod to outdoor entertainment in the high country, including the ski industry. I previously lived in Colorado, a land with red dirt, great mountains and golden plains. The slogan there is “Colorful Colorado.” Years ago I lived in the “Peach State” of Georgia, and I grew up in New Mexico as a little boy, whose slogan is “ Land of Enchantment(魔力).”

We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico, so I appreciate the story of a newcomer to the Land of Enchantment who learned about dusty breezes. She was visiting an antique shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it.The newcomer said, “Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, doesn’t it?”

“That’s not dust, honey,” the shop owner replied.“That’s ENCHANTMENT.”

Here was a person who took a negative and turned it into something humorous. That made the problem more acceptable, or at least live with.A Hong Kong shopping center manager was informed that an escalator(电动扶梯)broke. He posted a sign to warn customers. He chose not to use the traditional “Out of Order’’ or “Do Not Use” warnings.Instead, his sign read, “This Escalator Is Temporarily a Stairway.” He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus.

And in fact there are some things, like the weather, we can’t change. All we can change is our ways that we think and feel about them. I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation. Finding something amusing or enjoyable of a difficulty, an irritation or a troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things we can do. Sometimes the only sense you can make of a situation is a sense of humor.

    A.Accepting them bravely.

    B.Holding positive attitude.

    D.Using great intelligence.

【4】What’s the purpose of the writer’s writing the passage?

A.To encourage people to find the funny side in their daily life.

  • 29、Candy comes in many flavors. Some taste like fruit. Some taste like flowers. Some are chewy, like taffy (太妃糖) and gum. Hard candies are, well. hard! So, they last a long time.

But, in spoken English, there are some types of candy that you cannot eat. For example, you can’t eat eye candy. Eye candy is a person-man or woman-who is very good-looking. So, looking at this person is a treat for the eye, just like candy is a treat for the taste buds.

Do you hear of candy coat? Of course it is not a coat made of candy. But you can say I don’t candy coat the truth. What does candy-coating something mean? Well, some pills are covered with a coat of thin, sweet candy. The coating makes swallowing the pill easier, and it may hide a bad taste. So, candy coating a difficult truth or situation means you don’t directly discuss its bad parts.

After talking about candy you may want to eat some candies. However, some people dislike things that are very sweet, especially adults. But even if you do not like candy, you can still be called a kid in a candy store. This expression means a person is very happy to do something or to simply be somewhere. Imagine a child going from one candy display to the next, not knowing which candy to choose!

Talking about children brings us to another expression: as easy as taking candy from a baby. Think about a small, helpless baby holding a piece of candy. Taking it would be very easy—mean, but easy. So, use this expression when you are talking about something that may be simple to do, but probably not right.

【1】What kind of girl can be described as “eye candy”?

    A.Beautiful

    B.Optimistic

    C.Hardworking

    D.Warmhearted

【2】What does the underlined word “swallowing” mean in English?

    A.Making.

    B.Taking.

    C.Selling.

    D.Testing.

【3】Which of the following expressions means you are doing something with wrong intention?

    A.Hard candies.

    B.Candy coat.

C.A kid in a candy store.

D.As easy as taking candy from a baby.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

A.Candy. Enjoy It or Avoid It

    B.Various Candies in English

C.The Best Candy in the World

    D.Candies’ Different Flavors

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy”, she said softly, “Why won't you come back?”

Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it “Daddy will be home soon,” she'd tell her mother. “He's at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father “I miss you, Daddy,” she'd say. “When will you come back?” Desiree's situation made her mother worried.

Days later, it was Ken's birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother “How about if we tie a litter to a balloon.” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree's eyes immediately lit up.

Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desire and her father had often watched it.

The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. “Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (快速说). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”

Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently.

Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.
